Sony announces PlayStation Store for PlayStation Mobile

If you own a PlayStation-certified Sony Xperia Android handset, it looks like your wallets might be on the verge of getting lighter. Sony has officially announced that come 3rd of October, they will be launching the PlayStation Store for PlayStation Mobile. Basically this will give users with PlayStation-certified devices access to the store where they will be able to purchase PlayStation Mobile games. Not everyone will be getting access to the store at launch and only countries such as the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Australia will be the lucky few.

We expect more countries to be added to the list at a later date, but for those living in the countries listed above, you will have 30 games to choose from to download, with more hopefully being added in the future. Interestingly for those living in Japan where Fujitsu and Sharp smartphones are abundant, Sony has also revealed that selected Fujitsu and Sharp smartphones will also be granted PlayStation certification so you guys will also be able to access the PlayStation Store without having to own a Sony device.

Apple: No plans for an iPhone 5 dock

We’re not sure how many of you guys actually use docks with your iPhone when charging, or you just lie them flat on the table, but for those who do use docks and you’re wondering if Apple might be making one themselves for the iPhone 5, well you might be disappointed. In an email apparently sent by Phil Schiller, Apple’s SVP of Marketing, he stated that there were no plans to introduce a dock for the iPhone 5. Apparently people who want to dock their iPhones already do so via third-party devices like speaker docks or clock systems. In any case we expect that this void will be filled by third-party manufacturers, but for those who are pretty particular about getting officially-made accessories, it looks like you’re out of luck. In any case for those who pre-ordered early, the iPhone 5 should be making its way to your homes in no time, so we guess it’s time to start accessory shopping!

Schneider Kreuznach unveils B+W Smart-Pro polarizing filter for the iPhone

While Apple’s iPhone has no problems taking pretty good photographs, we’re sure that photographers out there would like to get as much out of the camera as possible, probably in the hopes that it will be good enough to remove the need for them to bring compact cameras while on the go. While that will depend from photographer to photographer, here’s a little accessory that you might be interested in checking out which should help with the overall quality of your images. Schneider Kreuznach has announced at Photokina 2012 the B+W Smart-Pro which is basically a polarizer for the iPhone’s camera.

This filter is small enough to fit on top of the iPhone’s camera lens and is clicked into place via a magnet, allowing for quick and easy readjusting. Unfortunately based on the demo video, it seems that the lens might be too big and does block the flash on the iPhone when attached, so perhaps using it in conjunction with flash might not be possible. Either that or you will have to adjust it in such a way that it won’t block the flash unit. The B+W Smart-Pro is expected to provide photographers with eliminated reflections, saturated and intense colors along with a better contrast ratio. No word on pricing but it is expected to be available come winter 2012. [Product page (German)]

Acer offers up European pricing for Iconia Tab A110

We’ve spent some hands-on time with slick Acer Iconia Tab A110 earlier this summer. This is the seven-inch tablet from Acer running Android and using an Nvidia Tegra 3 1.2 GHz quad-core processor. The tablet has a screen resolution of 1024 x 600 and 1 GB of RAM.

Integrated storage is 8 GB, and it has a microSD card slot for storage expansion. The specific flavor of Android on the tablet we fondled was Android 4.0. We didn’t know a few important details about the A110 when we got to hold it back in June. Little details like the launch date and pricing weren’t offered.

Acer has now announced that the A110 will sell for £179.99 in Europe. Acer isn’t giving us an exact launch date, but says the tablet will be coming this autumn. Interestingly, the tablet has also been upgraded to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean rather than Android 4.0 that it was running when we spent hands-on time with the tablet a few months ago.

Acer says that the tablet will make it easy to access your favorite apps and will feature resizable widgets that automatically resize to the space available on the screen. The tablet will be preloaded with a full set of Google Mobile Service apps including Gmail, maps, YouTube, and more. The tablet has a two megapixel front facing camera for video chatting and has integrated HDMI output along with a micro USB port.

How the iPhone 5 got its ‘insanely great’ A6 processor

How the iPhone 5 got its 'insanely great' A6 processor It’s hard not to be impressed by the A6 engine in the new iPhone 5, since it’s now proven to deliver a double-shot of great performance and class-leading battery life. But silicon stories like that don’t happen over night or even over the course of a year — in fact, analyst Linley Gwennap has traced the origins of the A6 all the way back to 2008, when Steve Jobs purchased processor design company P.A. Semi and set one of its teams to work on creating something “insanely great” for mobile devices.

