HTC 8X and 8S priced up: iPhone 5 and GSIII undercut

HTC refused to be drawn on pricing for its new Windows Phone 8X and 8S smartphones, saying only that they’d launch in November, but that hasn’t stopped retailers stepping up with some SIM-free numbers. The good news is that, even without a subsidy to help out, both Windows Phone 8 devices undercut key rivals like the iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S III.

Retailer Clove has the 8X up for preorder at £399.99 including tax ($648), while the 8S is listed at £224.99 including tax ($364). In contrast, UK sales of the iPhone 5 kick off at £529 ($856), again including tax, while you can pick up a Galaxy S III unlocked and SIM-free for £462 ($748).

UK pricing factors in the not-inconsiderable 20-percent tax rate, and we’d expect both Windows Phones to be cheaper in the US. Still, they’re some ambitious numbers from HTC, and given Windows Phone 8 has an uphill struggle to claw market-share from iOS and Android, undercutting the flagship from both platforms is a sensible strategy.

HTC 8X and 8S hands-on:

It also bodes well for on-contract pricing, though while networks AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile USA have all confirmed they’ll be offering both models (with some LTE flavors too) subsidized numbers aren’t available yet. We’ll know more closer to launch in November.

We grabbed some hands-on playtime with the new phones, so check out our first-impressions of the 8X and of the 8S.

T-Mobile USA offers free copy of The Avengers to Samsung Galaxy S III owners

If you’re the owner of a Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone on the T-Mobile USA network, and happen to like super heroes, you’re going to love this. T-Mobile USA has announced that it, and Samsung are going to be enhancing features for all Galaxy S III smartphones on the T-Mobile network. That means new features will be added for both new buyers and existing customers.

The updated feature set will begin rolling out on September 25. The coolest part about the updated feature set is that Samsung and T-Mobile will begin offering the Marvel film The Avengers free for new and existing customers. The movie will be available as a virtual download for existing customers via the Samsung Media Hub and will be preloaded on new S III devices.

The movie will only be offered for free on the T-Mobile network. T-Mobile customers will also be able to wirelessly share the content to compatible TVs via the AllShare Cast feature and the AllShare Case Wireless Hub. The Avengers is being offered on September 25, which is the same day the movie hits Blu-ray, pay-per-view, and DVD.

The AllShare Cast Wireless Hub is a new accessory that will sell for $99.99 with availability set for September 24. Using that hub, T-Mobile customers will be able to watch streaming content from the smartphones on the bigger screen in the living room. It’s very cool to see T-Mobile and Samsung offering the biggest movie of the year at no cost to all T-Mobile S III owners.

Turtle Beach reveals Ear Force NLa and Ear Force N11 Wii U-certified gaming headsets

If you’re looking for a pair of gaming headphones to complete your Nintendo Wii U experience, you might be interested to learn that popular audio manufacturer, Turtle Beach, has announced that they will be producing some gaming headsets for the Wii U console. These are the Ear Force NLa and the Ear Force N11 (pictured above), both of which will plug into the Wii U’s GamePad, and both of which will be available in Q4 of this year and will be priced at $35 and $50 respectively.

Starting with the Ear Force NLa, this headset will come with an in-line volume control, a microphone and will be available in either black or white. The Ear Force N11 will feature “acoustically angled” 50mm speakers which apparently will help create “extended bass”. This might be why it is priced at a slightly more expensive $50. We doubt that these will satisfy many audiophiles out there but if you’re just looking for a gaming headset for your Wii U, perhaps Turtle Beach’s reputation and its relatively affordable price tag should make these headsets an attractive option.

These ceramic animal speakers are cute and inconspicuous

Speakers come in all shapes and sizes, but these ceramic animal speakers not only look pretty classy, but are pretty inconspicuous as well. After all, on first glance and if we did not tell you, you probably would have thought of these as decorative mantle/shelf pieces, right? Granted they were originally designed to be mere decorative pieces, they have been fitted with 40mm passive speakers that rely on the hollowed interior of the figurine to help amplify the sound. Interestingly thanks to its passive speakers, it will not require a battery or a power source to operate. Instead it will use the power from your smartphone to juice it up, consuming 2 watts of power in the process.

