Twitter hands over Occupy Wall Street protestor's updates under pressure

Twitter has been building a modest reputation for siding with the little guy (or girl) when it comes to communication privacy, and it just demonstrated how far it’s willing to go in a showdown with Manhattan’s Criminal Court over a demand to hand over tweets from Occupy Wall Street protestor Malcolm Harris. The social network has been pushed into delivering the claimed evidence, but only as it faced a deadline and the threat of a fine — it even tried one last request for a stay before producing hard copies of the messages. However much the handover affects Harris’ chances at winning during trial, it emphasizes that public posts have serious consequences — companies ultimately can’t shield you from the law.

Microsoft employees enjoy a very Windows Christmas

It would seem that being a Microsoft employee this year would require you to purchase a new jacket, preferably one with large pockets, as it was reported that Microsoft employees will be on the receiving end of Surface tablets, Windows Phone 8 handsets, and Windows 8 computers.

The announcement from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer did rouse quite the enthusiastic response at the end of the company’s annual employee meeting. We are not talking about just a select group of employees, but rather, all of Microsoft’s employees around the world (numbering more than 90,000) will be on the receiving end of a Surface RT tablet and a Windows Phone 8 device of their choice among others. Hmmm, where do I sign up to be a Microsoft worker? One positive thing about this move would be the fact that the Windows Phone 8 user base would gain an instant boost, although the number will not run up to the millions, it is still a boost nonetheless. It might just help make Windows Phone 8 more visible in the eyes of the world.

Office 2013 arrive on Windows RT tablets this November

Microsoft’s ARM-powered Surface tablet that runs on the Windows RT platform has been confirmed to receive Office 2013 this coming November, which is just a couple of months away, so that means you do not have that long to wait, actually. Just what will Office for Windows RT deliver? Well, we do think that you have pretty much gotten all that you need as a basic computer user with the inclusion of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.

These tools will be made available at first via the pre-installed Office Home & Student 2013 RT package, where you ought to take note that these will not be sold as a standalone product. The full-featured version of Office for Windows RT will arrive virtually over on Windows Update from November until January. The reason behind the time window is due to the language version. Are you excited to pick up your Windows RT-powered Surface tablet before the year is over?

BeoPlay A8 dock upgrade program works with new Lightning connector

In May this year, we saw how the BeoPlay A8 audio system received an update which enabled it to support Apple’s AirPlay capability, and fast forward by a few months, we have arrived at yet another milestone in the BeoPlay A8’s life, which would include compatibility with the new Lightning connector that is found on the new iPhone 5 and iPod nano. Thanks to an exchangeable connector module in the BeoPlay A8, it allows you to completely remove the connector module for a totally clean look if you prefer to stick to wireless audio transmission.

Since you get what you pay for, and considering how you did fork out a handsome sum for the BeoPlay A8 ($1,149 in black or white, to be exact), it would please existing customers of the BeoPlay A8 to be on the receiving end of the new dock connector for free courtesy of the “A8 dock upgrade program.” Needless to say, new customers of the BeoPlay A8 will also be able to enjoy the benefits of this dock upgrade program, where you can register your email here so that you are able to receive additional details when available on the dock upgrade program. PETALS use smartphones as mine detectors

At this point in time, you can say that the most popular method of locating landmines would be through the use of metal detectors. Well, Red Lotus Technologies have come up with a new kind of technology that they dubbed PETALS, short for Pattern Enhancement Tool for Assisting Landmine Sensing. This particular system was the brainchild of co-founder Lahiru Jayatilaka, a Sri Lankan who first started working on this system while he was still a Harvard undergrad. The PETAL system would require help from your smartphones with initial demonstration photos depicting an iPhone in action, where said smartphone was connected to a device which is capable of reading the metallic signature of the buried item.

The handset will then show off the relative shape of the object, allowing observers a chance to visually determine whether the item is a potential landmine, some unwanted junk, or a pot of gold that lay buried and untouched after all these years. The PETALS project will have slightly more than a month left to raise a whopping $150,000 to see it come to fruition.

Google Glass shoots DVF video is first of its kind on YouTube

We talked about how Google’s Project Glass saw action at Fashion Week a few days ago, and here we are with additional information on Google Glass. What you see above is the very first short film that was recorded using Google Glass, and as you can see for yourself, the results do seem to be rather impressive – at least more than what some folks would have expected. Back in June at Google I/O, the video feedback, while exciting with plenty of different stuntmen working together to deliver the Google Glass to the stage, there was not much to ogle at in terms of video quality.

The short film above that is called “DVF Through Glass” do seem to show quite the improvement, where images are more stable, not to mention having a higher level of image quality. There are moments when some of the heavily edited footage do seem to indicate being recorded by traditional cameras, Google claims otherwise, saying that the entire footage was captured on Google Glass and Google Glass alone. Hopefully they won’t pull a Nokia on the world!

iPhone 5 unofficially coming to T-Mobile as Nano SIM orders leak

A sheet showing the newest SIM card size has been leaked showing T-Mobile working with the hardware that does not work with any other device on the carrier. This sheet ties up well with T-Mobile’s earlier word that they’ll be marketing themselves as an unlocked iPhone 5 alternative carrier for users in the USA that do not want to work with one of the top three – each of them, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint, having their own iterations of the smartphone sold straight through their store officially. Of course you won’t be able to work with 4G LTE here with T-Mobile, and you’ll have to purchase an unlocked iPhone 5, but you’ll have to do what you must!

If you do indeed want to work with T-Mobile with an unlocked iPhone, the sheet you’re seeing here from TmoNews shows that you’ll be able to begin your journey in mid-October at the earliest. As the sheet notes, “the only phone that currently uses a Nano SIM card is the Apple iPhone 5″ and “no T-Mobile devices require this SIM card” at the moment. This card also has some other limits, one of them being 508 contacts with 3 numbers per contact and one email address per contact as well.

T-Mobile plans on bringing a force of advertisements for the public to join their team with the iPhone 5 off-contract once they’ve got their cards in order. If you do plan on purchasing an iPhone 5 off-contract, Apple notes that you’ll be paying the following prices: $649 (16GB), $749 (32GB), And $849 (64GB) – the GB being how much internal storage you’ve got on the device. Also note that there are currently two color combinations available – black and white.

Have a peek at our Apple portal for more information on the iPhone 5 and hit the timeline below to see more bits on Apple’s latest launch. We’ve got hands-on with the iPhone 5 as well as the two new iPod units – cute stuff! Stick around for our eventual review of the iPhone 5 too!
