Amazon picks Nokia Location Platform for mapping service

Shortly before the reveal of Amazon‘s new line up of Kindle Fire tablets – including a refresh of the original Kindle Fire and the new Kindle Fire HD – we heard whispers that the company was joining forces with Nokia for its mapping service. The rumor didn’t come as much of a surprise, considering that Amazon has cut Google out of the loop considerably with its Kindle Fire line, but today is the first time we’ve received confirmation that Amazon has indeed licensed Nokia’s Location Platform.

Nokia spokesperson Dr. Sebastian Kurme confirmed the rumors to the The Next Web, saying in a statement that Amazon’s decision is “further proof point that our competence in this space is a key differentiator also for other leading players in the industry to offer great location consumer experiences.” Though Google Maps is the more popular mapping and navigation service, the Nokia Location Platform has won a fair number very pleased fans, and it’s already used in services like Yahoo! Maps and Bing Maps.

Amazon has already rolled out a Maps API to allow developers to integrate location data into their Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD apps, and now we know that Amazon will be using Nokia’s Location Platform as the backbone of its mapping service. It wasn’t too long ago that we heard Amazon will be making Bing the default search engine of the Kindle Fire line up, further distancing itself from Google. Naturally, the Kindle Fire family comes equipped with Amazon’s online storefront rather than the Google Play Store, which we see running on most other Android-based devices.

Of course, Nokia’s Location Platform is also used in Nokia Drive, which has featured prominently on Windows Phone devices. With Windows Phone 8 just around the corner and Amazon’s new Kindle Fire line getting some major attention, it looks Nokia has an excellent opportunity to position itself as a key player in the mapping space, so the further development of its Location Platform is definitely something to watch. Keep it tuned here to SlashGear for more information.

Superior armor being researched for the US Army

Every single day, there are members of the US Army around the world who get in the line of fire while fulfilling their duty for the country, and needless to say, some of these encounters result in serious injury or even death. The US Army intends to cut down on the mortality rate by handing over $90 million to Johns Hopkins University so that a team of researchers at Rutgers University, the University of Delaware and the California Institute of Technology, accompanying private companies and the military, will work on a new kind of protective armor which has the final goal of reducing body armor weight by 30% while ensuring it is 50% more efficient.

At the end of the day, the ‘perfect’ body armor would be a careful balance of ratio between weight, mobility and protection. Of course, there are some projects in the past that relied on spider silk to create a “bulletproof skin”, but if you are talking about protection from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), then it is safe to assume that nothing at this point in time will be able to protect a soldier as even a tank can be done in by an IED. Of course, Captain America’s fictional vibranium shield does seem to be able to handle anything thrown at it, so until that day arrives, we will just have to keep our fingers crossed that the “superior armor” the US Army is looking for will be conjured up in labs, soon.

HTC Droid Incredible X photo spotted, more details revealed

We brought you word on the HTC 6435LVW earlier this morning, and just in case you thought that the model number is gibberish, perhaps a more layperson’s approach when it comes to naming convention might do the trick. The HTC DIx, or speculated to be the Droid Incredible X, has been spotted and what you see above is the customary blurry spy shot that has made its way around the Internet, burning up bandwidth along the way.

To refresh your memory, there are “confirmed” specifications for the HTC DIx to carry a 480ppi display, a quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1.5GB RAM and 16GB of internal memory, in addition to a second notification LED which alerts you at a glance for calls/missed alerts/charging which is located at the back in the vicinity of the camera. Not only that, there will be no microSD memory card slot accompanying this device, and the non-removable battery will definitely result in disappointment for many.

The above photo might seem familiar to you, as it is the same one that we saw a couple of weeks back.

Rovio releases video of ‘Bad Piggies’ gameplay

Rovio has been gearing up to present the pig’s side of the story. Earlier this year, the company announced that there’s more to the ‘Angry Birds’ story than flinging birds on to the pigs. And that it’s time for us to see the ‘pigger’ picture. We already know that the game is set to launch for Android, iOS, PC and Mac on September 27th.