Although Apple is steadfastly secretive about its components, Gwennap’s history of the A6 (linked below) is both plausible and a straight-up good read for anyone interested in the more fundamental aspects of their gadgets. Whereas the A5 processor stuck closely to ARM’s Cortex-A9 design, Gwennap is convinced — just like Anandtech is –that the A6 treads a very different path: it’s still based on ARM’s architecture and it’s likely fabricated by Samsung using a cutting-edge 32nm process, but it’s an in-house vision of what a mobile chip should be. It’s the culmination of four years of hard work and perhaps half a billion dollars of investment.

That’s not to say it’s the most powerful chip out there, or even the chip most tailored to its host device — after all, Samsung also designs great chips for some of its own smartphones. Indeed, Gwennap says that the A6 is probably a dual-core processor that is no more complex than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 (let alone the S4 Pro) or the forthcoming generation of Cortex-A15 chips, while its clock speed could be as low as 1.2GHz — versus a 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos in the Note II and even a 2GHz Intel chip in Motorola’s new RAZR i. However, Gwennap predicted that even if the A6 falls short of its rivals “in raw CPU performance,” it’d make up for it in terms of low power consumption — which is precisely what we’ve confirmed in our review.

Apple’s Design Team Turns Up to Collect Award for First Time Ever [Apple]

It’s no surprise to hear that Apple continually wins design awards around the world. Until now they’ve usually gone uncollected, but last night Jony Ive shipped out his entire senior design team to London to pick up two gongs—and perhaps signal that his influence is more important than ever. Wi-Fi Alliance Simplifies Streaming With Miracast-Certification — Just Don’t Expect Apple To Play

WI-FI ALLIANCE LOGO

The Wi-Fi Alliance has launched a device certification program for the new Miracast wireless streaming standard which aims to simplify video and audio sharing between devices made by different manufacturers.

The proliferation of connected screens — smartphones, tablet,  laptops, TVs, projectors and so on — means there’s no shortage of opportunities for sharing digital content from one bit of hardware to another. But with no single, agreed streaming standard, sharing hasn’t always been as easy as it could be. Miracast aims to reduce the complexity by badging those devices that will stream with each other and also simplifying discoverability and set-up.

Here’s the blurb from the Wi-Fi Alliance’s original release about Miracast:

Miracast devices make use of a Wi-Fi connection to deliver audio and video content from one device to another, without cables or a connection to an existing Wi-Fi network. These devices connect directly, so you can do things like watch videos from a smartphone on a big screen television or share a laptop screen with the conference room projector to collaborate in real-time. Televisions, set-top boxes, notebooks, handsets and tablets are among the device types which will be certified.

The Wi-Fi Alliance has now opened up the Miracast certification program so device makers can apply to have their kit approved.

“Wi-Fi users around the world want to experience multimedia on the device of their choice — no matter what brand — and Miracast is the breakthrough they have been waiting for,” said Edgar Figueroa, CEO of Wi-Fi Alliance, in a statement announcing the launch. ”We have been delighted with the level of enthusiasm and support among our member companies for this new offering.”

The Miracast certified device standard is based on the Wi-Fi Alliance Display Specification — and builds on another streaming technology, Wi-Fi Direct, by adding “mechanisms to negotiate video capabilities, setup content protection (if needed), stream content, and maintain the video session”.

“Miracast builds on Wi-Fi Direct with a compelling application,” noted Brian O’Rourke from IHS iSuppli Research in a supporting statement. “This is a big step forward in a market migration from single-vendor display solutions, into an offering from a wide array of vendors.”

The first consumer products to include Miracast certification since the testing program opened up include the LG Optimus G smartphone, Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone and Samsung Echo-P Series TV. The number of Miracast-certified devices are expected to exceed 1.5 billion in 2016.

Several big name consumer electronics and chip companies have welcomed the Miracast launch — including Intel, LG, Marvell, Nvidia, Samsung and Sony. But Apple’s name is of course absent from the supporting comments (see below).

Apple already has its own wireless streaming system — AirPlay — which allows content to be streamed between iOS devices and connected TVs via Apple TV. It also licenses the audio streaming component of AirPlay to accessories makers for iPod/iPhone speakers and the like. So it’s a very safe bet to say Cupertino won’t be stepping outside its walled garden to sign up for Miracast interoperability any time soon.

“As a Wi-Fi market leader, Broadcom is honored to be one of the primary certification solutions for the Wi-Fi Alliance Miracast™ program and is committed to driving new Wi-Fi standards,” said Dino Bekis, Senior Director, Wireless Connectivity Combo Group at Broadcom. “The standardization of this technology will enable consumers to easily and seamlessly share content across the ever-growing landscape of connected devices.”

