Toshiba Camileo BW20 camcorder loves the water, doesn’t mind drops

If you have cracked one of your smartphone’s screens in the past because you were were too clumsy, then surely you did mull over the possibility of picking up a new smartphone that was more rugged in nature. I guess the same can be said for other pieces of consumer electronics, case in point – the Toshiba Camileo BW20 camcorder.

The Toshiba Camileo BW20 is effectively waterproof up to 16 feet underwater, is resistant to dust and shockproof (which means it can withstand accidental drops of up to five feet). While not the toughest device in the world, at least it is far more rugged to your regular camcorder without sacrificing on form and functionality. Capable of producing brilliant Full HD 1080p videos and photos even under the most adverse conditions, The Camileo BW20 will feature an f/2.2 aperture lens, a 5-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, video image stabilization, an HDMI output port, and a rather useful floating wrist strap that makes sure your Camileo BW20 does not sleep with the fishes permanently.

Those who are interested will be able to pick up the Toshiba Camileo BW20 camcorder for $129.99 a pop, and it does seem to come in only one color combination – red and black. Something brighter all around might serve it better so that you can spot it even when underwater.

Everpurse iPhone Charger Juices Your Phone in The Comfort of Your Purse

Pretty much anyone who has an iPhone knows that it uses up quite a bit of power. If I’m away from home for most of the day, I absolutely need a juice up. These days, I’ve got a cheap iPhone battery case that does the trick. Everpurse is a more stylish option, with more power but it’s still an external battery.

Everpurse is a small case that has a special pocket into which your iPhone automatically “slides” and hooks itself up to a dock connector. There’s a patent involved, so I’m guessing that this is a pretty unique docking process. Once you’ve done this, your phone starts juicing up. Apparently the battery is enough to charge your iPhone from 0% to 100% twice in one day, so probably something like 3,000 to 5,000 mAh.

Once you get home, you just have to place your Everpurse onto a charging mat. The clutch itself will charge inductively, but it won’t charge your iPhone inductively. It was launched as a Kickstarter campaign and you’ll have to pledge $129 (USD) to get yours. At the time of writing, the project had amassed $127,000, blowing past its $100,000 goal with 25 days left, so it will definitely be produced.

SlashGear Morning Wrap-up: September 19, 2012

Its been a rather busy day already so lets jump in to everything you missed so far last night and this morning. Today everything is starting with the iPhone. Apple has just released iOS 6 and it’s available now, and last night you might have missed our iPhone 5 review. There’s plenty of other exciting news so lets take a peek below.

Other than the excitement from iOS rolling out to everyone, there’s big news today from that other smartphone lineup by Microsoft. Today HTC and Microsoft announced the all new HTC 8X Windows Phone 8 flagship smartphone, then followed that with their HTC 8S budget offering. Don’t worry, in the usual SlashGear fashion you can see everything about these “Lumia-like” smartphones in our hands-on. You’ll want to start with our HTC 8X hands-on, then take a quick peek at the Windows Phone 8S by HTC hands-on coverage. The proper name is Windows Phone 8X and 8S by HTC as they’ve inked a deal with Microsoft for these to be the WP8 “signature handsets.”

Google is apparently issuing a massive update to Google Maps for Android, to show off its awesome new features the iOS 6 version doesn’t have. In other odd news Sky and Warner Bro’s inked a deal for all their content, leaving iTunes and Netflix in the cold yet again. Oh and speaking of Netflix, they’ve just outed a brand new Netflix experience for iPhone 5.

Last but not least the few other important bits of news were Casio’s new cameras, and a redesigned Sony Playstation 3. Yup, this is the same old Playstation only smaller, lighter, and looks a bit different. We just want the PS4 already! Finally some of the most exciting news is from the Samsung front. Samsung has announced their new and impressive 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II will be coming to 5 major US carriers by early November. Who’s excited?

Stay tuned for more news all day long!

Apple releases OS X 10.8.2 update for Mountain Lion: Facebook integration, iMessage fixes and more

Apple releases OS X 1082 update for Mountain Lion Facebook integration, iMessage fixes and more

Looks like one major software update wasn’t enough, as Apple is following its push of iOS 6 with OS X 10.8.2. Weighing in at 697.54MB, it’s a pretty substantial update for Mountain Lion users, with that long-awaited Facebook integration chief among the changes. As Twitter presently operates within the OS, Facebook will now too enjoy single sign-on simplicity, and all of OS X’s sharing portals will now include Facebook as an option. You’ll get Facebook notifications in Notification Center, and you can share Game Center scores with your Facebook pals. It’s also being reported that this build restores laptop battery life levels to those seen with Lion.

