Beats Pill Bluetooth speaker spotted at FCC and HMV: take one and call Dr. Dre in the morning

Beats Pill Bluetooth speaker spotted at FCC and HMV take one and call Dr Dre in the morning

The Beats by Dr. Dre badge has usually been attached to headphones and the occasional laptop or smartphone. We’ve never really seen it attached to dedicated speakers, however, and that’s where both an FCC filing and a sighting at UK retailer HMV’s online store raise a few eyebrows. The House that Dre Built appears on the edge of launching the Beats Pill, a Bluetooth wireless speaker with four drivers and a shape that more than explains the medicinal name. While we don’t know just how much of that signature Beats thump we’ll get, we do know from the FCC that the Pill can serve as a speakerphone, carries an aux-in jack and will last for a typical 8.5 hours on its USB-rechargeable lithium-ion battery. There’s also signs of a red version of Beats’ Mixr headphones coming at the same time. HMV has publicly scoured its pages of any trace of a ship date or price for the Pill, but cached copies point to a £170 ($276) price and a release around September 28th — not necessarily trustworthy figures, but they may be in the ballpark. Our only question is whether or not we’ll get a dose of the Pill in the US.

[Thanks, Germaine]

Jony Ive to design a Leica M camera that will be auctioned off for charity

We had a look at some of Leica’s new cameras, and if you thought that they weren’t sleek enough or “classic” enough, it seems that there will be one special design of the Leica M camera that will be produced. It will be designed by none other than Apple’s Jony Ive and this special edition Leica M will be put on auction. Only one unit will be made so we can only imagine just how much this camera will cost – as if the original wasn’t expensive enough already! We’re not sure how the Jony Ive-designed Leica M will look like, and we’re not sure how extensive his design will be. Are we looking at merely a superficial design with colors (like the Leica X2 Edition Paul Smith), or are we talking about a totally different body design from the original? Either way we can’t wait to see what Jony Ive will be able to cook up, so stay tuned for more updates! In the meantime what do you guys think of Jony Ive applying his design skills to cameras? After all the Harman Kardon SoundSticks II were designed by him, so perhaps we could be in for a treat here.

Windows Phone 8X aka HTC Accord spotted with Verizon LTE

What’s tipped to be one of HTC’s new Windows Phone 8 devices, the HTC Accord believed to launch as the “Windows Phone 8X,” has shown up in the wild. Expected to be officially revealed at a New York event tomorrow, the phone in the live photo sent by an anonymous phoneArena tipster also bears Verizon branding, and the source says it will also support the CDMA carrier’s LTE network.

Those earlier leaks also suggested some specifications we can expect, including a dualcore Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 4.3-inch display, and an 8-megapixel camera. Interestingly, the leaked specs also claimed that the 8X/Accord would be able to record 1080p Full HD video using both the front and rear cameras.

Other tidbits include Beats Audio, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, WiFi, GPS and NFC, while physical ports will consist of microUSB and a 3.5mm headphones socket. No microSD has been mentioned, however, which would mean the rumored 16GB of internal storage is all buyers are getting.

We’ll know more after HTC’s event tomorrow, when the company is expected to spill all the details on its new range. What we really want to know, however, is when the Windows Phone 8 smartphones will actually reach store shelves, but we may have to wait for Microsoft to officially launch the OS before manufacturers can step up with that news.

Leica V-Lux 4 superzoom hands-on (video)

Yep, one more Leica camera to tell you about from this year’s Photokina show floor. It’s the V-Lux 4 — a big new superzoom addition to the company’s line. Though its got a similar name to the V-Lux 40, the camera’s body is a good deal larger — closer in size and shape to a small DSLR, but still reasonably lightweight. As with the smaller model, the V-Lux 4 features an all black design, with a bright red Leica logo on the front — in this case, just next to the curving textured handle. Also on top is a pop-out flash that you trigger with a devoted button.

The V-Lux 4 is capable of continuous f2.8 zoom, accessible via two buttons — one on top and the other next to the lens. Also on the rear, you get two viewfinders — optical on top and a swiveling electronic three-inch display. The camera is available now in Europe for a pricey €699.