Rovio has now released a video which gives a first sneak peek at the actual gameplay of ‘Bad Piggies.’ The game-developer is known for producing physics games and Bad Piggies is no exception to that. (more…)

Box Accelerator triples cloud upload speeds versus its rivals, comes to syncing apps soon video

Upstream speeds are frequently the bottlenecks for cloud storage: an entire company might be held back waiting for that last presentation video to go online before the big meeting. Box wants much more parity through Accelerator, a custom infrastructure that should make uploads hum. It uses Amazon’s EC2 for help, but the real magic comes through a mix of Box’s own network and special prioritization. Accelerator goes beyond just location to factor in the browser, OS and other criteria that could affect a data packet’s journey. The company claims through outside studies that its average 7MB/s speeds make it the upload king by a wide margin, to the tune of 2.7 times its fastest worldwide rival and 3.1 times any of its American counterparts. Peak speeds are up to 10 times faster than before, if you go by the company’s word. Most of the focus is on corporate customers and speeding up access near the provider’s ten global access points, but Box is planning both to ramp up performance in more areas and bring Accelerator to the company’s syncing platforms in the near future — an obvious lure for would-be Dropbox customers.

Lexus LF-CC Concept Car slices the eyes at Paris Motor Show

The folks at Lexus have brought on another fabulous concept car in the LF-CC, coming at you in full how sharp action at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. This vehicle brings on much of the excellence that the LF-LC showed at the 2012 Detroit Motor Show, this time as a mid-sized coupe with more compact rear-wheel drive. This vehicle works with a bold L-finesse design language and has some wild grille mesh and a deep low front spoiler to keep your beast of a concept pulled in close to the road.

The broad low fenders here on the LF-CC are shaped in a way that’s aerodynamically sound, made to manage the flow of air to the engine bay and front brakes. The convex curve of the bonnet works with a roofline that peaks toward the rear of the cabin, all of this made to keep wind emphasis on the vehicle’s rear-wheel drive powertrain. This vehicle’s whole body is pronounced much up front much more than the rear, here “reinforcing the concentration of vehicle weight over the driven wheels”, as Lexus notes, for maximum traction.

Airflow fins regulate the flow from the underside of the car and upwards through the rear wheel arch. The fin merges with the falling roofline together in a the spoiler on the back, this “fusing” design and aerodynamic elements in a lovely display of power. The entire vehicle is finished in a Fluid Titanium color with metallic finish.

This vehicle works with an all-new 2.5 litre hybrid powertrain, mind you, with low CO2 emissions aimed at below 100 g/km. This powertrain will bring on no more than 2 hp produced per gram of CO2, and works with a new smooth 2.5 litre 4-cylinder petrol engine with a high-output water-cooled permanent magnet electric motor. This new hybrid powertrain will indeed be appearing in Lexus’ future model range quite soon, too.

Inside the vehicle you’ve got a dashboard with an upper Display Zone and a lower Operation Zone. The first zone shows a multi-display screen for at-a-glance viewing while the second allows access to a shift lever and touch tracer display – just what you always wanted. Stick around here on SlashGear for more on this lovely vehicle as it continues Lexus’ legacy of lovely concepts through the future.

RoboCop armor spotted on movie set

Work on Paul Verhoven’s RoboCop remake has already started on an official basis in Toronto, Canada, where the first few shots of Joel Kinnaman in his new costume has started to make their way online. Needless to say, what you see over here is the new armor that is vastly different (and we would presume, superior) compared to the original suit which we saw way back in 1987. No longer will your eyes be greeted by gun-metal gray, but a cool, sleek black is the shade of the day, making me wonder what happens when RoboCop teams up with the GI Joes to keep the peace on the streets. Of course, moving away too radically from the original design might upset die hard fans of the series, so a careful balance will need to be achieved here.

What do you think of the new RoboCop body armor? Well, one thing’s for sure, you could more or less classify RoboCop as a zombie of sorts, except that this is a law abiding one that does not need to feed on human brains. Come to think of it, what kind of conversations do you think that RoboCop and Judge Dredd would have when they sit down over a pot of tea?
