The iPhone 5 Has Arrived: But Which iPhone Is The Best Value?

iPhone5-iphone4s

The iPhone 5 is now on sale in most launch markets starting today, and as daylight approaches on the U.S. west coast, the coveted device will be hitting that market as well. According to early reviews, it’s a great device, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right one for everybody. Even if you’re still a potential iPhone buyer, the lineup has never looked so good. The iPhone 4 and the 4S remain on the market, and they both have a lot to offer, too, at a considerable discount.

Here’s a handy guide to what you get with each device, created by TechCrunch. We’ve tried to distill it down to the most important factors, and when you combine this with our chart detailing what each model does and doesn’t get with the iOS 6 update, you should have an easier time deciding which one to pick up.

With most of the software features and a form factor some might actually prefer, the iPhone 4S at $99 is a mighty fine-looking deal. It’ll be interesting to see, once carrier data and Apple’s own quarterly results come in, how popular that remains as a second tent pole in Apple’s overall lineup.

Of course, one other important factor to consider might be availability. The iPhone 5 will likely be scarce today, with lineups around the world sizeable at Apple Stores this morning, if you’ve got your heart set on the iPhone 5 it’s probably worth waiting for.

HP Probook 4545s notebook runs off an AMD processor

Are you extremely particular about the kind of processor that your budget-friendly notebook has underneath the hood? I suppose if you have answered in the negative, then you would be pleased to hear that the HP Probook 4545s notebook will be able to pack in quite a decent performance without breaking the bank, while running on an AMD processor to boot. You know the saying, it does not matter what color the cat is, as long as it is capable of catching mice. Well, the HP Probook 4545s notebook is said to be specially designed for the enterprise market, so you can be sure that a handful of key points such as durability, multimedia capability, performance and a full array of ports are taken into consideration.

When it comes to the issue of durability, it is rather obvious that folks who are always busy as a bee and are on-the-go tend to put have their precious notebooks endure some rather harsh moments, through transportation and perhaps even the environment. Good to know that HP has taken the corrective steps to make sure that HP Probook 4545s’ chassis remains rigid all round, using aluminum that has been treated to be smudge and scratch resistant in the process.

Not only that, just in case you are feasting on a dinner of pizza and Coke again, the keyboard has been specially constructed to be spill-resistant, which is a must-have feature for business notebooks as you can never quite tell when a clumsy moment will send that can of Coke flying across the keyboard. Apart from that, there is also an integrated sensor which will park the HDD heads in order to prevent a fatal disk crash just in case you drop your HP Probook 4545s by accident.

HP has also thrown in a webcam that works decently for standard use, while a discrete GPU should make it a decent gaming machine, although do not expect to run the latest titles in the highest quality settings. It has a 15.6″ display at a resolution of 1366×768 which is not too hot in this day and age, but functional. You can have up to an AMD quad-core A8-4500M 2.8GHz + Radeon HD 7640 GPU, up to 8GB RAM, where it carries a pair of USB 3.0 ports and an equal number of USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet, and VGA connectivity. Any takers?

You Don’t Need a F*cking Case for Your iPhone 5 [Op-ed]

I’ve never used a case for my iPhone 4. Not even after the back broke for the third time. I didn’t do it because, unlike my grandma, I don’t cover my sofas with plastic. Or unlike idiots, I don’t protect my car’s front with a bra. More »

Sony Xperia T review: a new 4.6-inch smartphone flagship that isn’t quite new enough

Sony Xperia T review The new smartphone flagship that isn't quite new enough

Sony’s Xperia T goes by a few names. Depending on which country you’re in, you might pick it up as the Xperia GX, or possibly even the TX. The final review sample that’s been passed our desk, however, is the Xperia T, the European HSPA version, headed to O2’s UK stores in the coming weeks, at which point it will be free on £36 per-month contracts and likely replace the Xperia S as Sony’s Android flagship. In comparison to Sony’s Spring smartphone, there’s a similar 720p display, now stretched out to 4.6 inches, a different 13-megapixel camera, a new 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor and Android ICS — with the promise of Jelly Bean soon after it hits store. The Xperia T also revives a familiar hardware curve and has picked up onscreen Android buttons on its design journey. Design twists and promises of the latest OS aside, has Sony finally built a top-tier phone capable of going toe-to-toe with the smartphone heavyweights? Have a look after the break.