As if playing music on our phones didn’t drain the battery already, now we have to contend with the speakers relying on our phones to power it! Either way if that doesn’t faze you and you wouldn’t mind getting your hands on these speakers, they are available in six different animal designs and some fruit designs as well and will set you back $88.23. Pop on over to GeekStuff4U to place your order.

New Samsung commercial mocks iPhone 5 hopefuls who are waiting in line

It is almost like tradition that whenever a major Apple product has been released, like the iPhone or the iPad, there are people out there who love to queue up for it. Perhaps they don’t own a credit card which might explain why they don’t buy it online, or perhaps they just enjoy the queuing up process which gives them the chance to meet like-minded people and make friends in the process. Either way these queues are indeed long, tedious and incredibly competitive, with some waiting in line for days just to get their hands on Apple’s latest and greatest.

That is definitely a fact that Samsung has picked up on and has been used to poke fun at Apple users and iPhone hopefuls in a new commercial released by the South Korean company. It basically makes fun of those who stand in line while extoling the virtues of the company’s flagship phone, the Galaxy S3, and the things that it can do and the features that it has way before the iPhone 5 was introduced. Some of things pointed out are glaring truths but overall it’s still a rather humorous video that hopefully the most ardent Apple fanboy can take in stride.

ZTE confirms Blade III Android 4.0 smartphone, makes Nordic debut with two color options

ZTE confirms Blade III Android 40 smartphone, will debut in Scandinavia with two color options

It might have over-keenly popped up online just a few weeks ago, but now ZTE’s given the Blade III the official nod. As suspected, it bears a 4-inch 800 x 480 display, runs on a 1GHz Qualcomm chip, and offers Android 4.0 with 512MB of RAM to play with. The internal memory is confirmed as 4GB, with the OS taking up some of that, but there is (thankfully) the option to expand up to 32GB via SD, and that 5-megapixel shooter to use for filling it up. The HSPA phone will be getting a Nordic debut (much the same as its Nordic leak) with the black version landing in Sweden for 1,499 SEK (about $228) in October, but is available in white this month in Finland. Other “key markets” in Europe can look forward to seeing the Blade III sometime later this year.

I’m sure almost everyone out there is familiar with the name Polaroid. If you grew up in the 80s, someone you knew had one of those Polaroid instant cameras that spit photographs out the front. Sony ‘Prototype-SR’ spotted at TGS 2012: the HMZ-T2 tacks on a camera, plays with user perception (video)

Sony 'PrototypeSR' spotted at TGS the HMZT2 tacks on a camera for enhanced 3D measures

Remember the Sony HMZ-T2 3D head-mounted display that we tried on back at IFA? Well, it’s being prominently featured here at TGS, too. Tucked away at a smaller, much more modest booth around the corner, however, is something a smidge more interesting. Kept behind glass and a safe distance away from our grubby mitts and sweaty foreheads resides the “Prototype-SR” (Substitutional Reality) that was outed on YouTube last week. Essentially, the unit appears to be the HMZ-T2 with a front-mounted camera for head tracking and camera functionality — the sort of thing that will provide what’s being called a 360-degree immersive entertainment experience. From what we can tell from the booth monitors, the unit displays 3D video overlaid in real space for the person wearing the device. Details are scarce and extremely limited demos were available in an apparent lottery (no luck here). You can rest assured that if we’re able to snag one, though, we’ll be sure to offer up some impressions. For now, take a look at the camera-wielding set of hi-tech goggles in the gallery below and the aforementioned video awaits just past the break.

The Lensbaby Spark accessory will let you create distorted photos

Sure we could always edit our photos on the computer after taking them, but sometimes that’s just an additional unnecessary step if a photograph was taken with the right settings and the right technique. However if you prefer experimenting with your photographs then the new Lensbaby Spark add-ons might be worth checking out. For those wondering what the Spark does, it basically allows the photographer to create a tilt-shift effect where they can choose where they want the focus to be in a photo while the rest of the background is blurred out, or “bokeh” if you’d rather. The lens on the Spark can be swapped out with other lenses from Lensbaby, letting photographers mix and match and come up with some unique creations and with a price tag of $80, it’s not the most expensive camera accessory you can buy and could be worth getting your hands on for some interesting photos. More details about the Spark can be found on Lensbaby’s website along with sample photos and a way to place your order.
