Security researchers dissect Flame's handling program, find three new viruses 'at large'

It seems that there’s more than two out-of-control computer viruses roaming around the Middle East. Security researchers think that a further three could be operating “at large,” with one positively identified on machines in Iran and Lebanon. Teams from Symantec and Kaspersky have separately found that the Flame malware had the electronic equivalent of a “handler,” a program called NEWSFORYOU, which is also in charge of three viruses that are code-named SP, SPE and IP. The two teams have been unsuccessful in finding a sample of the trio for analysis and despite finding a cache of data on a command-and-control server, decoding it is “virtually impossible.” While both security companies have declined to point a finger as to their origin, Reuters’ sources suggest the United States, while The Washington Post has been told that the project was a joint-enterprise with Israel — in keeping with the existing narrative that the pair were behind Stuxnet.

Shazam recognizes any TV program or channel

Shazam has just passed 250 million users around the world, and what better way to celebrate that particular milestone in the app’s life than to expand Shazam for TV in the US, where it is now capable of recognizing any TV program or channel, now how about that? From now onwards, Shazam fans are able to use the app as a “TV companion app” alongside any TV show in the US, and when doing so, are able to access cast details and photos, music in the show, celebrity gossip, trivia, celebrity tweets, and links to additional information, not to mention being able to instantly share and comment on the show or episode via Facebook and Twitter.

Andrew Fisher, Shazam CEO, said, “With more than a quarter of a billion people who have used Shazam worldwide, no other app has our scale when it comes to offering the opportunity to engage with the media that interests them the most, whether it’s music or television. And now, that experience is even better than before, enabling people in the US to engage with any show at any time.”

You can obtain Shazam from the following: iTunes App Store, Google Play, Amazon App Store, AT&T’s AppCenter, Verizon VCast app store, Nokia Store, Windows Phone Marketplace, BlackBerry App World, and GetJar.

iPhone 5 targeted in new Samsung Galaxy S III ad

If you had to pick between the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S III, which one you choose? A new ad from Samsung looks to make the decision easy. Rolled out over the weekend, this new ad compares the specifications of the two phones side-by-side, saying that “it doesn’t take a genius” to figure out which one is the better phone.

That phrase, obviously, is taking a shot at Apple‘s famous Geniuses, who pop up in Apple’s stores to tell you all about the company’s products. Looking at the full ad below, you can see that the list of specs and features for the Galaxy S III is quite a bit longer than the one for the iPhone 5. Naturally, Samsung points to the S III’s 4.8-inch screen running at 1280×720 resolution while the iPhone 5 has a 4-inch one at 1136×640. Both offer 1080p video recording, and while the iPhone 5 may be smaller, the Galaxy S III has it beat when it comes to RAM (2GB to iPhone 5′s 1GB) and talk time (11.4 hours to iPhone 5′s 8).

The Apple faithful have since bitten back with an ad of their own, this one titled “Don’t settle for cheap plastic.” In this ad, we see the iPhone 5 sporting the longer list of specs and features, with around the second half of Samsung’s list for the Galaxy S III missing entirely. You can see both full-size ads by clicking on their respective thumbnails below.

What’s the takeaway from all of this? You should probably just pick the phone that suits you best instead of obsessing over comparing specs and features. After all, there’s a reason why the Samsung Galaxy S III has sold 20 million units since launch, just as there’s a reason why people line up year after year to pick up the latest iteration of the iPhone. Don’t expect this to be the last of Samsung’s assault on the iPhone 5, however, as the company is rumored to have a commercial in the works that aims to pull people away from the allure of the iPhone 5. Stay tuned.

Google acquires Nik Software: Gearing up to compete with Instagram?

The mobile photo filtering and editing space has been predominantly occupied by the popular app, Instagram. It has come to dominate photo-editing both on iOS as well as Android devices. And ever since Facebook acquired the company, the social network also seems to be making encroaches into mobile photo editing.

The question is, is there room enough for yet another contender? Because Google seems to be gearing up to enter the ring. It has just concluded the purchase of ‘Nik Software’, which is the very company that created the popular Snapseed app for iOS. (more…)

Vending machine dishes out organic milk

When it comes to getting fresh milk, you can purchase yours off the shelf from the local store, or milk the cow in your barn, it cannot get any fresher than that. However, some of us who prefer to live out the organic lifestyle are able to check out this particular vending machine in the small British town of Kingham, where it actually dishes out organic, non-homogenized milk from Guernsey cows.

All you need to do is drop a few coins into the vending machine, and organic milk will be dispensed into a glass bottle with a screw top. The machine is the possession of Adam and Caroline Fleming, where the couple runs the nearby Nell’s Dairy and will fill it up with fresh milk every couple of days. The inspiration behind this vending machine came after they spotted a somewhat similar idea when holidaying in Italy some time back. Guess having the supermarket closed is not going to be an issue as long as you have the right amount of spare change!

Nokia cops to powering Amazon's mapping service

Well, Amazon is being pretty tight lipped about the details of its mapping service, but Nokia isn’t afraid to spill the beans. A spokesperson for the Finish company, Sebastian Kurme, told The Next Web that Amazon is indeed licensing the Nokia Location Platform for its latest Google-shunning product. We reached out as well and were fed the exact same official statement, confirming that Nokia is becoming an even bigger player in the mapping sphere. The platform is already the basis for Yahoo! Maps and a large portion of Bing’s offerings as well. Not to mention Nokia Drive, the company’s navigation software, is one of the crown jewels of the Windows Phone world. Check out the full statement from Nokia below.

Amazon is licensing the Nokia Location Platform (NLP) for maps and geocoding.

The Nokia Location Platform is the most advanced mobile location platform with a unique global footprint. It provides maps for almost 200 countries (with more than 100 of them navigable) and provides the best, automotive-grade map quality based on industry-leading technology and more than 20 years expertise in mapping.

Amongst others, it is already powering Yahoo Maps, and increasingly also powering Bing Maps as well.

Location is playing a central role in our strategy, and because of its global footprint, quality and completeness of performance (geocoding, routing, traffic) the Nokia Location Platform offers great opportunities for 3rd parties to build upon.

Amazon´s decision to choose the Nokia Location Platform is further proof point that our competence in this space is a key differentiator also for other leading players in the industry to offer great location consumer experiences.

Pregnancy test vending machine in a bar is a world’s first

Just like how oil and water do not mix, so too are alcohol and being pregnant. The thing is, there are some party goers among the ladies who might not know that they are pregnant, which is where the idea for a pregnancy test vending machine being installed in bars comes in handy, helping prevent prenatal exposure to alcohol. It makes sense really, considering how drinking alcohol when one is pregnant is able to do extensive harm to the unborn child.

Healthy Brains for Children, a non-profit group in Minneapolis, Minnesota, intends to avoid such a thing from happening by working on installing up to 100 pregnancy test vending machines in local bars. Assuming this idea takes off, it would mean that the rest of the world will have the option to see this machine at bars down the road.

Pub 500, a bar in Mankato, south of Minneapolis-St. Paul, has one of these machines installed in the privacy of the women’s restroom. Those who want to use the service will need a debit or credit card, where $3 will be charged to the card in exchange for a pregnancy test. Do you think that this idea will take off?