Other new features include the addition of Power Nap for the Late 2010 MacBook Air, a few iMessage tweaks (iMessages sent to your phone number will now appear on your Mac), a new shared Reminders list and the ability to receive FaceTime calls initially sent to your phone number. Passbook users will also enjoy the newfangled ability to add passes right from Safari and Mail, and Dictation now understands Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, Korean, Canadian English (!), Canadian French and Italian. We’re installing the update now, and you can peek the full changelog after the break. Feel free to toss your post-install impressions in comments as well.

HTC Windows Phone 8S hands on!

We covered the HTC launch event this morning, and now we’ve had a chance to get a closer look at the lower-end device announced today, the Windows Phone 8S. It offers a compelling screen to body size ratio for those with smaller hands, and its two-tone design follows cues that HTC has been featuring on its high end phones for years.

LG gets patent for mobile UI that reacts to flexible displays, encourages origami

As often as companies love to toy with flexible displays, we’re seldom told how we’d control that newfound freedom. Are we supposed to make e-paper cranes? Credit LG for some forward thinking — it’s just receiving a US patent for a 2008-era user interface invention that would use a bending screen to its advantage. The implementation includes two displays, one of which flexes while the other accepts touch; bend or fold the first display, and the touchscreen changes to suit the context. Having two closely linked displays would also let the panels run either in unity or independently. Suffice it to say that the technology is unlikely to roll out as-is on a smartphone, if ever: LG’s attention has swung towards having one big touchscreen as of late. However, the interface does give the Korean firm a place to start if it develops devices to match its new flexible batteries.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S3 update arrives via OTA

Those who are rocking to the Samsung Galaxy S3 from AT&T will be pleased to hear that a spanking new OTA (Over The Air) update has been made available, weighing in at 82MB while bumping up the version to UCALH9. Just what does this latest update have to offer for Galaxy S3 owners? Well, we are looking at a slew of features that were introduced to the international variant a few weeks prior.

One of the most noticeable change would be a new brightness slider that appears in the notification dropdown, although there was feedback from users that new VPN and enterprise security enhancements are also part of the deal. It does seem as though that this update is a minor one, so if you were to give it a miss, you might not even notice anything, if at all. Just to make things clear, this OTA update will not bump up your Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, so you would do well to be patient for the moment.

You can check out the banter over at Android Central’s forums for further details, if any, concerning the latest OTA update for the Galaxy S3 for AT&T, as there is nothing in the press section of AT&T’s site at press time.

Sony Xperia T for AT&T achieves FCC victory

Sony Xperia T for AT&T achieves FCC victory

We witnessed the Sony Xperia T make its way through the FCC approval process a few days ago, but there was still something drastically missing: compatibility with AT&T LTE. But as some images published by UK retailer Phones4U attested to, we figured it was only a matter of time. Now that time has come, as the FCC pushed through the Xperia Mint Amy LT30at (the global Xperia T is the Mint Rita LT30p, if you’re keeping track) today. Not only does the Amy sport the requisite AT&T-friendly bands (4 and 17, with support for bands 2 and 5 as well), some of the docs specifically call this device out as the AT&T version. We’ve always admired Sony’s bluntness around FCC docs when other manufacturers attempt to hide as much information as possible. To do some digging of your own, have a look-see at the source link.

Alleged Samsung Galaxy S4 seen in tests with Cortex A15 processor

The Galaxy S4 exists, the Galaxy S4 does not exist, the Galaxy S4 exists…and so the merry-go-round continues. Although Samsung did come up with an official denial of the existence of the Samsung Galaxy S4 being announced at MWC 2013, there are whispers that this could be very well a cover up, as those who want to believe claim that the benchmark above is proof that the Galaxy S4 exists.

After all, it does seem to depict a new Cortex A15 processor that runs on the Samsung TE4 as spotted by Rightware. The TE4 is said to be a future-forward Android-powered smartphone which will come with a 1280 x 752 resolution display, a dual-core 1.7GHz Cortex A15 processor as well as a Mali T604 GPU, which in all probability, is the Exynos 5 SoC which Samsung announced earlier this year. Of course, all of the above could very well be just a rumor with no basis at all, so we will just have to wait until MWC happens next year which frankly, is not that far off actually.