Netflix for iPhone update adds ‘continue watching’ bar, more titles to home screen (video)

Netflix for iPhone gets updated, lets you continue watching where you left off, adds more titles to home screen video

It’s not just the Android side of things that’s getting a little love from Netflix, the iPhone app just got a refresh too. The new design brings the mobile version much more inline with the tablet edition that got a revamp last December. The update brings with it the ability to resume watching shows, right from the top of the app view, along with the sliding rows of titles, and custom recommendations that you may be familiar with from other versions. The new interface gets the official walk-through in the video after the break, but as it’s available now, you might just want to fondle the source link directly.

Timey Wimey Jell-O in a Jar, There’s Always Room for Doctor Who

Everyone loves Jell-O. Heck, even the Doctor loves him some Jell-O, as well as fish fingers, custard, and Jammie Dodgers of course. This special Doctor Who Jell-O will give you a nice, wibbly wobbly snack for that Who marathon you are planning.
doctor who jell o jar
If you you want to make your own galaxy in a jar, made of Jell-O, you can find the recipe at Bakingdom. You see, it looks like a galaxy. In a jar.

The TARDIS as well as Doctor and companion figures are optional. You don’t need them to enjoy this treat, it just makes it taste even better when you have props. I wonder if the TARDIS would get stuck in a Jell-O universe or just keep going.

Talking Measuring Cup

Now here is a rather novel idea that might just make you wish that things in the kitchen are a bit more modernized and digital, something like those kitchens that you see in science fiction movies which depict a far off future. Everything would be computerized by then, there would be no need for human waiters and cooks, and robots would do a perfectly fine job in serving customers. While we are not quite there yet in terms of technology, how about something a little bit closer to home and yet has a whiff of an optimistic future – the $59.95 Talking Measuring Cup.

The Talking Measuring Cup will be able to verbally announce the volume of wet or dry ingredients, doing away for the need to make an estimate by eye. Whenever you set it in its base, the cup will be able to state just the right amount that has been poured inside, and if you were looking out for a sexy and deep male voice, you would be sorely disappointed since a clear female voice would perform the readings. For instance, 1 1/4 cups is spoken as “one and one-fourth cups”, and you are able to take advantage of the tare function by adding multiple ingredients without emptying the cup.

Sporting a three-cup capacity cup that is made out of unbreakable frosted plastic, it will be accompanied by a removable flip-up lid, and is microwave and dishwasher safe so that it is a snap to use and clean up afterwards. Powered by a couple of AAA batteries, the Talking Measuring Cup makes for the perfect Christmas present for any foodie who loves to cook.

Samsung: February 2013 Galaxy S4 rumors “not true”

Samsung has denied reports that the Galaxy S4 is set to launch in February 2013, describing the chatter of a 5-inch follow-up to the Galaxy S III as simply “not true.” Talk of a new flagship with an aggressive roll-out roadmap began earlier this week, with claims that Samsung execs themselves had confirmed the mid-Q1 2013 reveal in an attempt to keep the pressure up on the new iPhone 5. However, the Samsung Tomorrow Twitter account quickly moved to debunk the speculation.

The company didn’t give more than a few passing comments on the talk, but closed with the somewhat comical “why spread these rumors?” (translated). Even if the rumors were in fact true, however, we wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung had decided to try to close them down anyway; the promise of a new device in a few months time would be unlikely to help sales of the existing Galaxy S III.

Those sales have been particularly healthy, in fact, and Samsung would probably do anything it could to avoid deflating demand before it wanes of its own accord. The company sold 20m Galaxy S III units in the first 100 days of availability, smashing records previously set by the Galaxy S II.

According to the leaks, Samsung’s fourth-gen Galaxy S flagship is to use a 5-inch display and potentially a flexible Super AMOLED panel of Samsung Display’s own manufacture. However, production issues might scupper those intentions, the insiders warned. Samsung was also tipped to eschew Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets altogether, relying solely on its own Exynos processors.
