Buildabear's new store concept wants you to choose, love, stuff and fluff with hightech

If little Johnny thought Build-a-Bear had nothing for his tech-savvy toddler sensibilities, he’d better think again. The plush toy-seller has just launched a new high-tech store concept that it hopes will help re-engage children otherwise distracted with tablets, phones and game consoles. The new additions include a 55-inch interactive digital sign out front, with touchscreen and Kinect functionality, complete with unlockable content via barcodes. Once inside, four Samsung SUR40 smart tables loaded with custom software offer a range of different parts of the teddy-making process, as well as interact with the toys in real-time — like a virtual bubble bath — thanks to a purpose-built tagging system. The sound side of things also gets a lick of paint, with six audio “zones” created, using ultrasonic speakers that can target sound to specific parts of the store and stop all the collective noise from reverberating like something from a bad dream. The first such shop is already open in St Louis, with five more locations to follow: Pleasanton CA, Annapolis MD, Troy MI, Fairfax VA and Indianapolis IN between October and November.

Dish Network in talks with Viacom to offer Internet-based channels

With the massive adoption of Internet streaming for movies and TV shows many cable companies are worrying that changes may spell doom for the industry. While many mainstream cable companies don’t like the thought of streaming Internet content or smaller channel bundles, Dish Network is said to be talking to networks about offering channels over the Internet. Dish Network is said to be in talks with networks, including Viacom.

Bloomberg reports that five people familiar with Dish Networks plans have tipped that the satellite provider is in talks with Viacom to offer channels such as MTV over the Internet. Dish Network is also said to be in talks with Univision Communications, and Scripps Networks Interactive. Scripps owns the Food Network and HGTV.

According to sources, Dish Network and the television networks would offer an online product known as an over-the-top service charging a lower price to allow a smaller bundle of channels to be viewable on computers or tablets via the Internet. If the reports are accurate, Dish Network’s effort would be the biggest attempt so far to create an online service with live channels. Other online streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu don’t offer live programming, though Netflix offers some original programming.

Reports indicate that Viacom would be willing to sell smaller bundles of its individual networks such as Nickelodeon and Comedy Central a higher than what it currently charges for its full range of programming. The move is also seen as a way for Dish Network to reduce one of its biggest cost centers, which happens to be sports programming. ESPN reportedly gets as much as $5.13 monthly per subscriber, whether subscribers watch the network or not. The smaller channel packages will allow users not interested in sports to choose packages that don’t offer those channels.

Microsoft’s Kinect appears in Paranormal Activity 4, used to detect ghosts

We’ve all seen Microsoft’s Kinect being used in the medical field, the financial field and even automotive field where customers can inspect a car model virtually if the model does not happen to be in stock. Well now it looks like Microsoft’s Kinect can even be used to detect ghosts – at least that’s what the latest Paranormal Activity 4 trailer seems to suggest. Granted it was used in a movie so we’re not sure if those claims are actually true – we hope not because we would certainly never be able to look at our Kinect the same way again! In any case, the trailer reveals the use of the Kinect used to track activity, mostly humans, at least until later on when it picked up something that appears to be rather supernatural in nature. Either way it’s pretty creepy but it’s interesting to see that even Hollywood acknowledges the Kinect’s functionality beyond just gaming.

Blizzard’s project “Titan” in the middle of development with over 100 team members

It has become common knowledge that Blizzard has a new MMO in the works which has been given the codename “Titan”. It is expected to be a next-gen MMO, although what exactly that means remains to be seen. Now for those who have been earnestly keeping track of Titan’s process, you might be interested to learn that in an interview with Curse, Blizzard’s VP of game design, Rob Pardo, revealed that Titan is “definitely in the middle of development at this point” and features a team of over 100 people.

For those wondering, Titan is Blizzard’s upcoming MMO and thanks to a leaked road map spotted in 2011, it has been revealed that Titan was on track for a release in 2013. No word on when exactly in 2013 it will be made available, but according to Pardo, it’s a big project and has a long way to go, but hopefully Blizzard will make their 2013 projected date. However given Blizzard’s past and the tendency to delay games to bring up the quality, just like Pardo stated, don’t get your hopes up just yet. In any case we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled, so check back with us at a later date where hopefully more details about project Titan will be available! In the meantime you can check out the full interview in the video above.

