Intel's Core i3 NUC minisystem bares it all for IDF handson video

What’s red or black, 4 x 4 inches and exposes itself shamelessly on the show floor at IDF 2012? If you answered Intel’s Next Unit of Computing (NUC), you’d be right. The diminutive PC was on display at Intel’s Developer Forum along with its motherboard and cooling assembly. It comes in two flavors, a consumer-geared model with a single HDMI connector and Thunderbolt (in red) and a more business-centric version with two HDMI outputs and Ethernet (in black). Both mini-systems feature a third generation (Ivy Bridge) Core i3 CPU, QS77 chipset, two dual-channel DDR3 SoDIMM slots, mSATA and mini-PCIe interfaces (for SSD and WiFi cards), five USB 2.0 ports (two back, one front, two internal) and a socket for an external 19V DC power supply. The company hopes to get the attention of OEMs and DIY-ers alike when it makes this small, light and simple computer design available in October for about $400. Check out the gallery below and our hands-on video after the break.

Dodge Charger Pursuit offers sophisticated all-wheel drive system

Police officers all around the country have a new vehicle to choose from when it comes to selecting pursuit vehicles. The Dodge Charger Pursuit offers the segments most advanced all-wheel drive system. The all-wheel drive system in the Charger Pursuit is designed to deliver maximum all weather traction and fuel efficiency.

The vehicle features an active transfer case, and front axle disconnect system that automatically enables all-wheel drive during slick conditions. At the same time, the special transfer case and axle disconnect system maintains the performance and handling characteristics of a rear-wheel drive architecture. What that means is the car uses all-wheel drive only when slick and otherwise operates as a standard rear-wheel drive vehicle.

The sophisticated all-wheel drive system is optional on the Charger Pursuit, but is available for police departments to choose along with the 5.7 L Hemi V-8 engine. Dodge says that police fleet customers will be able to order the Dodge Charger Pursuit with all-wheel drive for the 2014 model year. Criminals trying to evade police might want to give up when the Dodge Charger Pursuit steps into the fray.

According to Dodge, the vehicle delivered the fastest lap ever recorded at the Michigan State Police Vehicle Evaluation Test for the 2012 model year with the time of 1:33.70 at Grattan Raceway in Michigan. The vehicle’s 5.7-liter V8 engine produces 370 HP and 390 pound-foot of torque. It also promises 25 highway mpg with a four-cylinder mode.

Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE mid-ranged phone announced for Sprint

If faster connections on your phone is more of a priority to you over hardware specs, then you might be interested to learn that Sprint has announced a new LTE handset that won’t break the bank and will be compatible with the carrier’s new LTE network. Dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE, this is a mid-ranged handset that will set customers back $99 on a new two year contract after a $50 mail-in rebate. So we’re sure that some of you are wondering what will you be getting for your $99? Well, would-be customers can expect to find a 4” display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor under the hood, a 5MP rear-facing camera, a 1.3MP front-facing camera, NFC, Google Wallet support, S Voice, S Beam, AllShare Play, 4GB of internal storage that can be expanded via microSD, 1GB of RAM and it will run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Not the most amazing phone we’ve seen to date with phones like the HTC One X and the Samsung Galaxy S3 out there, but for $99 it seems like it could be value for money, especially if 4G LTE connectivity was what you were after.

Verizon’s CFO says not to count RIM out

Verizon Wireless logoWhile the focus might be on Android and iOS at the moment, let’s not forget that as far as smartphones are concerned, RIM’s Blackberry devices used to reign supreme. However lately the company has taken quite a bit of hits, although many are hoping that the upcoming Blackberry 10 OS and its accompanying devices will be amazing enough for RIM to regain some market share. Verizon appears to be rather supportive of RIM’s efforts, and when asked about the possibility of keeping their options open when it came to operating systems apart from iOS and Android given the whole Apple versus Samsung legal battle, Verizon’s CFO Francis J. Shammo was quoted as saying not to count RIM out yet as there was a chance that they could come into the marketplace with an innovative product. We guess this isn’t too surprising since Verizon did confirm they would have Blackberry 10 devices on hand at launch in 2013.

Toyota RAV4 EV ready to roll into California

Toyota announced its new all electric 2012 RAV4 SUV several months ago. The EV will go on sale in California to begin with through select dealers who focus on major metropolitan areas. Toyota has announced special financing and customer lease options for the RAV4 EV.

Toyota says that the vehicle will go on sale the week of September 24 at the previously announced MSRP of $49,800. Toyota is giving customers the option to purchase or lease with special purchase financing of 1.9% APR for qualified customers. A 36-month lease option will cost $599 per month with $3499 before driving off in the car.

Toyota plans to sell 2600 RAV4 EVs through 2014. Whether or not Toyota will be able to sell that many of the EVs remains to be seen. Toyota’s electric competition such as the Nissan Leaf has been unable to meet sales targets.

The EV is expected to qualify for the California $2500 Clean Vehicle Rebate Program and is eligible for the $7500 Federal Tax Credit. The electric SUV will also qualify for the California High Occupancy Vehicle lane white sticker program. The electric RAV4 is EPA rated for a driving range of 103 miles with 78 city MPGe and 76 combined MPGe.

IBM scientists first to differentiate the chemical bonds in individual molecules using AFM

IBM has announced that its scientists have been able to differentiate the chemical bonds in individual molecules for the first time via a technique called non-contact atomic force microscopy (AFM). The breakthrough has significant implications for the technology world. According to IBM, the breakthrough will help push the exploration of using molecules and atoms at a smaller scale and can be an important step for studying graphene devices.

Graphene devices are being studied as potential replacements for existing technologies used for microchips. Graphene is predicted to eventually have applications in high-bandwidth wireless communications and electronic displays. Researchers at IBM have been able to image the bond order and length of individual carbon-carbon bonds in C60. C60 is also known as a buckyball thanks to its football shape and to planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons resembling small flakes of graphene.

IBM notes that individual bonds between carbon atoms in these molecules differ slightly and subtly in length and strength. Those subtle differences in the length and strength of bonds between carbon atoms are responsible for the important chemical, electronic, and optical properties of such molecules. IBM’s breakthrough marks the first time the differences in those individual bonds were detected in both individual molecules and individual bonds.

The IBM scientist’s discovery also shines light on potential new areas of research, including study of the relaxation of bonds around defects in graphene and the changing of bonds in chemical reactions and in excited states. The IBM scientists used an atomic force microscope with a tip that ended with a single carbon monoxide molecule. The tip of that atomic force microscope oscillates with an amplitude above the sample to measure the forces between the tip and sample such as a molecule, and creates an image. The technique made it possible to distinguish individual bonds that differ by only three picometers, which is one-hundredth of an atom’s diameter.

BBM term makes its way into latest Collins English Dictionary

If you own a Blackberry, then hearing the word “BBM” probably conjures the thought of RIM’s Blackberry Messenger. However it seems that the term has become so synonymous with Blackberry Messenger that the Collins English Dictionary has been updated to include the term. According to T.A. McCann, the Vice President of BBM and Social Communities at RIM, “The inclusion of BBM in the Collins English dictionary recognizes its status as one of the world’s most popular mobile social networks. In recent years, the term ‘BBM’ has transcended its technological origins to become a brand that is part of the everyday language of millions of people all over the world. The service itself continues to evolve, with ‘BBMers’ able to share content, create groups and even post status updates to other social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter directly from the BBM app. We’re honoured that a word used daily by millions of our customers has been officially welcomed into the English language.” Pretty cool, huh?
