TARDIS Tent Looks Perfect for Stand-up Sleepers

While I love the idea of all the space inside of an actual TARDIS tent, this one exists only in the real world, providing a space measuring just 61″(H) x 35″ (W) x 35″ (D). Clearly, this is not a tent for lying down in, but it’s just right for pretend time and space travelers – as long as they’re under 5-feet-tall.

Underground Toys TARDIS tent doesn’t just look like the Doctor’s craft from the outside. Open up the inside, and you’ll find a large print of the intricate insides of the TARDIS too. Sure, it’s totally non-functional, and not practical for sleeping at all, but it’s still pretty cool if you’re into Doctor Who.

You can pre-order the TARDIS tent over at Big Bad Toy Store for $119 (USD), and it ships this October. And I suppose you could always lie it on its side if you want to sleep in it.

HTC May Fire Back At Rivals With A 5-Inch Smartphone (The “One X 5?”) Of Its Own

htc-one-x-5

Samsung and LG have already crossed the 5-inch smartphone screen barrier, and now it seems that HTC is planning to make a similar leap any day now. The folks at Engadget happened upon what appears to be an early press render of a hefty new HTC handheld — supposedly dubbed the HTC One X 5 because of its sizable screen — on Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo.

But what’s that you say? The device in question looks a little familiar?

That’s not entirely a surprise. A leaked spy shot (see below) of an unknown HTC phone started making the rounds recently, and the color scheme, button layout, and placement of the front-facing camera seem to indicate that these two devices are indeed one and the same. Should that be the case, then the One X 5 may well sport a Snapdragon S4 chipset, 1.5GB of RAM, and a 1080p display, though some of the specifics don’t quite add up. HTCSource’s insider claims that the device’s display has a whopping 480 ppi pixel density — a number that doesn’t really make sense since a 5-inch screen running at 1080p should top out at 440ppi or so — but I’m willing to chalk that up as a minor goof.

The red-and-black trim also seems to point to a future on Verizon Wireless (where it could sport the Droid Incredible X moniker), but that’s not exactly a lock. Remember the similar-looking HTC Sensation XE? (Please tell me I’m not the only one.) Still, the fact that the benchmarks of a similarly-spec’d device (and clearly Verizon-bound) HTC phone first appeared online earlier this summer could mean that the One X 5 may soon appear on domestic store shelves, albeit possibly without a stylus in tow.

There’s little question that HTC has something up its proverbial sleeve, but when will it finally see the light of day? It could be awfully soon — HTC does have a big press event on the books this week — but I wouldn’t hold my breath just yet. The prevailing theory is that the Taiwanese OEM will instead unveil its new Windows Phone 8 devices, though I don’t think any of us would mind being surprised by a top-tier Android device once the event is under way.

Engineers create first ever air-to-ground quantum network

Quantum cryptography is held to be one of the most secure methods of encrypting data. This is because if a quantum-encrypted data is intercepted to be read or altered, it changes and the interception is immediately detectable. Scientists have long been trying to apply quantum-encryption in the real world.

And now, a German team of engineers has been able to create the first-ever air-to-ground quantum network over which data has been sent. The network comprised of a plane flying at a height of 20 kilometers and a base station. (more…)

Dyson DC44 Animal Vacuum Review: Small, Sure, But It’s All About How You Use It [Home Mod]

We live in an age of robot cleaners scouring our floors for us with virtually no intervention. It takes a special vacuum cleaner to make you want to go back to using your arms again. But the DC44 Digital Slim vacuum is worth a look if you’re considering a Roomba—because this vacuum might actually be a better solution. More »

HTC One X 5-inch phablet leaked to take on Note

If you’re a fan of the Samsung Galaxy Note or the LG Intuition, 5-inch displays and all, you’ll be happy to see the competition continue to mount up with a new addition to the phablet universe from HTC. The following render and a bit of information leaked on the device lead us to believe that HTC will be taking the tall route – a 5-inch display with a whole lot more height than its got width. This device is ready for your palm, if this render is to be believed, while it still delivers a massive display and the full gamut of HTC One greatness – greatness we know and love.

Inside this device you’ll very likely be seeing a dual-core processor from Qualcomm if not the S4 Pro, a quad-core next-level processor from the Snapdragon masters. This device also looks very much to be sporting red flare like we’ve seen on a large cross-section of Verizon/HTC devices which makes us think that there may be some 4G LTE in this monster’s future. This device has also been called the DLX and the 6435LVW.

