iOS 6 jailbroken already on iPhone 4 and 4th-gen iPod Touch

Apple released the iOS 6 update yesterday which came with a whole host of new features for iOS users. The update has finally ditched Google Maps in iOS and in its place are Apple’s own Maps. Siri has also been equipped with a number of new functions and there’s a tighter Facebook integration.

The iOS hacking community seems to have waited rather anxiously for the update. It appears that they started their jailbreaking efforts as soon as the update was released and have been able to bag a sizeable win – they have already jailbroken iOS 6 on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and 4th-gen iPod Touch. Garmin fills iOS 6 Maps gaps with mass transit guidance

Garmin has updated its iOS navigation software to help fill the gaps in the contentious Apple Maps app, with Navigon and StreetPilot Onboard now packing mass transit information along with iOS 6 compatibility. The updates include an Urban Guidance mode which offers train, bus, tram, and water taxi route planning, features which Apple’s homegrown Maps app does not support.

Meanwhile, there’s also a Last Mile function which will remember the location of a parked car and help a driver return to it later on, useful if you’re easily confused by extensive parking lots. StreetPilot Onboard also adds Google Maps Street View data, which was previously accessible on the iPhone and iPad via Google Maps but, as of iOS 6, is no longer available.

However, some of the selling points Garmin’s software had previously – namely turn-by-turn navigation – now runs the risk of being eclipsed by Maps’ native guidance abilities, also freshly added in iOS 6. It’s also worth noting that the Urban Guidance system is a paid add-on through in-app purchase – priced at $2.99 – though it does include transit line information and integrate with Apple’s transit system within Maps.

Garmin is unlikely to be the only company keen to occupy the space vacated by Google Maps, though whether the company’s $44.99 price tag for Garmin StreetPilot Onboard USA or $39.99 for Navigon will be forced down in the process remains to be seen. Meanwhile, web-based alternatives are already available, such as Nokia Maps, which also include turn-by-turn guidance, public transportation, traffic monitoring, and more.

Garmin Navigon: An App To Dry Your iOS 6 Navigation Tears [App Of The Day]

Apple’s Maps app is horrifying—in its apocalyptic world, the Statue of Liberty is no more, the Brooklyn Bridge is blown out, and everything is awful. Desperately searching for an alternative? Conveniently enough, Garmin has getting ready to release a huge update to its iOS navigation app, Navigon. More »

Apple’s Shake-To-Charge Patent Trades Calories for Battery Life [Patents]

Its larger form factor and bigger battery mean the iPhone 5 should last longer on a single charge. But to overcome the fact that battery technology still basically sucks, Apple has applied for a ‘shake to charge’ patent that uses electromagnetic induction to convert everyday motions into extra battery life. German prosecution charges HP staff with bribing Russian officials to clinch PC contract

HP prints money

The legal system’s engines can take awhile to get churning, but there’s no questioning the impact when they’re at full bore. German prosecutors have wrapped up an almost three-year investigation into allegations of HP managers’ bribery by charging the executives involved. Hilmar Lorenz, Päivi Tiippana and Ken Willett, along with claimed accomplice Ralf Krippner, have all been indicted for supposedly funneling €7.5 million ($9.7 million) in bribes through a German subsidiary and far-flung shell accounts to land a €35 million ($45.3 million) PC supply deal with Russia’s Prosecutor General Office early in the previous decade. While only the people directly attached to the scandal currently face any consequences if found guilty, German lawyers are motioning to have the PC builder attached to the case, and there’s a chance the formal charges could fuel an ongoing US investigation. HP is cooperating even as it’s trying to distance itself from the indictments as much as possible — these are for old allegations and a “former HP company,” it says. While we don’t yet know the whole story, it may be a protracted tale knowing that at least Tiippana and Willett plan to fight the accusations.

Amusement Park Riders Get Stuck 300 Feet in the Air

I go to amusement parks, but if I’m being honest, I’m not a big fan of heights. I don’t tell people I’m afraid of heights because I don’t want to be a puss. So I do the next best thing, I walk really slowly and scream at anyone who touches me even slightly because I’m convinced I’ll suddenly fly off those high platforms. It woudn’t have been a good day for me to be at Knott’s Berry Farm in California when 20 riders were stuck for four hours, 300 feet in the air.

stuck

The 20 people were riding the Windseeker ride, which takes the people over 30 stories into the sky, with their legs hanging in the wind, and spins them around. One woman says her husband kept her from having what I’ll call a “bat sh*t crazy” moment because she’s afraid of heights. She says he kept her calm, but the first half-hour was difficult.

Eventually maintenance workers were able to get all of the riders to the ground between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m., which was long after the park closed. This is the second time this month riders of this particular ride were left stuck in the air. Knott’s Berry Farm says the ride will remain closed until they can find the cause of the issue.

You Can’t Spoof SMS Messages on Your iPhone Anymore [Security]

The SMS protocol on iOS has had an issue wherein you’re able to manipulate the little-used “Reply To” field in a text message to make it look like it was coming from anyone you wanted it to. But with the proper release of iOS 6 the days of pulling that stunt on an iPhone are over. More »

Acer officially reveals Windows 8 tablets pricing

We reported earlier about Acer’s leaked roadmap which divulged the prices of its upcoming Windows 8 tablets. We were able to have a fair estimate of the prices we may see on the Asus Vivo Tab RT, Vivo Tab and Taichi tablets. However, these prices weren’t the official word and Acer hasn’t confirmed them yet.

What Acer has confirmed, however, is the prices of two of its Iconia Windows 8 tablets. While mum is the word for the company in the rest of the world, it has quietly released the prices in New Zealand. That may give us an idea of what we may expect for the prices of Iconia tablets to be  in other countries. (more…)

Chrome experiment explores new types of navigation, degrees of embarrassment

Chrome experiment reveals embarrassing wonders of bodily navigation

What you’re about to see, should you choose to click the source link below, is far from perfect. On the other hand, it’s clearly had a lot of effort and expertise put into it — not only by HTML5-savvy coders, but also by a troupe of performers from the Cirque du Soleil. It’s called Movi.Kanti.Revo, which is a fancy way of saying Move.Sing.Dream, and it involves navigating through an ethereal and slightly laggy landscape using only swaying gestures, your singing voice (mournful sobbing sounds also worked for us) and a bunch of APIs that conveniently fail to work on FireFox, Safari or Internet Explorer. It’s well-suited to those with a mic and webcam, preferably sitting in a open-plan and bully-ridden workplace, and if you don’t like it there’s always Bastion.

Circle Pad Pro For the 3DS XL Makes It Even More Monstrous [3ds]

There are no details on pricing or availability, but as expected, Nintendo has revealed a version of its Circle Pad Pro accessory for the 3DS XL. The add-on further embiggens the already hefty handheld console with an additional analog control stick—a feature that many had hoped would have been included in the re-designed version of the 3DS, but wasn’t.
