Seiko Star Wars Watches: Force Time!

Seiko Japan recently took wraps off a whole series of new watches based on the Star Wars saga, and there are some really awesome timepieces in the collection. While most of the series has traditional analog movements, the R2-D2 watch is all digital, and features a very cool hi-res display.

The limited-edition Seiko Brightz R2-D2 watch is the geekiest of the collection, featuring a 300dpi black and white screen which can display scenes from the Star Wars films. But if you’re in the market for a more timeless design, you might want to check out one of the other watch designs, which include Darth Vader, Darth Maul and Stormtrooper models with a dramatic black band, as well as a gold-accented C-3PO and green-tinged Yoda watch. The Vader model is even embellished with tiny diamonds.

All of these beautiful watches are limited-editions ranging from 500 to 1500 pieces, and are not for those with limited budgets. Prices for the series range from 136,500 to 141,750 (~$1739 to $1805 USD), though you can find them for a little less over on Amazon Japan(JP). I found one of the R2-D2 watches going for $1450 over on eBay too.

Sharp photocopier makes short work of bacteria with Plasma-cluster Ion technology

Some of us might be familiar with Sharp’s Plasma-cluster Ion technology which can be found in their range of refrigerators, humidifiers, and washing machines amongst others, which is touted to turn the air around that particular piece of consumer electronics sterile, which results in nasty bacteria dying so that one has cleaner and purer air to breathe. Good thing this patented technology has now arrived on their new range of office photocopiers which will sport a rather hefty Plasma-cluster ion emitting unit that is affixed to the top.

According to Sharp, their marketing pitch goes something like this, “Because the workplace is where people spend so much of their time, we want to devote our energy to improving the quality of their air they breathe.” Hmmm, I am not quite sure how many folks got sick hanging around the photocopier machine while carrying out a conversation, but you can never be too paranoid, can you? After all, if it kills the T-Virus, I’m all up for a photocopier like this.

US Army tests female body armor in Afghanistan

Sometime in July earlier this year, we ran a story on how the US Army was working on a new body armor that was specially developed to fit the female body, which is definitely a good idea since the male and female physiological make-up are different in their own unique ways. Having said that, female soldiers from Fort Campbell who are deploying to Afghanistan will have the honor of field testing the first Army body armor which was specially tailored to fit women’s physiques, being shorter in nature.

The latest generation of female-centric Army tactical vests is shorter in length so that it can accommodate smaller torsos, while being tailored to fit closer to women’s chests. It will also do away with the gaps between the material and the body, where it can be fitted with smaller side ballistic inserts for small waist sizes. Not only that, it feels lighter since it will not rest on the female soldier’s shoulders, unlike the male counterpart. In fact, one is able to perform a cartwheel in this without having the body armor fall right off, which is something that could happen if a female were to wear the old armor.

Raspberry Pi squeezes 50% performance boost with turbo mode

Raspberry Pi has added a “turbo mode”, squeezing 50-percent more performance out of its fruity mini computer  without dinging your warranty in the process. Reminiscent of the old “Turbo” button on 90s PC cases, the green-light tweak can in fact be set to one of five different overclock presets, boosting the ARM processor to as high as 1GHz.

According to Raspberry Pi, overclocking was supported by the hardware at least from the outset, and was a simple matter of editing the config.txt file. However, the team was unsure whether it could have a negative impact on chipset life, and so decided to make it a warranty-buster.

After some more testing, however, and some clever automatic scaling which only allows turbo mode to function when the system is busy and, essentially, when temperature levels are sub-85-degrees centigrade, the official overclock has been produced. Raspberry Pi suggests testing with Quake 3 – something we know the $25 board is very capable of doing – to test out system stability.

Other system tweaks include WiFi support out of the box – though you’ll need to provide a USB WiFi adapter yourself – along with improved analog audio and better USB performance. New boards will come with the turbo mode option enabled; existing owners can upgrade with instructions here.

iPhone 5 shipping date delayed to 3-4 weeks

Less than a week ago, we reported that the iPhone 5’s pre-order shipping times had slipped to 1-2 weeks, no doubt due to the fact that the iPhone 5’s pre-order of 2 million units were sold out in record time. Well, it seems that those of you who placed a pre-order for your iPhone 5 recently might be disappointed to know that shipping times had been further pushed back to 3-4 weeks, meaning you will still be able to enjoy some iOS 6 goodness on-the-go right before Halloween. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? Well, at least those folks who are lining up for the new iPhone 5 at least four days before the official release at the Apple Store in New York City might not have lost their marbles after all. Do you mind waiting for an additional two more weeks for your iPhone 5?

GE launches eye-pleasing WattStation Wall EV charger in Europe

GE launches eye-pleasing WattStation Wall EV charger in Europe

Every EV needs juice, but GE likes to dispense it in style, and it’s sticking to that mantra with its new, wall-mounted version of the WattStation. The weather-resistant charging point has been launched in Europe, and is available for your home or business in a buffet of custom colors. The WattStation Wall plays nicely with type 1 / 2 plugs and type 2 / 3 sockets under the supervision of GE’s smartphone app for monitoring usage and remote charging. A networked version is also due in early 2013 for businesses that want greater control and billing options through the WattStation Connect platform. The PR mentions it supports connections common to Europe, USA and Japan, so we assume it’ll also be sticking to walls outside the Continent before too long. If you’re not sold on the design, maybe the saving on garage floor space will persuade you — unless you’re set on a Hiriko, of course.

LG Optimus G more details – preview with videos

Yesterday, I was at the LG Optimus G launch event in Seoul and I could briefly play with a unit and post a hands -on. This morning, the LG flagship smartphone was launched in the US at a press conference in New-York.

I finally got the time to shoot additional photos of the Optimus G white version, which is the model I prefer.  So far, I am really impressed by the unit I played with, the unibody design is sleek and elegant, with a great build quality that encloses powerful performance.

LG is pushing hard its software differentiation by emphasizing its “unique user experience”, which is supported by a set of custom user interface features. Some people are not really fan of Google mobile OS customization since it  increases the fragmentation of the Android ecosystem, however, I found LG innovations very interesting, pleasing to the eyes and practical.

See the demo video above, another one is available in the full post with a detailed explanation. More information about the Optimus G in the full post.
