Apple reminds iCloud users of incoming storage downgrade

If you were an existing MobileMe user when the service made the transition to Apple’s iCloud, your days of free bonus storage are nearly over. Apple began sending out email reminders to former MobileMe members today, reminding them that on September 30, their accounts will downgrade to just 5GB of storage. Those who were MobileMe customers when the switch occurred were given 20GB of storage for free, but that all comes to an end very soon.

Originally, MobileMe users were scheduled to lose their 20GB of extra iCloud storage on July 30, but Apple pushed that date back to September 30 not too long ago. If you have less than 5GB of stuff stored in your iCloud account, you don’t have to do anything – the roll over to the new 5GB limit will likely happen without you ever knowing. If you’re using more than 5GB of storage space, however, nothing will be deleted, but backups to iCloud will stop and you won’t be able to add more stuff to your iCloud account until you either do some housekeeping to get down below the 5GB limit or purchase more storage space.

If you elect to take the latter route, you’ll find that Apple’s rates for additional space are actually pretty reasonable (for the most part). The company charges $20 a year for an additional 10GB of storage, $40 for 20GB, and $100 for 50GB. That $100 price tag may be hard for some users to swallow, but paying $40 a year for an extra 20GB doesn’t seem bad at all.

Apple claims that most users don’t use the full 5GB of space that is provided for free, so if that’s true, many of you probably won’t have to do anything with this incoming downgrade. It’s also important to remember that any purchased space is added on top of the free 5GB, so if you plop down that $40 for an extra 20GB, your total storage space will come in at 25GB. Will you need to buy some extra space when September 30 rolls around, or are you all set?

Siri shows incorrect weather forecasts for New Yorkers

If you are in New York City, New York and recently asked Siri to tell you about the weather forecast for a few upcoming days, you may be in for a surprise. Siri is going to tell you that the weather is going to stay in the mid-90s for a few days, which is a bit too hot for the New Yorkers. Fortunately, that’s untrue and Siri has been making mistakes.

The voice-based personal assistant has apparently been mixing up the weather forecast of NYC with that of New York, Texas. Naturally, the weather is a lot warmer in Texas and there’s a significant difference in the temperatures between the two places. (more…)

This Iron Man 2 Blu-Ray Is Your Genius-Billionaire-Playboy-Philanthropist Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

Until recently, Dealzmodo was phasing out deals on disc media. There’s a plethora of online options to stream or download, and many laptops and desktops don’t even come with optical drives anymore. It seemed like the right time to take DVDs and Blu-rays out to pasture. But many of you—committed Dealz readers—wrote us, or commented on posts that you loved discs. You pointed out that both Google and iTunes use compression to deliver HD content, and that Blu-rays offered the highest possible video quality. You suggested that that owning a physical object is different than renting bits and bytes. And you proposed that since optical media is somewhat on its way out, there’s bound to be great deals on discs. More »

Verizon has no plans to re-lock iPhone 5’s GSM and 3G sides

Verizon has no plans to relock iPhone 5's GSM and 3G sides

When we learned that Verizon wouldn’t lock the GSM-related components of the iPhone 5, we were waiting for a “gotcha” moment. Surely the carrier would clamp down and steer us back towards its more expensive roaming plans, right? Not according to Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney: she says there’s no plans to lock Apple’s handset at a later point. In other words, you should be free to use a Verizon-locked iPhone 5 on any compatible GSM and HSPA+ networks for as long as you’d like, including with AT&T and Canadian carriers. Of course, this still brings the caveats of having to both buy a Verizon model, either at full price or with a contract attached, and track down a nano-SIM for the carrier of choice. It could nonetheless settle the question of what carrier to pick if you regularly need a passport when you travel — especially knowing that neither AT&T nor Sprint will be quite so open-minded.

Apple will soon met SBB over iPad app’s clock design

Apple recently dished out a new clock app for iPad in its iOS 6 update. As soon as the update was out, it was discovered that the design of the analog clock used by the new iPad clock app is identical to the design of clocks used on the stations of Swiss Federal Railways (SBB).

Soon SBB released a statement citing that it held the rights to the design of the clock and that Apple had made use of the design without first seeking permission from it. It also cited that the design was originally created as far back as 1944 and has since been used across multiple railway stations in Switzerland. (more…)

Ntrig release teases that Fujitsus Stylistic Q702 will come with active pen

Stylus maven N-trig has revealed that Fujitsu’s Stylistic Q702 laptop/tablet hybrid will be the first to shop with the company’s new G4 DuoSense pen and multi-touch digitizer. As such, it’ll be able to use a new active pen stylus that the company, perhaps unsurprisingly, promises will provide a “pen-on-paper handwriting experience.” Of course, we won’t be able to judge that for ourselves until the units arrive on our doorstep some time after Windows 8 does next month, but rest assured, we’ll be checking.

iOS 5.1 for Apple TV Enhances AirPlay Capabilities and Suggests Apps Might Arrive Soon [Apple]

The Apple TV software has been updated in a very quiet manner, but the new functionality contained in that update—AirPlay broadcasting, support multiple iTunes account, shared photo streams—is more substantial than it first seems. And the fact that you can now rearrange icons on the home screen suggest that proper support for iOS apps could finally be on the way. More »

India’s Aakash 2 Android tablet arriving next month for $35

Over in India there’s an extremely cheap Android tablet being deployed by the government to families, schools and more. We’ve talked about the Aakash tablet more than a few times, but this new and improved Aakash 2 tablet for just $35 dollars is set to arrive throughout India starting next month.

Formerly known as the Ubislate 7+ or the DataWind tablet, this new device isn’t anything extremely impressive or powerful, but it has a capacitive touch display, runs Android, and of course is extremely cheap. The Aakash 2 Tablet will be arriving on the 1 year anniversary as the original starting mid October.

Back in April we heard it was going to get released and then updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and it appears that is still the plan — although it will launch with Gingerbread. The Aakash 2 tablet rocks a 7-Inch display, an ARM Cortex-A8 processor clocked at 1 GHz, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, front facing camera, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread to keep things somewhat smooth. They’ve even added a SIM slot for phone capabilities, as well as microSD card slot support for expanding storage limits.

We’ve heard talk of more than 200 million of these slates being produced, and today they’ve detailed over 5.5 million orders just over the past few months. Just like the original, the Aakash 2 is being supplied to millions and millions of students completely free, and will run you INR 2000 (approx. $35) at retail stores throughout India. Apparently they’ll also be issuing an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich at some point, but when is still unknown.