Nokia stacks up its maps next to Apple’s and Google’s, politely suggests it comes out on top

Nokia stacks up its maps next to Apple's and Google's, politely suggests it comes out on top

You might have noticed a brouhaha over map accuracy in iOS 6. Nokia undoubtedly did, as it’s using the iPhone 5 launch to remind us that its strategy has been all about location lately. The crew in Espoo has pitted Nokia Maps from the Lumia 920 against both Apple’s equivalent as well as Google Maps — and to no one’s surprise, Nokia’s own platform comes out on top. In practice, it’s a relatively frank comparison that doesn’t try to win on every point. Nokia tends to use a liberal definition of the term “3D” that includes augmented reality, but it’s otherwise willing to emphasize its advantages in offline mapping and the sheer scope of its mapping coverage. Apple’s very young mapping effort struggles, while Nokia is willing to accept that it doesn’t have as much traffic coverage as Google. There is, however, the slight problem of the Lumia 920 not yet shipping: unless you’ve been blessed with a prototype of the Windows Phone 8 device, Apple and Google are the only ones that have their latest navigation software on a phone you can actually buy. Hit the source for the full, very tall chart as well as a few sly jabs at Nokia’s competitors.

Robot Tuna to Protect America’s Watery Borders?

Are you worried about the safety of America’s waters? Rest easy. The overly paranoid folks at the Department of Homeland Security have a plan. Robotic tuna to the rescue! If that doesn’t work, we can try to stop ticking other countries off, but robots always come first cause robots are cool. And because if there were less ticked off folks we would have no reason to pay the DHS to build robot fishes.

robot tuna
A few years back, DHS Science and Technology Directorate started to fund the development of the unmanned underwater vehicle called the BIOSwimmer.  The robot was developed by Boston Engineering Corporation’s Advanced Systems Group in Waltham, Massachusetts. Yes, it was inspired by the tuna, but it’s not nearly as tasty. It sports high maneuverability in harsh environments though. You can see the robot tuna in action at about the 2:17 mark in this video clip:

The idea is that it would inspect the interior voids of ships like flooded bilges and tanks, and other hard to reach external areas. The DHS tunabot could also inspect and protect harbors and piers. If it ever hits the seas, it will probably carry out secret tuna missions we will never even hear about.

Curiosity discovers pyramid-shaped rock on Mars

Curiosity is rolling around the surface of Mars looking for interesting rocks to study. The rover has come across a rock laying on the surface of Mars with very interesting pyramid shape. The rock was discovered as Curiosity was cruising to an area known as Glenelg.

NASA researchers expect to find a combination of three different types of geological terrain in the Glenelg area. The pyramid-shaped rock is 2.5 m in front of the rover in the photograph above and measures 25 cm tall and 40 cm wide. Curiosity will take some time to test the rock before it moves on to its target area.

Researchers believe that the rock is a lump of Martian basalt, and researchers have given it a curious name. The rock is called “Jake Matijevic” and is named after the surface operations systems chief engineer for Mars Science Laboratory. Matijevic died just after Curiosity touched down on Mars on August 6.

According to scientist John Grotzinger, the pyramid-shaped rock isn’t uncommon and is believed to be a product of wind erosion. He also noted that the consensus is the rock was ejected by an impact somewhere else, possibly outside of the Gail Crater. The researcher noted that the pyramid-shaped rock is weathering slower than the material around it indicating that it’s a harder rock.

Genius Traveler 9010LS Wireless Laser Mouse

The computer mouse can be said to be one of the more essential peripherals that you should “arm” yourself with, although Mac users might beg to differ. I personally know a few MacBook and MacBook Pro owners who are so used to using their respective notebooks without the mouse, claiming that a mouse will slow them down instead, that it wavered my faith in the Windows environment, albeit for a moment. Still, I am an avid Windows notebook user, and I do say life without a mouse is incomplete, as though there is no coffee during breakfast. Well, Genius has come up with what they call the Genius Traveler 9010LS Wireless Laser Mouse, where it was specially designed in a way where right-handed folks as well as southpaws will be able to use it without feeling awkward (especially for the latter).

This is a four-button mouse that is said to be able to work on just about any surface, including glass and marble. The useful Stick-N-Go mounting paves the way for trouble-free handling when moving from place to place, and it will “communicate” with its USB Pico receiver using 2.4GHz technology. The sensitivity is adjustable too, ranging from 800 to 1200 and 1600 dpi, depending on the situation at hand. Even more interesting is the fact that it works well with either AA or AAA battery, now how about that?

Just how much is Genius asking for the Genius Traveler 9010LS wireless laser mouse? Not much really, although gamers might want to steer clear of it considering how this is more suitable for an office and home environment, rather than to furiously click your way through all 100 Paragon levels in Diablo 3. Out in North America now for $39.99 a pop, each purchase will come with the mouse itself, its USB Pico receiver, a Stick-N-Go mount, and an AA alkaline battery to get you started right out of the box.
