OS X Lion hits 10.7.5 with most recent update, brings improved security with Gatekeeper

While the latest software for OS X Lion isn’t nearly as exciting as a couple of other updates that Apple released today, Lion users will find a few worthwhile improvements within the new OS X 10.7.5 update. Most importantly, the latest software introduces Gatekeeper, a security feature from Mountain Lion that makes it more difficult to inadvertently install malicious software. The update also brings improved WiFi reliability for the iMac (late 2009 and newer) and squashes a bug that’d caused Launchpad icons to become rearranged. You’ll find an even greater number of fixes / improvements after the break, and it’s also worth a mention that even Snow Leopard users have received a bit of love today in the form of a security update. Want to prove you’re a good cat owner? Go ahead and check for new updates right away.

Universal Peripheral Batteries: A Great Idea That’ll Never Work [Patents]

Imagine if everything on your desk was powered by identical batteries, all of which could be recharged by slipping them into matching charging slots on the side of your computer. It might not be ubiquitous wireless charging, but it still sounds pretty great, right? More »

HP ENVY Phoenix m9 PC gets super-slim 11mm x2401 Full HD display pairing

HP isn’t all about new notebooks today; the company also has a meaty new ENVY desktop along with a super-skinny Full HD LCD display. The HP ENVY Phoenix h9 offers a choice of Intel Ivy Bridge processors and either AMD or NVIDIA graphics, with a choice of regular hard-drive or SSD storage, and an illuminated case which the company claims looks “armor-plated” but which we reckon has a touch of the fish gills about it.

Still, you get internal space for three drives, with tool-free bays and re-configured cable routing for boosted airflow around the chassis. Liquid cooling is an option, as is an ExpressCache SSD for curtailed boot times and app loading, and there’s Beats Audio branding too.

As for the HP x2401 display, that comes in at 24-inches with Full HD resolution, but its real appeal is its thickness – or lack of. It measures a mere 11mm deep, and can be stripped of its easel desk-stand for wall mounting.

Ports include DisplayPort and HDMI, and HP sensibly quotes both a proper contrast ratio (5,000:1) along with the near-meaningless 10,000,000:1 dynamic ratio, something rival firms could definitely learn from. There’ll also be a business version, the HP L2401x.

The HP ENVY Phoenix m9 will go on sale October 26, priced from $899. Meanwhile, the HP x2401 will arrive November 7, priced at $249, while its commercial counterpart will be $10 more but land two days earlier.

Roku mobile app could be your new favorite remote control

It seems that the official Roku mobile app is now available for download, and there is every possibility of it ending up as the best remote in the house, but I guess a lot of that is also subject to personal tastes and preferences. With the new and improved Roku mobile app, you are now able to stream your carefully pruned music playlists as well as favorite photos straight from your iPhone or Android device to the spanking new Smart TV in your living room, courtesy of the new Play on Roku feature.

To sweeten the deal, Roku has made available this new mobile app for free, which is a surefire way of making sure plenty of people download it and give it a go. Who says there is no free lunch in this world any more? I guess there are moments when some of the finer and better things in life still come across as free. International customers will be pleased to discover that the app will be available in the UK, Canada and Ireland later today.

Play on Roku works great with the entire range of Roku 2 models, the current-generation Roku HD player (model #2500), and Roku LT (models #2400 and 2450), in addition to the upcoming Roku Streaming Stick.

HP ENVY m4 and Sleekbook 14 and 15 ultraportables revealed

HP has outed a new range of lightweight notbeooks, kicking off with the metal-clad HP ENVY m4 thin-and-light, and including the Sleekbook 14 and 15 for the mainstream. The ENVY m4 slots a choice of Intel Core i3/i5 processors inside its aluminum casing, paired with up to 8GB of RAM and a 1,366 x 768 display; HP tells us we can expect up to eight hours.

There’s also a choice of SSD or HDD storage, the option of a backlit keyboard, and integrated optical drive, and an HD webcam. Intel WiDi wireless display streaming is supported, and there’s both stereo speakers and a subwoofer squeezed inside, with Beats Audio branding. A fingerprint scanner in the palmrest closes out security.

