iPhone 5 cannot handle voice and LTE data on CDMA networks simultaneously

The best iPhone yet, announced early yesterday morning, is unable to handle simultaneous voice and LTE data on CDMA networks as confirmed by Apple. This would definitely help some people come to a decision as to which carrier will they purchase their iPhone 5, although I do admit that for the extremely casual phone user, it does not matter that much since you will most probably be holding the phone to your ear while carrying out a conversation so there is no need to worry about your data path being “blocked”, so to speak. Power users might be peeved at this development though, as many a time you might tether your iPhone 5 and an incoming call comes, breaking whatever data connection you were enjoying previously.

According to Apple spokesperson Natalie Harrison, it is “not yet possible” to perform side-by-side CDMA voice and LTE data on a “single-radio” design that is found in the iPhone 5. Do you think that this is because Apple wanted to ensure the hardware differences are kept to the bare minimum between CDMA and GSM users? This would rule Verizon and Sprint out of the big four telcos in the US, meaning you have just AT&T and an unlocked iPhone 5 on T-Mobile to experience simultaneous voice and LTE data.

Tesla Supercharger network has solar panels

When it comes to electric vehicles, you do not simply drive up to a gas station and “fill ‘er up”, so to speak, as there is this rather lengthy charging process that you need to go through in the first place. Well, Tesla Motors might have come across a rather innovative approach in the form of the Tesla Supercharger network. It should be more than just a simple charging post with a plug, where CEO Elon Musk recently touched on the system in a rather brief manner, more or less guaranteeing that folks who see it will be bowled over by its awesomeness.

There will also be some sort of battery swapping capability being introduced into the Supercharger network, and battery swapping is a controversial concept in the electric vehicle community. No idea on whether it will come for every pack size or not, as the Tesla Model S arrives with either a 40-, 60- or 85-kWh pack, but I am quite sure that the nitty gritty will be ironed out eventually.

Solar panels, too, will play their role here as we could be looking at the possibility of rooftop solar storage systems. Are you looking forward to what Tesla has in store for the electric vehicle future?

Wal-Mart offers iPhone 5 pre-orders for the first time

I am not quite sure about you, but did you not think it strange that Wal-Mart has never offered pre-orders for the iPhone in the past? I guess things do change over the years after all, with Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, announced that they will be taking in pre-orders for the newly introduced iPhone 5 for the first time in their history, in addition to offering discounts on the device in order to maintain their reputation as a company that sells value-for-money products.

You can place your pre-order at 8 a.m. from September 14th onwards at US stores, according to Sarah Spencer, a spokeswoman for the Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer. Wal-Mart’s Apple iPhone 5 will be cherry picked for $189.97 with a two-year contract, making it slightly more affordable than the $199 price point that was announced by Apple. The previous generation iPhone 4S will also receive a price cut, while the iPhone 4 is going cheap at just $0.97 with a two- year contract. Other pre-orders from different carriers will also happen on September 14th, although some of them open the floodgates at midnight.

Facebook’s latest update to BlackBerry app brings improved notifications and reminders

Facebook's latest update to BlackBerry app brings improved notifications and reminders

Worry not, BlackBerry folk. Facebook hasn’t completely forgotten about you. Earlier today, The Official BlackBerry Blog let it be known that Zuckerberg’s social network had pushed out version 3.2 of its friendly application on the platform. With the new features bundled in this release, the Facebook app should make it easier to keep up with your internet-based interactions, giving you the ability to finally sync birthday reminders (and other notifications) with the native BlackBerry calendar. That’s not it, however, events have also been improved and will now allow you to receive alerts, post messages and check out guest profiles — you know, in case you’re feeling extra creepy nosey. We’re not seeing Facebook’s refreshed goods show up in BlackBerry App World just yet, though it shouldn’t be too long before it makes an appearance and can be downloaded to your device.

Raytheon JLENS swarm boat weapon touted

Raytheon, one of the active defense companies out there that have seem to made their fair share of waves in the news recently, has touted the successful testing of their Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System (JLENS) against naval swarm boats sometime in the middle of this year. The JLENS’ ability to target swarm boats in the Great Salt Lake were put to a drill, and it passed the test with flying colors, using the radar’s ability to track multiple fast and high speed vessels while giving a ship commander the situational awareness of all possible threats which he might face in the open seas.

The JLENS system is comprised of a couple of aerostats which can float up to 10,000 feet off the ground, delivering radar and communication capabilities so that one has a bird’s eye view on over-the-horizon threats, while delivering details and information to a gamut of weapons systems. When will JLENS be able to see action on the battlefield? It is rather hard to tell, but I do wonder what kind of defense mechanisms that JLENS has against attacks from missiles and RPGs.

Olympus XZ-2 leak spotted

Avid shutterbugs would definitely know that this year’s Photokina is right around the corner, so you can bet your bottom hard earned dollar that rumors of upcoming digital cameras and camera accessories will begin to make their journey to the Internet, carried over by curious seekers who feel better that they have a pulse on what’s to come in the digital imaging industry. Well, the Olympus XZ-2 is one of the leaked digital cameras, and it is a no-brainer to say that this will continue from where the Olympus XZ-1 point and shoot camera left off.

This new model does seem to share many of its predecessor’s design DNA, except for a fake leather grip as well as the inclusion of a toggle switch that will need some explanation upon its announcement. It does seem as though Olympus has positioned the XZ-2 to be a digital camera for outdoorsmen, as it will have an underwater case accessory as well as a molded cowhide cover. Patience should be able to reveal all there is to know about the Olympus XZ-2 in due time.

RISR: The App/Sensor That Reads Body Language for You

You’ve probably wanted at some point in time to be able to fully engage your date or a client. Here’s another tool to help you accomplish your goal. RISR is a “sensor web” that will help you get the most out of each conversation.

RISR sensor web mirror

RISR is a sensor web that connects to your cellphone and scans it for body language cues. I guess this kind of thing should be pretty useful for some sufferers of autism spectrum disorder, as some have trouble with this. RISR vibrates on your body, telling it how to move to ensure a maximal engagement. Most people do this subconsciously, mirroring the position of the people they talk to. If that all doesn’t make too much sense to you, watch the video below for a demo:

The firm behind RISR has just announced this tech, and they will also help you with consultations to get the most out of your RISR vest. It will be deployed this fall.
