David Gilbert-Pederson, 47-Percenter: "We’re Helping Keep Our Communities Vibrant"

Four years ago, then-17-year-old David Gilbert-Pederson made headlines as the youngest delegate at the Democratic National Convention. Time Magazine published a picture of him in an Obama shirt and a backwards baseball cap, and a Minnesota blog went with a photo of him standing in a sideways half-hug with the Democratic candidate, a huge grin plastered to his boyish face.

Like so many of the other young people who helped President Barack Obama win his first term as president, Gilbert-Pederson isn’t quite the fan that he once was, and he took exception to Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney’s recent assertion that 47 percent of the country is going to vote for Obama “no matter what.” Although Gilbert-Pederson makes a salary small enough to qualify him as part of the 47 percent of Americans who don’t pay income taxes, he didn’t plan on voting for Obama until just a few weeks ago. Romney’s performance at the Republican National Convention convinced him that a Romney presidency would be bad news for the country, and specifically for his family.

Gilbert-Pederson, now a 21-year-old activist, has a cousin who suffers from cerebral palsy. While watching Romney at the convention, he began to harbor doubts that Romney would keep Medicare afloat. In recent years, Gilbert-Pederson had considered voting for a third-party candidate, but he ultimately decided not to take any chances.

Arctic Sea Ice Extent Shatters Record Low

From Climate Central’s Michael D. Lemonick:

Now it’s official: as of September 16, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, the sea ice covering the Arctic Ocean reached a record low minimum extent.

What makes this year unique is that the 2012 minimum is lower than any since modern satellite observations first began in the late 1970’s — and by a wide margin. The 2012 minimum of 1.32 million square miles (3.41 million square kilometers) shatters the previous mark of 1.61 million square miles (4.17 million square kilometers), which was set in 2007, by 18 percent.

Apple seeks $3 billion in damages from Samsung, says report

In the verdict handed down by a Californian court recently, Apple was awarded $1 billion in damages against Samsung. The jury ruled that Samsung had indeed infringed on Apple’s patents. It was speculated that Apple may push the jury further to have a number of Samsung products banned and increase the amount of fine.

Now, The Korea Times has reported that Apple indeed has plans of seeking damages to the tune of $3 billion, effectively tripling the sum that it has already been awarded by the jury. The publication says that it has been informed of this decision through ‘multiple legal sources.’ (more…)

UAV Lifeguards to patrol Australian beaches, Hasselhoff given notice

UAV Lifeguards to patrol Australian beaches

Look, up in the sky. It’s a bird, it’s a plane — it’s… a lifeguard? Aiming to keep a robotic eye out for distressed swimmers and dangerous marine life, Surf Life Saving Australia will soon deploy flying safety drones across beaches in Queensland, Australia. Starting off on a trial basis, the unmanned bots have a wingspan of one meter (about three feet) and will feature detachable safety buoys and alert sirens. While it could be the next thing in oceanside safety, we’d image that some folks won’t be too fond of being watched sans any say in the matter. That said, we’d be remiss not to mention to that SLS head Brett Williamson frankly stated to ABC that “at the end of the day this is about public safety.” Big brother conspiracy aside, we’re sure some folks could be swayed if these bad boys play Flight of the Valkyries while in formation.

Apple’s New 3D Maps Are an Apocalyptic Horror Show [Ios 6 Maps]

The move from Google Maps to Apple’s homespun cartography in iOS 6 has been a sticking point for people, largely because it’s the turd in a very ornate punch bowl. And while Apple’s fancy 3D maps were supposed to tide us over until the rest of Maps got better, they seem to be having their own problems. So we’ve gone ahead and rounded up some of the more… interesting deviations. More »

Guild Wars 2 Coming to Mac, Beta Already Available… to PC Gamers. Go Figure.

Mac gamers are grateful for Blizzard, because it’s one of the few major companies that release Mac versions of their games alongside the more popular Windows version. ArenaNet says better late than never by announcing that they will be releasing a Mac version of their new MMORPG Guild Wars 2. You can even play the beta of said Mac version right now… as long as you buy or already bought the Windows version of the game. Weird, but it’s better than nothing.

guild wars 2 mac

So what do we Mac owners have to do to play the beta? Buy the PC version – the only version that’s out now. This will allow you to make a Guild Wars 2 account, which in turn will grant you the privilege of downloading the Mac beta client online. And don’t worry about having to pay twice. Similar to what Blizzard does with their games, your purchase of Guild Wars 2 nets you both the PC and Mac version when the latter finally comes out.

If you think of it as a pre-order that grants you beta access, then it’s not so bad. If you then think harder and wonder why ArenaNet didn’t just have an open or even closed beta for Mac users without requiring a purchase, then it becomes weird again. Head to the Guild Wars 2 website for more details on the announcement.