“Users clearly expect that they should be able to move their content and applications freely at home, at work, in the classroom, and on the go,” said Joe Van De Water, Director of Consumer Product Marketing at Intel. ”Intel has seen tremendous user enthusiasm for Intel® WiDi, and as a member of the Wi-Fi Alliance, we support enabling this usage more broadly and are excited to announce WiDi as one of the first Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast solutions.”

“We celebrate the launch of the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast program,” said Hyunghoon Oh, Head of LG Mobile Communication R&D Division. “Miracast brings an exciting advancement in the way devices deliver display applications.”

“The Wi-Fi Alliance’s Miracast certification program will allow for easy sharing of video content, regardless of vendor,” said Bart Giordano, Director, Wireless Marketing at Marvell Semiconductor, Inc. ”We have included Miracast in our solutions, and are honored to have been selected for the program’s test bed.”

“The video streaming applications enabled by Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast™ are key to the growth of the Wi-Fi ecosystem encompassing Consumer Electronics, Personal Computing, and Mobile devices,” said Mr. SR Tsai, General Manager of Wireless Connectivity & Networking Business Unit at MediaTek. “We are honored to have our Android mobile platforms, Digital TV, as well as our connectivity solutions for Windows platforms selected for the Miracast test bed.”

“Miracast on NVIDIA Tegra will bridge the distance between mobile devices and high-def TVs, providing customers a rich – and cable-free – multimedia experience,” said Matt Wuebbling, Director of Product Marketing at NVIDIA. “We have embraced Miracast and are working with our OEM partners to bring its amazing possibilities to market.”

“We are happy to have been involved in developing the Miracast program and to be one of the first companies to receive certification,” said Jessy Chen, Vice President and Spokesman at Realtek. “The solution will greatly expand the market for easy-to-use interoperable wireless display connectivity.”

“As a leader in N-screen technology, Samsung has introduced AllShare Cast (based on Miracast), which is incorporated into most of Samsung’s high-end smart mobile devices including the GALAXY S III, GALAXY Note 10.1, and GALAXY Note II, ” said Hankil Yoon, Senior Vice President of Product Strategy Team, Samsung’s Mobile Communication Business. “We will continue to support the program, and plan to offer more Miracast-certified devices to our customers going forward.”

“Sony Mobile is pleased to support the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast™ certification program. We continuously strive to deliver new exciting user experiences and Miracast™ technology will enhance our ability to offer consumers seamless connectivity to move their content freely between smartphones and other screens,” says Nikolaus Scheurer, Director Marketing Planning for Sony Mobile Communications.

“Miracast will play an important role in enabling true seamless media streaming, gaming and content sharing between mobile screens and large displays,” said Ram Machness, director of marketing, Wireless Connectivity Solutions, Texas Instruments Incorporated. “Our OMAP™ platform, DaVinci™ video processors and WiLink™ connectivity products will offer Miracast-certified source and sink solutions to provide a rich experience for our customers’ end products.”

PlayStation Store for PlayStation Mobile to launch October 3

Back in August, Sony started talking up PlayStation Mobile at Gamescon. PlayStation Mobile is Sony’s initiative aiming at making Android devices able to play PlayStation style games. Originally, only Sony branded smartphones and tablets were to be offered access to PlayStation Mobile. Sony later started accepting third-party devices from Asus and others.

Sony announced this week that it would start delivering content for PlayStation Mobile through the PlayStation Store on October 3. Sony promises that the launch of the service will see PlayStation-like content delivered on a variety of mobile devices that are popular today. The service will launch in nine different countries.

Launch countries include Japan, the United States, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Australia. Sony says that more countries will follow and at launch, users will be able to enjoy 30 new titles in a variety of gaming genres. Games will be offered in adventure, action, puzzle, sports, and simulation genres.

Sony says that the games will sell for between 50 and 850 yen in Japan. Games will be available that were created by Sony and from third-party developers and publishers. Sony will continue to expand the available library of games on PlayStation Mobile as new titles become available. Sony also intends to accelerate the expansion of PlayStation Certified devices so more smartphones and tablets will be able to access the games.

ZTE to launch Mozilla-based smartphones early next year

ZTE to launch Mozillabased smartphones early next year

ZTE just can’t get enough mobile OS’s. The manufacturer is all over Android, it’s got Windows Phone 8 coming out of leaky pores, and now it’s revealed plans to launch phones based on the Firefox OS (formerly “Boot to Gecko“) as early as the the first quarter of next year. That’s not so surprising, perhaps, given that Mozilla already told us it was working with ZTE to bring its HTML-5 powered platform to life, but it further emphasizes the fact that Chinese smartphone giants are casting about for a viable alternative to Google.