Resident Evil 6 street date broken in Australia

Resident Evil 6Are you looking forward to playing Resident Evil 6? As some of you guys are probably aware, the release date for the game has been pegged for the 2nd of October 2012, but it looks like if you live in Australia, you can get your hands on the game earlier thanks to some retailers breaking the street date. This was revealed by Game Informer AU via their Facebook page and is apparently limited to just Australia. We’re not sure if retailers in other countries have broken the street date as well, so for now this applies to Australian gamers. We’re pretty sure that Capcom can’t be pleased about this and like we said earlier, not all retailers have broken the dates so if you live in Australia and want to pick up a copy of Resident Evil 6 early, you should probably start calling up the various retailers to see who has the game in stock.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance collector’s edition will come with a Raiden sword lamp

If you’re planning on picking up Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, depending on how big a fan you are of the franchise, you might be interested to learn that there will be a collector’s edition of the game. It will be released alongside the regular version which means you will be able to pick it up come 19th of February 2013. No word on pricing just yet, but we’re sure that many of you are curious as to what sort of goodies the collector’s edition will come bundled with. Well for starters, gamers can expect a soundtrack to be bundled with the game, a special packaging of the game itself, and here’s the kicker – a “high frequency plasma lamp” which has been designed to resemble Raiden’s sword. Pretty cool, huh? So, any Metal Gear Rising fans planning on picking up the collector’s edition just for the sword lamp?

Instagram beats twitter for the first time in daily mobile user metric

Unless you live under a rock, you know what twitter and Instagram are. Twitter is a microblogging platform and Instagram is the photo taking and sharing application that allows users to apply all sorts of filters to their pictures. Recent data from a comScore mobile measurement report has shown that Instagram has beat twitter in daily mobile users for the first time ever.

The report shows that during August, Instagram had an average of 7.3 million daily active users. Twitter by comparison had an average of 6.9 million daily average users during the same month. Not only did Instagram have more daily active users than the more established twitter; users also spent more time with Instagram.

The data shows that the average Instagram user spent 257 minutes on the photo sharing site using mobile devices. The average Twitter user on the other hand spent only 170 minutes viewing content via mobile devices. Perhaps the most interesting thing about users for both services during the month is that twitter had more smartphone-based visitors during the month than Instagram.

Twitter had approximately 29 million unique smart phone-based visitors for the month compared to Instagram’s 22 million. The data clearly shows that Instagram users visit the service more often and spend more time interacting than twitter users.

Sprint to offer Samsung Galaxy S3 for $50 on contract during Black Friday?

Planning on picking up the Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone but thought its price on contract was still a bit too steep for your liking? Granted it is a lot cheaper compared to buying it unlocked, but we’re sure that there are some out there who just do not have the money to spare. Well the good news is that thanks to a leaked flyer courtesy of the folks at Engadget, it looks like come Black Friday, Sprint will be offering the Samsung Galaxy S3 for $50 on contract! That is pretty darn cheap and like the leaked poster suggested, you will be saving yourself $150 in the process. This offer is obviously only valid on Black Friday itself which will be taking place on the 23rd of November for the year of 2012. However given that Sprint hasn’t officially announced this offer yet, there is a chance that this poster could be a fake so until then, we suggest you not get your hopes up just yet, but it is probably worth keeping in the back of your mind especially if the Samsung Galaxy S3 is a handset you’ve been eyeing for a while now.

Fruity Loops Studio for Android is still in the works

iOS has plenty of music production and recording apps such as Garage Band, and while we’re sure that Android has their fair share of such apps as well, there are probably Android users out there who are missing one particular app – Fruity Loops Studio. Originally created for computers, Fruity Loops Studio eventually made its way onto iOS and if you’re an Android user looking forward to the app, the good news is that it’s already underway, but the bad news is that it looks like progress on the Android version is pretty slow. This was confirmed by the folks at Image Line who wrote on their website, “The process indeed goes a lot slower than any of us expected.” According to them, they are porting one tab a month which based on their list, well, it seems like Android users can only look forward to Fruity Loops Studio in 2013 at the earliest. In the meantime you can check out some of its features in the short demo video above.
