White House Warns Of ‘Destructive’ Budget Cuts

WASHINGTON (AP) — A White House report is warning that $110 billion in across-the-board spending cuts would be “deeply destructive” to the military and core government responsibilities like patrolling U.S. borders and air traffic control if they aren’t canceled before they take effect in January.

The report says the automatic cuts were mandated by the failure of last year’s congressional deficit “supercommittee” to strike a deal and would require across-the-board trims of 9 percent to most Pentagon programs and 8 percent to many domestic programs.

The cuts, combined with the expiration of Bush-era tax cuts at the end of the year, have been dubbed the “fiscal cliff.” Economists warn that the one-two punch could drive the economy back into recession.

Padma Laskhmi Reveals True Feelings For White Wine Spritzers In ‘Esquire’ Interview

Padma Lakshmi DOES NOT like white wine spritzers. Eater point us to a recent wine interview with Esquire Magazine, she called the fizzy concoction “a real pussy drink.”

Esquire’s Matt Goulet sat down with the Top Chef host and cookbook author recently, to talk wine and her new partnership with Sterling Vineyards. We’re guessing he got a little more than he bargained for. Here’s a bit of context for Lakshmi’s hilarious comment:

ESQ: You seem as capable as anyone to show men how to drink wine. What do you think about it?

iPhone 5 simultaneous voice and LTE data on GSM only – for now?

Those of you pumped up about the iPhone 5 bringing in architecture that allows simultaneous voice and data on a single radio, take heed: it’s been confirmed that this ability only works on GSM-based LTE (and 3G) networks. If you’re planning on working with a network that uses CDMA for voice and LTE for data, you’ll be out of luck – they’ll both work, just not at the same time. The key here may be in the official Apple statement (as seen below) which includes a “not yet” which may keep some doors open.

If you’re working with AT&T with the iPhone 5, you’ll be on GSM, and will be able to work with simultaneous voice and data right out of the gate. If you’re on any other carrier here in the USA, you’ll be working with CDMA, and will not yet have that functionality. Have a peek at the official statement from Apple on this situation.

“iPhone 5 supports simultaneous voice and data on GSM-based 3G and LTE networks. It is not yet possible to do simultaneous voice and data on networks that use CDMA for voice and LTE for data in a single radio design.” – Apple

Again keep your eyes on that “not yet possible” and decide for yourself whether or not that means that the operating system will be able to be tweaked to a degree in the future to allow both voice and data at the same time over LTE. For those of you that do plan on purchasing an iPhone 5 and have not yet chosen a carrier, take a peek at the timeline below with a collection of iPhone 5 news bits and updates to help you see.

Kansas Birther Case Ends After Joe Montgomery Withdraws Objection to Obama On Ballot

A Kansas man who filed an objection with the state to President Barack Obama appearing on the state’s ballot, is withdrawing his objection.

Joe Montgomery’s decision, which he communicated in an email to the secretary of state’s office Friday afternoon, ends a process that caused the all-Republican Kansas Objections Board to vote unanimously Thursday to seek further information before making a decision on whether Obama could be on the ballot.

Montgomery told The Huffington Post Friday afternoon that public reaction to the complaint led him to decide against continuing. He declined to say exactly what was said in the calls and emails he received, but indicated that people who knew him both personally and professionally were also contacted about the complaint.

Va. Board Of Health Passes Abortion Clinic Regulations Under Pressure

Under pressure from Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) and Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, the Virginia Board of Health voted on Friday to pass a set of building regulations that could force many abortion clinics in the state to shut down.

Opponents of the regulations, which include minimum hallway widths, specific ventilation systems and covered entrances, argue that they are medically unnecessary and meant for the construction of new hospitals — not as regulations for existing outpatient abortion clinics. None of the 20 clinics in the state that are applying for a new license currently meet the requirements, and in order to come into compliance in the allotted two-year time period they would have to undergo costly, extensive renovations.

The board voted to pass the regulations in June along with an amendment that would have grandfathered in existing clinics. But Cuccinelli refused to certify the version the board passed and told members that adopting such an amendment was outside their scope of power. He said the legislation that directed the board to regulate abortion clinics as hospitals, sponsored by Del. Kathy Byron (R-Lynchburg), did not intend for existing clinics to be exempt. The legislation called for the board to pass regulations on building specifics.

Japan vows to end nuclear power generation by 2030

In the wake of floods and earthquakes in Japan back in 2011, the worst disaster that ensued was that of the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Since then, there has been a mounting pressure on the Japanese government to cut down its reliance on nuclear power plants and look to alternate modes of power production.

Although the nuclear industry in Japan has been trying to implement stricter standards to thwart the possibility of any other such happenings at a nuclear plant, the popular opinion still remains against nuclear power plants. And now, Japanese government has resounded these sentiments by vowing to end nuclear power production by the year 2030. (more…)
