ZTE has plans for Mozilla phone launch in early 2013

We did see a quad-core powered ZTE Grand Era U985 smartphone late yesterday evening, but that smartphone does seem to be headed only for China. The thing is, ZTE seems to be pursuing after a larger market share in the smartphone industry, with word that there are solid plans to roll out a Mozilla phone sometime early next year, at least according to the Wall Street Journal and Reuters.

The Wall Street Journal claims that ZTE is in cahoots with Mozilla so that they will be able to better diversify their product range and not rely too much on Android and Windows Phone as their mobile operating system crutches. Apparently, ZTE is in partnership with “a regional telecom carrier outside of China”, which is not too surprising considering how Mozilla did announce their fair share of tie-ins with Telefonica and Sprint when you roll the clock back.

The Mozilla phone OS will most probably run an HTML-based platform, although it should not compromise on performance in order to keep up with the rest of the mobile operating system pack. What do you think a Mozilla-powered smartphone should pack?

US Cellular will get Samsung Galaxy Note II in late October, will cost $300

US Cellular will get Samsung Galaxy Note II in late October, will cost $300

We already knew that US Cellular would be getting its hands on the Galaxy Note II alongside the four national players in the US, but the company just came out with specific pricing and general availability. The device will go for $300 (after $100 mail-in rebate and two-year commitment) and should be available in late October, though the carrier will open up its site for pre-orders starting today. If you’re considering just waiting it out until they’re in stores, pre-ordering the Note II comes with a perk: you won’t have to bother with the mail-in rebate. USCC only appears to be offering the 16GB titanium gray option, but we’ll still certainly take that over nothing at all. Check out the press release below.

Update: We just heard back from US Cellular that the full retail cost of the Note II will be $800.

Dice Holdings buys Slashdot, Freecode and SourceForge for $20 million

Dice Holdings buys Slashdot and SourceForge

Dice Holdings, the unimaginatively named owner of technology jobs site Dice.com has purchased Geeknet’s media business for a cool $20 million. The deal hands over control of the world-famous Slashdot, Freecode and SourceForge to the careers company, commencing the careers site’s push into tech content. It leaves Geeknet with one remaining property, ThinkGeek, which will now be getting all of that company’s attention — hopefully to produce products that are even more lust inducing than Cave Johnson’s portrait.

YouTube Free for Nokia Belle devices

If you are still rocking to one of those old school Belle-powered devices from Nokia, then you might be interested to hear that a YouTube Free app has been hanging around for your Nokia Belle smartphone. This particular YouTube app will enable you to sign in to your account, while you can still keep a keen eye out for any of the videos that you previously uploaded to YouTube. One thing though, whatever video you have captured on your Nokia Belle smartphone cannot be uploaded from this app itself.

Searching is easy as pie, all you need to do is select the empty search box located at the top, type in what you have in mind, and you’re good to go. Best to have a decent Wi-Fi connection go with this though. Apart from that, you are able to use the browse videos, favourites, subscriptions or playlist button to watch content to boot. To put it in a nutshell, this YouTube app is perfect for those who are just searching for videos and want to watch them. Which is your favorite YouTube viewing app on your Belle device?

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 arrives at AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 phablet was announced at the end of last month, and today, we have word on its official availability to at least five different carriers in the US; namely AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular by the time mid-November rolls around. If you are interested in pricing details, be prepared to be disappointed as that depends on the carrier whom you are going to hook up with, while retail availability will also be announced by the carriers themselves.

Since the Galaxy Note 2 is optimized to run on a 4G LTE network (as well as HSPA+ 42 networks), you can be sure that carriers that support 4G LTE will definitely want to have this under their fold to attract more customers. Just how much are you willing to pay for the Galaxy Note 2, or do you feel that your original Galaxy Note is good enough to last you for at least another year? It does seem, however, that the Galaxy Note 2 for Verizon will come with a locked bootloader.

We received word from US Cellular that they will be carrying the 16GB Titanium Gray model for $299.99, where it will come with an instant rebate if you place a pre-order, waiting for it to roll out in stores at the end of October, which is slightly earlier than the above mentioned general November release. Sprint will offer it in Marble White and Titanium Gray though. [Press Release]

PS3 Slim Version 2 Price, Release Date and Specs Revealed

Typically, when a game console is nearing the end of its life, prices start to go down. It isn’t working out that way with a new PS3 that was unveiled this week at the Tokyo Game Show. The new version of the PS3 has a different design and is slimmer overall, but the cheapest of the new models will retail for $20 more than the current low-end model.

In the US, the new slimmed-down PS3 with 250 GB hard drive will sell for $270 (USD), while a version of the console with a 500 GB hard drive will cost $300. However, in Japan, prices are expected to remain the same as the current models. That said, the updated console does now include a bundled copy of Uncharted 3: Game of the Year Edition, and the base model’s hard drive is bigger than the current $250 model.

Sony says that the new console is 50% lighter and smaller than the original PS3 that landed in 2006. It also states that it’s about 25% smaller than the “slim” version unveiled in 2009. The 250GB version hits stores on September 25, while the 500 GB version of the console will go on sale on October 30 and will be available in Charcoal Black or Classic White, which is kind of an odd name, since there’s nothing classic about a white PS3.

Yahoo starts selling half of its Alibaba stake as promised, sends $3.65 billion to giddy shareholders

Defunct Yahoo billboard

Anyone who’s been holding on to Yahoo shares through thick and thin is about to reap the rewards of that patience. As the company promised, it’s starting to sell back half its stake in Alibaba, closing the first stage of the deal with the equivalent of $7.6 billion in pure revenue. The struggling search and content firm ‘only’ pockets a net $4.3 billion after taxes and other overhead costs, but it won’t even see that much in its bank account: it’s purposefully sending $3.65 billion of that money to shareholders, both to inspire new confidence and (unofficially) to head off activist investors like Dan Loeb that might otherwise want a coup d’état. If share owners plan on using the second stage of the sale to fund a vacation to Maui, though, they’ll need to wait. Yahoo’s deal prevents it from selling half of its remaining 23 percent stake unless Alibaba files for an initial public offering, and there’s no guarantee that investors will see another dime of the proceeds.
