New iPad Mini Images Surface Online

A number of purported iPad mini leaked images have made it to the web so far. Earlier this month, just ahead of iPhone 5′s launch event, we reported about the iPad mini images published by the French site NowhereElse. And now, yet more images of the much-hyped tablet have hit the web.

So far, Apple hasn’t even affirmed the existence of an iPad mini. Thus, we’re not even sure if it is arriving. But with iPhone 5, we saw that Apple couldn’t guard its secrets like it did in the past and much of the details of the new iPhone leaked on to the web well before its arrival. Can the same be the case with Apple’s iPad mini? A Chinese website, Bolopad, has now released new images of the purported tablet. (more…)

Amphones Help You Shred In Silence If Your Neighbors Are Jerks [Audio]

“If it’s too loud,” the saying goes, “the neighbors are going to call the cops and screw up your late-night shred session.” In an attempt to solve this eternal conundrum, the guitar amplification specialists at Vox have teamed up with the headphone geniuses Audio Technica to create Amphones. Yes, guitar amplifier headphones. It’s a preposterous idea that’s just crazy enough to work. More »

ZTE Windows Phone 7.8 and Windows Phone 8 range teased

There is nothing quite like a little bit of fake bokeh in an image to whet your voracious appetite when it comes to rumors of a gadget that you are certainly looking forward to. ZTE’s marketing strategy manager, Dennis Lui, went ahead to post on his personal Sina Weibo account a photo that depicts a trio of upcoming ZTE Windows Phone devices, where the right hand most device does seem to resemble the regular ZTE Tania albeit with what resembles Windows Phone 8 in tow, not to mention the display itself being more or less depicting a “WP8 simulator” app that is available for smartphones running on the Windows Phone 7 platform.

As for the other two devices which remain obscured thanks to enough blur, what we see on the left might actually be the real deal that runs on Windows Phone 7 itself due to the shrunken live tiles, which is a hint that ZTE could very well be one of the first few manufacturers to take the plunge into the new mobile operating system version.

Fox kicks off its Digital HD initiative by joining Google Play and YouTube, offering movies early

Google Play and YouTube add Fox movies and TV shows, use Prometheus as a lure

Fox embraced a radical thought when it outlined its Digital HD initiative earlier this month: customers are more likely to buy digital movies if the content isn’t artificially delayed and priced to match the releases on conventional discs. The studio is about to see if that gamble on common sense pays off. As of today, you’ll find 600-plus Fox movies ready to buy or rent in HD across every major digital video store in the US, with many downloads cleared to arrive ahead of their physical counterparts at lower prices that reflect a disc-free reality. The media giant has also decided to play nicely with Google after a longstanding absence, putting its movies and TV shows on Google Play Movies and YouTube. Its tentpole movie release Prometheus is unsurprisingly being used as the prime incentive to try Digital HD; the title is available online three weeks before the Blu-ray launch at a more reasonable $15 price. The sci-fi thriller is even Fox’s first movie destined for UltraViolet cloud lockers. Only Americans will have expanded access to movies and TV at first, but it shouldn’t be too long before many countries can be creeped out by Michael Fassbender’s android — including on their Android devices.

Nook Simple Touch runs a Sega Genesis emulator

“Sega does what Nintendon’t” was one of the catchier marketing phrases that I saw in the 1990s as a kid when the home console wars were slugged out between Nintendo and Sega. Well, Nintendo is still churning out modern day consoles even now, but Sega has sadly dropped out of the game (pun not intended) with the Sega Dreamcast being their final hurrah. Still, there are still pockets of Sega fanboys around, and someone managed to successfully port a Sega Genesis emulator over to the Nook Simple Touch e-reader that runs on the Android operating system.

Check out the video above from YouTube user ndncnbvcuyuys (no, that is no some random finger tapping on the keyboard) that shows off a rooted Nook Simple Touch that has the Sega Genesis emulator up and running, where Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the game being played. It does seem as though the Nook Simple Touch has enough processing muscle to handle this 16-bit classic. No idea on whether audio is supported or not, but I sure hope that Mortal Kombat makes its way to the Nook Simple Touch, in black and white gory glory! This is not the first hack with the Nook Simple Touch, and it definitely won’t be the last!

You Don’t Need an Engineering Degree To Transform This Sofa Bed [Furniture]

Your typical pull-out sofabed is a marvel of modern engineering, but with all those interconnected parts and a mattress that’s designed to fold away, they’re not exactly the epitome of comfort. At least not compared to Guido Rosati’s brilliantly simple Scoop sofabed which simply opens and closes like a giant pair of scissors. More »

Six million Virgin Mobile user accounts at risk, says developer

If you are a company will millions of users, it is usually expected that you would ensure fool-proof security of your user’s accounts. A developer has now claimed that Virgin Mobile USA entirely fails on this front, citing a very basic security vulnerability in the company’s website.

Kevin Burke says that when he first came across the vulnerability, he contacted Virgin Mobile USA directly. However, after numerous to-and-fro communications, the company didn’t do anything to eliminate the vulnerability. It was then that Burke took to venting on his own blog. (more…)
