Panasonic Toughbook 53 upgraded

I am quite the klutz, where toys that have been working just fine all these years, when handed down to me, would apparently arrive at the end of their lives without me having to make an effort. I am not quite sure just what this is the case, perhaps it is some sort of subconscious thing, or has my family been secretly plotting to have me believe that I am a true blue klutz? Having said that, I have yet to drop a mobile phone into the toilet bowl all these years, and I do not intend to start. I did crack a screen on my smartphone before, but that was a one-off experience that I shall not venture into. Having said that when it comes to computers, one too, might want to be more careful, especially since notebooks are not the cheapest things in town that you can purchase a replacement when you break yours. Panasonic has racked up quite a reputation for itself in terms of rugged notebooks, and today, we hear of them upgrading the Panasonic Toughbook 53.

The semi-rugged Toughbook 53 notebook has proven itself to be a reliable and versatile servant over the years to many people in demanding industries such as the insurance market, those who deal with construction sites, as well as battle hardened folks in the military. The updated Toughbook 53 will be the latest model that will be made available with an Intel Core i5-3320M vPro processor (3MB cache, up to 3.3 GHz) with Intel Turbo Boost Technology, where some of the other enhancements will include expanded storage and improved connectivity options.

Other hardware features of the Toughbook 53 include a spill-resistant keyboard, and this particular puppy has been certified by an independent third party to pass nine MIL-STD-810G tests, ranging from surviving 3 foot drops on 26 faces. Having said that, the high-definition, 14” LED display still went strong without a crack, and you can also opt to splash more cash to enjoy viewing the optional 2-850 nit sunlight-viewable Panasonic CircuLumin touchscreen display coupled with an adjustable backlit emissive keyboard so that you can work even if there is no light or the environment is just way too bright for normal notebooks.

The Toughbook 53 will also come with a range of embedded wireless technologies, including Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and optional 4G LTE or 3G Gobi mobile broadband so that you need not worry about being disconnected no matter which part of the world you are in.

Depending on the hardware configuration of the Panasonic Toughbook 53, prices start from $1,399 upwards and it comes with a standard three-year limited warranty.

Maserati and B&W mark in-car audio deal with “Seven Notes” engine music

Maserati and high-end speaker manufacturer Bowers & Wilkins have announced a deal to fit top-spec audio equipment in the Italian marque’s cars, and they’ve celebrated the news with a bizarre new piece of music. The collaboration will see a new audio system developed especially for Maserati cars, hitting options lists sometime in 2013, as well as a range of home audio kit bearing the Maserati brand.

Technical details are sparse, though B&W isn’t a stranger to in-car audio. The company already supplies Jaguar with multiple systems, with the setup in the XJ consisting of a full twenty speakers paired with a fifteen-channel amp.

For Maserati’s purposes, the B&W installation will have to compete with the car firm’s hardly quiet engines, known for producing some impressive noise of their own. That challenge seemingly inspired a one-off piece of music, “Seven Notes,” based on the seven notes apparently produced by Maserati’s powerplant.

“Seven Notes”:

Cue a trip to the Abbey Road studios, plenty of microphones, and some mixing expertise from Howie B, and you come up with the track in the video above. More details on how B&W and Maserati made it in the making-of video below.

Distro Issue 59: Boston’s DBC City Bike is putting a new spin on an old design

Distro Issue 59 DBC City Bike is putting a new spin on an old design

As the summer comes to a close (as least north of the equator), temperatures are dropping and the leaves are beginning to change their hues. Leisurely strolls and bike rides that had become quite uncomfortable are options for relaxation once again. Speaking of bicycles, that’s precisely where the cover story of this week’s edition of our tablet mag focuses. Terrence O’Brien visits with Dan Sorger at his DBC City Bike workshop in Boston and discovers how — with the help of designers, engineers, and medical professionals from institutions like MIT — The Swift takes a beloved European-style bike and adapts it for American city dwellers. This week’s “Hands-on” section circles the globe as we check in at the Tokyo Game Show and Nokia’s HQ before returning in the States. On the review front, we put Sony’s Xperia T and Xperia Tab as well as Vizio’s all-in-one through their respective paces and offer our detailed impressions of each. Find yourself a spot on the porch and settle in before grabbing the latest issue via any of the options that lie down below.

Sharp says they’re making plenty of iPhone 5 displays

After reports that Sharp was said to be behind in the manufacturer of iPhone 5 screens, Reuters is reporting that the company is in fact keeping up with demand. Sharp was blamed for the shortage of iPhone 5 units during launch when the estimated shipping date was moved back to almost a month in a matter of just a few of days.