This device has three capacitive buttons up front near the bottom, a lovely speaker grill up top, and a center-top-mounted camera at the back that will almost certainly be at least 8 megapixels strong. You’ll likely be working with this device with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or – do we dare hope – Android 4.1 Jelly Bean by the end of this year.

This device may very well be shown off at the September 19th event in NYC that’ll have HTC showing off “what’s next”, whatever that may be. Here in this behemoth we’re inclined to believe that HTC is not aiming to be the last one left out of the phablet party. What say you?

Do You Use Your Tablet as a Second Screen? [Chatroom]

The use of a tablet or smartphone as a “second screen” is one of the favorite pieces of marketing trend hype amongst tech companies right now. They’re convinced we need apps—more apps, specific apps—to connect to the world and allow us to share our thoughts on whatever we’re watching (or perhaps more cynically, buy stuff). Is this how you use your tablet? Is this how you would want to use your tablet? More »

iPhone 5 begins shipping from Foxconn factory in China

The iPhone 5 won’t technically arrive until the end of the week, but some who pre-ordered the new device have already received confirmation that their handset has shipped. A few readers of 9to5Mac have sent in emails showing that their iPhone 5s shipped from Zhengzhou, China yesterday. Infamous Apple supplier Foxconn has a factory not too far from there, so it seems that the company has been hard at work getting Apple’s newest iDevice out the door.

Most of the emails indicate that Foxconn is shipping these out via UPS, and almost all of them have an arrival date of September 21, the same day the iPhone 5 is scheduled to launch in a number of regions around the world. Not long after the story was posted, 9to5Mac writer Jake Smith received an email stating that his iPhone 5 was on the way as well. His shipping slip said that the device would be delivered today, but so far there’s no word on whether or not that happened, suggesting that it’s being held until September 21.

Of course, not everyone can expect to have their iPhone 5 ship so soon. Earlier today we found out that pre-orders for the iPhone 5 blew past 2 million in the first 24 hours, and you can bet that absurd number is still rising very quickly. It stands to reason that even a company as big as Apple will have at least some trouble keeping up with that many pre-orders, so it wouldn’t surprise us to see some people getting their iPhone 5s after the handset’s official release date.

Still, for those who are pumped up for the arrival of the iPhone 5, seeing that some of them have started shipping has to be exciting. Some analysts are predicting a staggering amount of sales for the iPhone 5, and we won’t have to wait very long to find out just how popular Apple’s latest is. Are you one of the millions who have pre-ordered the iPhone 5?

Zorro Macsk review: instantly add touchscreen functionality to your 21.5-inch iMac

DNP Zorro Macsk review instantly add touchscreen functionality to your 215inch iMac

Over the years we’ve come across a few signs that pointed to the possibility of touchscreen-enabled iMacs, but Steve Jobs had already dismissed this as a possibility for current Mac form factors. Quoting the man at the “Back to the Mac” keynote from two years ago: “It gives great demo, but after a while your arm feels like it’s going to fall off. Touch surfaces want to be horizontal.”

So perhaps our fantasy’s still stuck in the “research project” phase.

Luckily, the more adventurous touchscreen lovers can look to third-party solutions. For MacBooks you have Axiotron’s Modbook, except you lose the keyboard and you can’t perform the modification yourself. As for iMacs and Cinema Displays, we’ve been following Troll Touch for its resistive touchscreen replacement panels, but they aren’t exactly affordable and most of them have to be installed by the company. Even its user-installable SlipCover series starts from $899, anyway.

This leaves us with the Zorro Macsk, a cheekily named iMac accessory hailing from TMDtouch of Shenzhen, China. The 21.5-inch model is priced at just $199 on Amazon with no modifications required. Plus, it supports multitouch — a glaring omission from Troll Touch’s Mac lineup. So is this truly a bargain? Or is it just a case of “you get what you pay for?” Follow past the break to see how we got on with the Zorro Macsk.

Scientists levitate liquid drops with sound waves

You may have seen the levitation tricks performed in the magic shows. While that remains a part of popular fiction, scientists have also been apparently working on this front. And now, they have been able to levitate drops of liquid with the help of acoustic waves.

The liquid drops contained pharmaceuticals and were placed between two speakers creating sound waves at a certain frequency between the two. By adjusting these sound waves, scientists were able to cancel the gravitational effect on the drops of liquid and have them suspended in mid-air.  (more…)
