iPhone 5 sold in Hong Kong’s grey market for a whopping $1,100

In countries where MNCs choose not to launch their products in first, you have to be thankful for the grey market as it basically gives customers access to devices before they have been officially launched for that particular region. While Hong Kong will be getting the iPhone 5 on the 21st of September along with other selected countries, it seems that the iPhone 5 has already made it into the country’s grey market where they are being sold for a whopping $1,100. Of course these models are unlocked but at $1,100, they are a few hundred dollars more than they would cost if purchased officially.

Then again we suppose there are plenty of iPhone 5 hopefuls out there who would love to have bragging rights at being able to get it before their friends or co-workers do, and wouldn’t mind paying a premium for it. The seller, Mr. Lo, even has a standing offer where he will pay for sealed iPhone 5s at a premium of up to $200 on their original price. The reason? He believes that due to the iPhone 5 selling out so fast and with shipments now slipping to 3-4 weeks, there will still be buyers out there who will pay top dollar to skip the wait.

Sprint hits 1 million 4G LTE devices sold

Sprint logoWhile Sprint might be late to the 4G LTE game (not that bad given that T-Mobile hasn’t rolled out their 4G LTE network yet), they have certainly wasted no time and in a recent report, the carrier has boasted that they have since managed to sell a total of 1 million 4G LTE devices. This was announced by Sprint’s CEO, Dan Hesse, who was speaking at a Goldman Sachs Communicopia Conference in New York. Some have speculated that Apple’s iPhone 5 might have helped Sprint hit that 1 million milestone but we have to admit that that’s a bit arrogant, especially given that the iPhone 5 has not yet been released.

We expect that other top-notch devices like the Samsung Galaxy S3 played a part along with the upcoming Galaxy Note 2. We’re not sure exactly what the breakdown is, but kudos to Sprint for reaching that 1 million mark nonetheless. So if you were thinking about switching to a different carrier with LTE, perhaps Sprint’s continued success might be worth your consideration. [Press release]

Matias Duarte believes that Android’s UI is only 33% done

Love or hate the Android UI, it’s most definitely a matter of preference, but if you were leaning more towards disliking it and are hoping to see Google make more improvements to it in the future, it seems that these views are shared by Matias Duarte, the person who is responsible behind the look and feel of Android. In a response to a comment on his Google+ account, Duarte agreed by saying that he personally does not feel that the Android UI is complete and that they still have a lot of work ahead of them.

“It’s true, we still have a lot of work to do. Personally I feel like I’ve gotten only about a third of the way to where I want to be with regards to consistency, responsiveness, and polish.

Better get back to work!”

Based on the feedback of many and having tried it ourselves, the Jelly Bean update to Android certainly brought about a much smoother experience compared to previous versions of Android, and if they are only a third of their way through, it certainly looks like we can expect many good things from Android in the future.

Fan-made “Blackberry Love” commercial is certainly attention grabbing, but might not be entirely appropriate [NSFW]

While advertisements might not necessarily get you to buy the product, it puts the product and/or the company into your mind, thus creating awareness. While we’re not sure if this is how RIM might want to market themselves and their Blackberry devices, a fan has put together a commercial that well, will most certainly have no problems grabbing the attention of many. Called “Blackberry Love”, it is a very suggestive commercial and you probably should watch these with your headphones on and probably not at work, lest your boss thinks you’re up to no good. If you are the boss then by all means, go ahead! In the meantime what do you guys think? Do you think RIM should start making these sorts of edgy commercials to help grab the market’s attention, or do you think that this would be rather inappropriate for a company whose devices are sort of synonymous with working professionals?

MakerBot Replicator 2 desktop 3-D printer debuts

MakerBot Industries has unveiled a brand-new desktop 3-D printer that the company claims is the easiest, fastest, and most affordable tool yet for constructing 3-D models. The new printer is called the MakerBot Replicator 2 and is aimed at engineers, researchers, creative professionals, and anyone else who likes to make 3-D models.

The Replicator 2 has a 100-micron layer resolution, which the manufacturer says is a new standard in professional looking models and accurate, lifelike replicas. The printer is also capable of making large objects up to 410 cubic inches in volume. That works means items as large as 11.2-inches long by 6-inches wide by 6.1-inches high can be made.

The new 3-D printer also ships with updated software enabling faster and more consistent printing. The printer is optimized to work with MakerBot PLA filament. This filament is a renewable bioplastic that is the most popular build material used in 3-D printing. The material is popular thanks to its strength and the ability to make large products without the material cracking or warping.

One interesting feature of the Replicator 2 is that you can make multiple models at one time thanks the large build volume. The slicing engine is also up to 20 times faster than previous technology to allow for quicker printing. The Replicator 2 Desktop Printer sells for $2199.
