San Francisco Battles With Museum Union

Sotheby’s and its art handlers may have resolved their 10-month contract dispute earlier this year, but the labor fight is alive and well in the art world, and its current locus is San Francisco.

The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, which encompasses both the de Young Museum and the Legion of Honor, are currently engaged in a dispute with Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1021 over the contract of a group of 94 museum employees. The struggle has actually been going on for roughly a year already, but it has received little coverage.

Papercraft Minecraft Terrains: Wallcraft

3D printing is perfect for making Minecraft products. But that doesn’t mean you can’t use your ol’ 2D printer to bring your in-game creations to the real world. Laboratory 424 has made templates of Minecraft blocks that you can print, fold and then mount using adhesive foam.  papercraft minecraft terrain 4

Yep, each block in the picture above was printed, folded and attached individually. But this should be a cakewalk compared to the stuff you’ve built in the game right?

papercraft minecraft terrain 150x150
papercraft minecraft terrain 2 150x150
papercraft minecraft terrain 3 150x150
papercraft minecraft terrain 4 150x150

Head to Laboratory 424 for the full how-to and links to the templates and other materials. I suggest you start small, not because it’s difficult but because the cost for the adhesive foam blocks will add up quick.

Tim Huelskamp, GOP Congressman: Planned Parenthood’s ‘Sole Purpose Is Killing Children’ Of Minorities

Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.), who has four adoptive children of African American, Hispanic, and Native American descent, said on Friday that Planned Parenthood “was created for the sole purpose of killing children that look like mine.”

“Like the pro-slavery forces who invaded Kansas, the pro-abortion forces in Washington and elsewhere want us to believe that abortion is not murder — that being born is worse than death, that the unborn baby is property, not a person,” Huelskamp said at the 2012 Values Voter Summit, where vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) also spoke.

Huelskamp criticized Obama and the Democrats for wanting to fund Planned Parenthood, adding, “I am incensed that this president pays money to an entity that was created for the sole purpose of killing children that look like mine — a racist organization, and it continues specifically to target minorities for abortion destruction. Shame on this president and shame on that party.”

Find My iPhone Leads To Arrest Of Suspects In Atlanta Armed Robbery Case

overview_findmyiphone_hero

Apple’s iPhone has had its crime-fighting capabilities detailed before, but a new story today out of Atlanta (via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution) has its Find My iPhone feature helping to catch two suspects in an armed robbery case. After five women were held up at gunpoint near the Biltmore Hotel last night in the Georgia state capital, police tracked one of their stolen iPhones to an apartment and nabbed the suspects.

A tipster tells us that police used Find My iPhone, the service that Apple makes available to iCloud users who also own iPhone, iPod touch, Mac, and iPad hardware, to track the device. Find My iPhone has helped in arrests a number of times in the past, including in an armed robbery case reported by the L.A. Times last November.

The suspects in the case were both on probation when they were arrested, and police say the investigation is ongoing and others might still be involved. Find My iPhone actually has more useful features in store in iOS 6, including a method for tracking a device’s progress and marking its route on a map, so you don’t just see where it is, but also where it has been since it left your possession, which could theoretically help authorities build a timeline of events in cases like this one.

Here’s the company behind Nintendo TVii (spoilers: it’s not Nintendo)

Brad Pelo is suddenly in charge of a major Nintendo initiative for the Japanese company’s next big console, the Wii U, despite not being an employee at Nintendo. Instead, Pelo is CEO of i.TV — a “social television and second screen technology company” that’s worked with everyone from Entertainment Weekly to Engadget parent company AOL — and he’s the man responsible for Nintendo TVii.

At least he’s the man responsible for the company providing the software behind Nintendo TVii (the guy behind the guy, if you will). And his company brings more to the bargaining table than just software — existing relationships with cable providers and TiVO in the US bolster what i.TV offers Nintendo in a major way. “For Nintendo TVii, there is a mutual benefit in existing relationships we have. Like TiVO for example — we were the first to bring TiVO to the mobile platform. There’s also the benefit of tests that we have done over the years with the cable companies, based on components of our platform,” Pelo told Engadget.

But how did this all come about? He said it wasn’t long after Nintendo’s original Wii U E3 reveal. “The genesis of the experience you’re seeing here was really when the Wii U was announced, and it was clear that this is the ideal second screen,” Pelo explained. “Ideal,” in Pelo’s eyes, means a closed system with a “dedicated second screen.” In so many words, while he acknowledges that tablets offered by other manufacturers are technically superior, they don’t offer the same whole-system approach that Nintendo’s Wii U is offering. “You might not think of it as the ideal hardware compared to an iPad if I really had a dedicated second screen. But it is in the living room, and it’s persistent. It doesn’t even really work outside of the living room — it’s attached to the main viewing service in the home,” he explained, referencing the Wii U’s tablet-style controller.

Wall Street May Hate Obama, But It’s Betting On His Victory

Wall Streeters may not want President Obama to get reelected, but that is not going to stop them from trying to make money on his possible second term.

Traders are increasingly betting on industries that thrive under under Democratic leaders and against those companies that might do better in a country run by Mitt Romney and Republicans, according to a new Wall Street Election Poll Index created by Jeffrey Kleintop, chief market strategist at LPL Financial, a Boston brokerage.

The index, which dates back to the start of the year, tracks the stock performance of industries helped by Democrats against those typically helped by Republicans. It is up 15 percent so far this year, hitting a new high this week.