The HP ENVY m4 will go on sale from October 26, priced from $899.99.

As for the Sleekbook 14 and 15 – offering, unsurprisingly, 14-inch and 15.6-inch display options, both running at HD resolution – with Intel doing processor duty on the larger model and AMD’s chips running the smaller version. HDMI, USB 3.0, and USB 2.0 connectivity, along with HD webcams and optional discrete NVIDIA graphics make up the bulk of the specs, and the larger Sleekbook 15 gets a numeric keypad too.

The HP Sleekbook 14 kicks off at $499.99, while the Sleekbook 15 starts at $559.99; both will go on sale from October 26.

All your Google Maps are belong to us

If you are an avid user of Google Maps, then surely you would know that the latest version of Google Maps will bump it up to version number 6.12, and the good people over at Google have thrown in additional useful and comprehensive features, where the few improvements made are able to better sync your maps experience across all the entire collection of your devices. The updated Google Maps for Android will allow you to perform faster and more accurate searches right there and then on the browser of your Android-powered smarphone.

All you need to do is make sure that you remain signed in to Google Maps, and enable your web history, and you are set to enjoy a slew of new benefits that will include search and directions history. The moment you begin to type a place or directions into the search box on your Android device, the most likely suggestions from Google for both directions and locations that you’ve previously searched for will pop up, making the entire process far more efficient than ever before. Not only that, you are also able to check out your mapping search history and directions history on your Android phone by going to the “Search” or “Directions” tab under My Places.

iOS 6 jailbroken already, but only on older A4-powered iPhones and iPods

iOS 6 gets it jailbreak already, but only on older A4powered iPhones and iPods

iOS 6 probably won’t go down in history as a revolutionary update, but fortunately it’s anti-tamper measures don’t seem to have changed much either. The iPhone Dev-Team has already managed to get its redsn0w tethered jailbreak working, at least for the A4-powered iPhone 4, 3GS and 4th-gen iPod touch, and you’ll find full instructions as well as a healthy list of caveats at the source link below. As to how long it’ll take to get some Cydia action on the iPhone 5 and other fresher devices and without the hassle of tethering, place your bets here.

Roku Streaming Stick lands October; Apps updated plus Vudu added

Roku‘s Streaming Still will drop in October priced at $99, the company has confirmed, and there’s new content from Vudu and media shifting functionality in the updated mobile apps to tide you over until then. The Streaming Stick, announced back in January, eschews the regular Roku STB in favor of a smaller HDMI dongle that discretely plugs directly into a spare port on your TV and sucks MHL control signals from your normal remote if you have a compatible set.

Alternatively, there’s the motion-control Bluetooth remote that we saw introduced with the Roku 2 XS. It’s a more compact and streamlined option, particularly if you’ve wall-mounted your TV, and uses WiFi to get online (there’s no ethernet option, unsurprisingly). Some TV manufacturers will be bundling the stick as well.

As for Vudu, the subscription-free movie rental service has been added as a new channel on Roku 2, Roku HD, Roku LG, and Streaming Stick models. It allows viewers to browse by name, genre, release, populatiry, top picks, video quality, MPAA rating, studio, purchase option, and Rotten Tomatoes rating, as well as including title/actor search.

Various extras, including cast bios and trailers, are on offer, and it’s possible to preview the first two minutes of each film. Movies will be streamed in HD, and with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1/7.1 surround, and new users will get $5.99 of free credit when they pair up their Roku box.

Finally, the Roku mobile apps for iOS and Android have been updated, with the ability to stream music playlists and photo galleries from a phone or tablet directly to your TV, via a Roku 2, HD, LT, or Streaming Stick, with the new Play On Roku feature. There’s also the ability to launch channels by voice on Android devices and to rename individual Roku players to make streaming to a particular screen easier.

The new apps are now available to Roku’s international customers in the UK, Canada, and Ireland, and should be showing up in the App Store and Play market today.
