Samsung Galaxy S III Jelly Bean rollout begins

Samsung has begun pushing out the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S III, with users in Europe reporting that the new software has showed up through the KIES update app. The 282.5MB update includes Google’s new Project Butter interface acceleration and support for Google Now, though is being pushed out via tethered upgrade rather than OTA (over-the-air) tipsters told AllAboutSamsung.

For the moment, it’s Eastern European countries which appear to be getting Jelly Bean on the GSIII first, including Poland, Croatia, Macedonia, and Serbia. The release is likely to be a staged one, with Samsung being mindful of its server stability and responsiveness, both of which could be affected if hammered by eager Android addicts wanting to upgrade.

Nonetheless, an OTA update is likely in the pipeline too, though a quick check of a UK Galaxy S III suggested it wasn’t available yet. Similarly, KIES in the UK did not offer up any new firmware version, telling us Ice Cream Sandwich was the most recent for our phone.

Sales of the Galaxy S III have set new records for Samsung. The company announced it had moved 20m of the smartphones in the first 100 days of availability, with little sign of demand slowing. Jelly Bean will add various behind-the-scenes tweaks, though the outward interface will still be Samsung’s own TouchWiz.

First official Jelly Bean OTA update for the Samsung Galaxy S III lands in Poland

First official Jelly Bean OTA update for the Galaxy S III lands in Poland

The long-awaited roll-out appears to have commenced, with lucky GS III owners in Poland being among the first to get an early official taste of Android 4.1.1. If you hadn’t heard, the update will bring a host of subtle yet powerful improvements, including Google Now for anticipating search queries, smooth UI improvements from Project Butter, as well as some Samsung extras already seen on the Galaxy Note II, such as a resizable Pop-up play screen. Hopefully this means the update will soon be sent on its merry way to GS IIIs in other parts of the Old World, and maybe at some point — dare we suggest it — those in the US too.

‘Unusual Suspects’: Little Girl Abducted On Her Way To Pick Up Groceries (VIDEO)

A little girl on her way to pick up some groceries. But Maria Piceno never made it home that day in 1995. Her story was revealed on “Unusual Suspects,” and the key to solving the mystery of who killed her came in how she died.

It was two weeks before 8-year-old Maria’s body was found near a creek. Investigators determined that she had been suffocated, and it was this detail that convinced another woman to get involved. Recalling similar abuses from her own childhood, this woman told authorities she suspected her own brother of perhaps killing this young girl.

Gene McCurdy was a Navy Petty Officer with a clean record. Police found him on his ship when they went to arrest him. They also found a warehouse space where he kept a collection of child pronography.

Onkyo DS-A5 grafts AirPlay on to existing home stereos, docks older iOS gear

Onkyo DSA5 grafts AirPlay on to existing home stereos, docks older iOS gear

Embracing AirPlay has usually involved a wholesale switch in hardware: years of speaker investment go out the window for the sake of skipping a wire. Onkyo doesn’t have a problem if you bring your own equipment to the fray. Its new DS-A5 docking station brings Apple’s WiFi media streaming to many home stereos, including those of rivals, as long as there’s a wired or 802.11g-capable wireless router to feed the connection. Naturally, there’s perks if you do live in an Onkyo universe — any link using its Remote Interactive cable can both wake the stereo through AirPlay as well as control the dock from a traditional remote. About the only oddities are the vintage composite video output and a 30-pin dock for charging iPads, iPhones and iPods, neither of which will be much help if you live on the cutting edge. Onkyo brings the DS-A5 to American shores in October for $199; that’s a lot to pay for playing songs from the couch, but it’s a sight more affordable than replacing home audio equipment costing multiple times that amount.

Samsung offers Galaxy S III in pink, but only in Korea to start

Samsung adds pink to Galaxy SIII palette

In the last round of color additions to its flagship Galaxy S III smartphone, Samsung took a decidedly sombre tone, with new hues like Titanium Gray and Amber Brown. But, according to GSM Arena, the smartphone maker decided to lighten things up this time, going with a pale pink to round out its color selection for the model to a lucky seven — but the new shade will only roll out to Korea, for now. It will go along with the original Marble White and Pebble Blue, plus the aforementioned dark colors which were accompanied by Garnet Red and Sapphire Black. There’s no mention of availability stateside, but if you’ve been thinking of settling for a less capable model to matchy-match with Fifi, now you can go with power and panache.

Foxconn freezes production after 2,000-strong brawl

Foxconn has frozen production at a Chinese facility after violence broke out and eventually escalated to involve around 2,000 workers, requiring police intervention to settle the dispute. Approximately 40 people were injured after what Foxconn describes as a “personal dispute” snowballed at the Taiyuan plant, the BBC reports, with Chinese state media claiming it had been “triggered by a conflict” involving workers and a restaurant owner.

Foxconn is helping police with investigations to narrow down the exact cause of the aggression, spokesperson Louis Woo told Bloomberg. The downtime at the plant is described as an opportunity for tensions to ease before work resumes. “We want to give people time to cool down” Woo said, denying that it had been triggered by work-related complaints. Photos taken on-site apparently show damage to buildings and other facilities [image via Bill Bishop] though Foxconn has not details what repairs must be made.

Although Foxconn counts Apple among its customers, and is responsible for manufacturing the iPhone 5, the company would not confirm whether production of the new smartphone would be affected by the facility’s closure. However, analysts have suggested that it is more likely to be a hub for producing Nintendo’s Wii and other devices.

According to local reports, the fight between rival groups of workers began at 11pm on Sunday evening outside a company-run dormitory. Foxconn security and police became involved, and the violence was subdued by around 3am, Woo claimed, with several people arrested. 79,000 people are employed overall at the Taiyuan plant.

Foxconn has come under prolonged investigation over concerns regarding working conditions and employee rights in recent months. The company passed a Fair Labor Association assessment, but was later embarrassed by an insider-exposé when a Chinese journalist reported damningly from within one factory having secretly found work there.
