Intel claims Clover Trail-based Atom won’t properly run Linux, points us to Windows 8 instead

Tux the Penguin laments Intel's decision on Linux

There’s potentially bad news ahead if you’re hoping to wipe the drive on that future HP Envy X2 and load Ubuntu — Intel reportedly claimed at IDF that Clover Trail-based Atom processors “cannot” handle Linux properly. As outlined in The Inquirer‘s account of events, the issue is more a matter of optimization than an outright block: Linux doesn’t yet know how to cope with all of Clover Trail’s power state changes at the kernel level, which would put any penguin-powered PC at a disadvantage. Intel would really, really prefer that you run Windows 8, as the new Atom and Microsoft’s OS are tuned to work hand-in-hand. Linux might catch up, but the Windows-only emphasis is a sharp break from Intel’s tendency to shower love on open-source OS projects across the board, including ongoing work like Intel-native Android builds or Tizen.

Hurricane Katrina Class Action Lawsuit Settled For $61 Million

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A state-run insurance company of last resort agreed Thursday to settle two remaining class-action lawsuits tied to claims handled after hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The board for the Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corp. voted unanimously to settle the long-running lawsuits for $61 million. Policyholders sued the company over the slow handling of claims after the hurricanes struck in 2005.

The board also authorized company CEO Richard Robertson to place caps of $4,500 per claim, $150,000 for court costs and $750,000 for administrative expenses.

Carriers overcount your data consumption, study reveals

When using mobile phones with data plans, one of the major concerns of the users is to try and keep their data volume low so as not to bump the monthly bill. However, too often users complain that they feel their wireless carriers charge them for more than their actual data usage.

It so seems that such suspicions of the users may not be so wrong, after all. According to a new study at UCLA, the wireless carriers are able to ‘calculate’ the data usage correctly most of the times. However, they may make mistakes at times and when they do, they usually overcount the data usage. (more…)

Creative Arts Emmys 2012: How Stars Survive The Ceremony

LOS ANGELES — The makeup artists, art directors, sound mixers and cinematographers behind the year’s top TV shows will be honored Saturday at the television academy’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony, a five-hour marathon that covers more than 70 categories.

The show is taped, edited down to a tidy two hours and broadcast a week later (typically the night before the big Primetime Emmy Awards show). But the nominees in those behind-the-scenes technical categories – and even some actors and TV hosts – often sit through the daylong show to support their colleagues and see if they’ve won.

Scott Brown Ad Insists He’s ‘Pro-Choice’

Sen. Scott Brown’s (R-Mass.) campaign released a new ad on Friday that touts the candidate’s “pro-choice” values and support for equal pay, despite the fact that Brown has voted in favor of anti-birth control legislation and against the Paycheck Fairness Act.

In the ad, a Massachusetts woman discusses her support for Brown. “Scott Brown is pro choice, and he supports a woman’s right to choose,” she says. “I like that Scott Brown is independent, he really thinks for himself. His record shows that he supports women, he supports families. When my daughters grow up, I want to make sure that they have good jobs with equal pay, and I know Scott Brown will fight for that.”

The ad is somewhat misleading. Scott Brown voted with his GOP colleagues to block the Paycheck Fairness Act in June. He supported the controversial Blunt amendment, which would allow any employer to deny contraception coverage its to workers, and he was recently endorsed by Massachusetts Citizens for Life.

Profanity Generator Lets You Get Creative with Your Curses

Here’s a couple of things you can do when you’re angry: grab your Damnit Doll, whip out your Calligraphuck Cards, or reach for your Profanity Generator. The first two options delay your expression of anger, while the last just helps you come up with words to describe it.

Creative Cursing Profanity GeneratorI’m not saying you should take the pad and yell out insults to the person who offended you. Rather, you might find that it actually helps dissipate your anger by showing you a neat selection of often humorous curses like ‘crap wad’, ‘fart monkey’, and ‘ass waffle.’ Yes, I said ‘ass waffle.’ With syrup.

The Profanity Generator is available online from Fred Flare for $10.95(USD).

Sony Xperia V gets Clear Phase feature

The Sony Xperia V was first announced to the world at the end of last month at IFA 2012, and while we await the device to arrive at our shores, here is a quick sneak peek at one of the features that the Xperia V will carry that has never been spotted before in prior Xperia devices, known as “Clear Phase”. This feature is highly visible in the user interface of the Xperia V, where it was seen carrying the following description: “Automatically adjust the sound quality of the internal speaker”.

In the past, Clear Phase technology did make an appearance on Vaio notebooks, so it makes perfect sense if Sony wants the rest of their device family (or at least, another member) to be on the receiving end of this particular function. No idea on whether Clear Phase will also make an appearance on the Sony Xperia T, but that would be just a matter of time (in a few weeks, in fact) when the smartphone arrives in the market. Just how much better do you think your audio experience on the Xperia V will be with Clear Phase enabled? I would say that the impact on its battery life is minimal.

John Eklund, Photographer, Creates Time-Lapse Video Of Pacific Northwest With 260,000 Photos (VIDEO)

To create this stunning time-lapse video featuring landscapes from the Pacific Northwest, Oregon photographer John Eklund of The Art Of Time-Lapse weaved together about 260,000 photographs he had spent about a year capturing.

“I originally got into landscape photography because I had an interest in capturing the beauty in nature,” Eklund said in an email to the Smithsonian Magazine.

“Then one day, I discovered a photographer online by the screen name of Mockmoon on YouTube. I was blown away by his timelapse work of the stars and Milky Way. After discovering timelapse photography, I viewed the typical landscape photography as static. With timelapse photography, it’s more dynamic. It captures the movement and changes in light that happens constantly in nature.”

Kindle Fire HD update arrives shortly after release

Boy, don’t you think that everything is moving a little bit too quickly? I mean, Amazon has just rolled out their spanking new 7” Kindle Fire HD and the first update is already out, now how about that? Let me not even talk about how some other older smartphones (one year old thereabouts) are still waiting for their respective software updates, and nothing has happened except for some cobwebs forming around the room. There is not much word on what Amazon has fixed with the first software update for the Kindle Fire HD, but it’s support page does mention that this update ought to “optimize its performance and functionality”.

When translated to plain English, it could mean that Amazon has plans to offer fantastic software support to their new tablet, or the initial batch of Kindle Fire HDs have some sort of software gremlin running about that needs serious and immediate attention. I would gun for the former, considering how we have yet to hear from Kindle Fire HD owners about potential issues with their tablet. Make sure your Kindle Fire HD is updated to software version number 7.1.5 if you want to remain ahead of the bunch.