Reports said that Sharp was falling behind three weeks before the iPhone 5′s launch, struggling to improve low production yields. It turns out, the iPhone 5′s 4-inch IPS display is extremely difficult to produce at high yields, which raised the question of whether or not Apple would give more money to the screen manufacturer in return for faster production.

However, it turns out that Apple doesn’t rely on Sharp alone to produce screens for their iPhones. They also buy screen units from Japan Display and LG, which reports say that most iPhone 5 units that were sold on launch weekend were using either Japan or LG displays. Sharp and Japan Display do not publicly admit that Apple is one of their clients, but Apple has said in the past that it relies on both manufacturers to produce iPhone screens.

The iPhone 5 sold more than 5 million units on launch weekend, which outpaces the 4 million units of the iPhone 4S’s opening weekend last year. On the fourth day of the iPhone 5′s existence, Apple said it ran out of its initial supply and a number of orders were pushed back into October. Reuters also reported that Japan Display was capable of producing 8 million iPhone displays per month, while Sharp was estimated to be able to produce 6 million per month.

The New Lytro Camera – Focus After the Fact!

Photographs are an important part of my life. I admit I’m the one that has a camera everywhere I go, no, I don’t drag my giant Nikon with me to every walk in the park, but I almost always have at least a point and shoot camera in my pocket… you just never know when that magical shot will reveal itself, if you love pictures, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Check out the new Lytro camera, and although it gives a fun and almost toy-like appearance, it is everything but. Touting the ability to focus “after the fact,” this camera actually captures all planes of light in a given picture, this allows you to take a truly instantaneous shot, without waiting for focus or for shutter delay. In other words, you get the shot exactly when you wanted it and you can play with the focus later.

Okay, so field of light photography isn’t actually new, but having this kind of ability in a tiny hand held camera is, and being able to share these photos with family and friends, and let them get in on the action and play with all your interactive photo features also makes for a novel photo experience. I don’t believe this is the only camera you’ll want to own, but if you already have a camera, this one certainly provides a fun alternative.

The Lytro Camera comes in either 16G ($499.00) or 8G ($399.00), with an 8X optical zoom, it includes the desktop application needed to process and interact with your cool HD quality “living pictures.” I have to say I did not find any mention of megapixels, so I can’t comment on print quality, but I can say, it sounds like an interesting gadget for the shutterbugs among us. Find more information, or interact with some fabulous photos at lytro.com. The Lytro Field of Light Camera will be available in October.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Apologizes for Apple Maps, Suggests You Download… Bing [Apple Maps]

Apple Maps is a mess, to the point that now Apple CEO Tim Cook has now issued a public apology for it. And—in a very un-Apple fashion—has directed iPhone users to alternatives like Bing, Waze, and, well, Google. More »

I used to be scared when I turned the lights off, but now I think I would be even more scared with the lights on. With the lights on, you can see all of the horrible details on these handmade switch plates and you know they will get you. Of course, in the dark, you’d feel all that weirdness when you reach for the switch, too. These plates are made with polymer clay over a standard sized light switch cover and painted with acrylics, matte varnish and gloss varnish.

Tagg Pet Tracker ensures you know just how much activity your pet has been getting

I am a firm believer in Cesar Millan’s methods when interacting with dogs – you basically got to establish yourself as the alpha dog in the home, while the rest of your family members follow the pecking order with Fido (even though he might be one mean looking brute) right down there at the bottom. Right under the resident tortoise, even. Another thing is to make sure that your precious furkid gets an adequate amount of exercise each day, and how do you do that? Obviously bringing Fido out for walks in the mornings as well as evenings would be part of the routine, and you can also get some exercise along the way as well. Some breeds do require more exercise than others, and if you want everything to boil down to exact figures, then you might be interested in the Tagg Pet Tracker that will let you, the pet’s owner, know just where your pet is, as well as receiving a notification just in case it gets lost.

Not only that, it will be able to offer a new activity tracking feature that lets you have a greater, detailed breakdown on your furkid’s daily activity. Has it been lounging around at home, or burning enough calories chasing the postman? This new functionality will be available when October rolls around, where current Tagg users are able to take advantage of it without having to fork out a single cent, ensuring that the device will be enhanced with existing location tracking capabilities.

In addition, the new activity tracking feature will allow pet parents to indulge in this thing known as daily Tagg Points, where you can take advantage of at-a-glance snapshots of your pets’ activity in a 24-hour period. All movement will be detected by the Tagg tracker, and points are assigned based on the intensity and duration of the activity, where the scale ranges from resting to highly active.

Tagg Points can be accumulated and charted each day, so that you have conclusive data that would help you make more informed decisions about your pets’ exercise routines. So how about it? Ready to fork out $99.95 for a (theoretically) fitter Fido?
