iPhone 5 pre-orders now open

The iPhone 5 has gone up for preorder, though be prepared for a potential struggle as eager early-adopters attempt to get their order in for September 21 delivery. In the US, the official Apple Store is offering preorders, as well as carriers Verizon, AT&T and Sprint. Getting in as early as you can is generally a good idea with Apple product pre-orders, as stock usually gets constrained shortly after sales begin.

All four stores are offering the same prices, unsurprisingly, with the 16GB iPhone 5 coming in at $199 with a new, two-year agreement. If you want the 32GB model it’s $299, and $399 for the 64GB version. Each is available in black and white.

iPhone 5 hands-on:

Outside the US, preorders in Europe and elsewhere have begun. In the UK, you can buy an iPhone 5 unlocked and SIM-free from Apple’s own store, priced from £529 for the 16GB version. However, at time of publishing, only T-Mobile UK and Orange were accepting preorders, with Vodafone and O2 merely asking potential customers to pre-register for when preorders go live. Update: Vodafone preorders now live.

If you want 4G LTE in the UK, you’ll have to opt for T-Mo or Orange, and then be alerted when the EE 4G network launches. That will require a new price plan, a new contract, and a new nano-SIM, though pricing for the LTE service hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Those not wanting to preorder today can get in line for the in-store sales, which kick off September 21. For more on the iPhone, check out our full hands-on

Helium-Filled Hard Disks: Less Drag, More Storage [Guts]

Western Digital is planning to launch a range of helium-filled hard drives. Not to make them lighter or higher-pitched, though: with a density one-seventh that of air, the gas reduces internal drag, in turn boosting performance. More »

Panasonic video reveals Lumix GH3 Micro Four Thirds camera: 16MP, magnesium alloy, 60p video

Panasonic video reveals GH3 mirrorless Micro Four Thirds camera

Though the GH3 has yet to be formally introduced to the world, a video has just appeared on an official Panasonic YouTube channel that has either been posted accidentally or is deliberately intended to build hype in the run-up to Photokina. It mainly shows off the GH3 in a range of picturesque shooting situations, but the clip also spills a few key specs, including the presence of a 16-megapixel sensor, a new version of Panny’s Venus Engine processor, a splash- and dust-proof magnesium alloy build and high-definition filming at up to 72Mbps and 60p — although it’s not clear if it handles full 1080 at that high frame-rate. We also see a a flip-out LCD that looks much the same as the GH2‘s, an f/2.8 12-35mm lens attached instead of the 14-42mm or 14-140mm glass that came bundled with that predecessor, and so far only evidence of a traditional black color scheme. Click onwards for the video!

Update: …and just like that, the video has vanished.

You Can Now Pre-Order The iPhone 5

iPhone 5

Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 are now live via Apple’s website. We’ve found that the fastest way to order one is through the Apple Store App. As a reminder, the iPhone 5 is $199 on contract for the 16GB version, the 32GB model is $299, and for those with large media libraries, the $399 version is 64GB. An unlocked version is coming to the U.S. a little later on, for $649, $749, and $849, respectively.

As usual, Apple provides a tool for checking upgrade eligibility with your respective carrier, and you can order a device set up with Sprint, AT&T or Verizon. So go get it, but expect delays, because usually Apple’s store goes down and has all kinds of issues keeping up with demand when this type of shizz goes down.

UPDATE: Many are flowing through the iOS Apple Store app as pointed out by Matthew Panzarino, Justin Ezarik and others. Some are reporting success with Verizon and Sprint. One person pointed out that they had to change their AT&T billing address since that’s what Apple uses for shipping. The AT&T site appears to be having troubles handling the load.

According to The Next Web, the ship time has already jumped ahead one week, which means that units moved blazingly fast.

Brain implant restores decision-making process in monkeys

The brain is one muscle that still holds plenty of mysteries for the medical world, as there is still so much more to discover about it. Brain injuries can be difficult to heal, while some diseases that strike the brain, too, have yet to see a cure coming. Having said that, researchers might have something in their bags that could be a major step in recovering specific brain functions in sufferers of brain disease and injuries after managing to restore the decision-making processes in monkeys successfully through an implant.

This particular prosthetic device is said to be able to restore the decision-making process in people who actually have reduced capacity because of brain disease or injury, assuming the model used in monkey trials were to be developed further. It does lead to one interesting question – does this mean that a mind control device is not too far off in the future? Now that would definitely be a scary thought, don’t you think so? On the other hand, I sure hope that such a device will also be able to help motivate me to do certain chores that I know need doing, but have always procrastinated such as ironing the pile of clothes in the basement.

Either way, it is all serious business here with the brain implant, so do not expect any monkeying around.

Nose-like sensor array to combat cancer?

Cancer, a disease that used to be extremely rare and was deemed to be a death sentence by many, has seen advances in medical science that helped increase survival rates by leaps and bounds. Here we are with a team of chemists that has Vincent Rotello at the helm at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, working on a rapid, sensitive method of detecting microscopic levels across many different metastatic cell types in living tissue. To put it in a nutshell, this sensor array system of gold nanoparticles and proteins will work in tandem so that it can “smell” different cancer , similar to how our noses work and help us identify and remember different kinds of odors.

This chemical nose idea is not new, but it is a branch in the medical and scientific world that definitely deserves more than just a passing glance. In fact, it is sensitive enough to differentiate between normal cells and cancerous ones. As Rotello explained, “With this tool, we can now actually detect and identify metastasized tumor cells in living animal tissue rapidly and effectively using the ‘nose’ strategy. We were the first group to use this approach in cells, which is relatively straightforward. Now we’ve done it in tissues and organs, which are very much more complex. With this advance, we’re much closer to the promise of a general diagnostic test.”

I sure hope that the electronic nose sensor array is sensitive and affordable enough to see action in countries worldwide, without costing a bomb. Generally speaking, every one has a right to live and be given an equal chance at survival, don’t you think so?

Huawei’s MediaPad7 Lite clears FCC, will soon trek to Europe

Huawei Media pad

Now that Huawei has shepherded its MediaPad 7 Lite through the FCCs corridors to ensure its WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and HSPDA 3G radios all conform, the tab is set to travel. The 7-incher wields a 1024 x 600 IPS display, 1.2GHz Cortex A8 processor, 8GB of storage (32GB with optional microSD), 1GB of RAM, 4,100mAh battery and 3.2 / .3-megapixel back / front cameras. Huawei said it would ship across Asia and Eastern Europe to start with, then land in Germany by October with a price of 249 euros ($315). The slate might have a tough row to hoe against similar competition, considering its tame processor, but maybe that newly stamped cellular radio will tip the balance for road warriors.

HTC One X+ hits the FCC

Look at what we have here, ladies and gentlemen – the HTC One X+ which has arrived at the FCC, along the way revealing most of its glory underneath the hood. We are looking at a quad-core Tegra 3 processor here alongside the NVIDIA Tegra 3 (PM63100) chipset in tow. Not only that, this particular visit to the FCC did reveal support for AT&T’s LTE bands, translating to a shameless fact that you ought to take note of – it will arrive on AT&T’s shelves, and hopefully soon, too, as that is more often than not the path that most devices take after being sent to the FCC for inspection.

We are looking at the very real possibility of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean shipping with the HTC One X+ right out of the box, although having a 1800mAh battery might seem to make it rather underpowered compared to its peers, in addition to having just 1GB RAM (while this is the norm, the Galaxy S3 in the US carries double that amount). Still, will you be picking up HTC’s newest flagship when it finally arrives?

Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 software update coming, fixes No SIM error

If you happen to be a proud owner of the Samsung Galaxy S3 while being a Verizon Wireless subscriber, then you might want to check out what is deemed to be the first software update for this particular smartphone. Do not expect the software experience to change by leaps and bounds, but rather, it ought to be categorized under the “incremental update” segment. There is no Jelly Bean in this update so that means your Galaxy S3 will still rock on to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, albeit nudging the version number to touch I535VRALG7.

Just what would software update version I535VRALG7 bring to the fore? The main benefit would be kissing the “No SIM” error message goodbye. This particular error have been plaguing select folks for some time already, never mind that they have already changed their SIM for a new one for the umpteenth time. Other improvements include better stability and connectivity with Back Up Assistant, support for viewing the Guided Tour video’s over the cellular network, improved data connectivity when using SBeam, and making sure no more NFC tagging issues remain.

The update will weigh in at 30.7MB, although there is no concrete release date just yet.
