Rogers boosting its LTE coverage in Canada, will cover 10 new cities by October 1st

We’re sure it’s just coincidence, but on the same day a certain new LTE phone was revealed, Rogers announced the expansion of its 4G network in Canada. By October 1st, the carrier will have switched on its high-speed network in Kingston, Edmonton, Quebec City, Oakville, Burlington, London, Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Barrie. That’s not quite the end of it either, as the plan is to feed 60 percent of the country’s inhabitants the same 4G nourishment by the end of the year, and even more in 2013. With so many new LTE-capable devices soon finding their way into the hands of data-hungry Canadians, all that remains is the important decision of choosing your latest pocket-filler.

Woz weighs in on iPhone 5

Many people are excited for the iPhone 5, but a day after the reveal of the new device, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has shared his early opinion. Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg, Wozniak said that he’s “always excited” when a new iPhone is revealed, and there’s one thing in particular he’s hoping for with this latest iteration. Specifically, Wozniak hopes that the iPhone 5 will deliver better photo quality over the iPhone 4.

“I am always excited about every iPhone product because there are always good advances,” Wozniak said. “A better quality on the pictures will mean a lot, because when I show people pictures on my iPhone 4 and my Galaxy S III, they always say the Galaxy S III, or even the Motorola Razr, pictures look better.” Wozniak also said that he thinks Apple has taken some “very important steps” with the latest iPhone, but will wait until he’s actually able to test the iPhone 5 himself before making his final judgment on the new device.

The iPhone 4 has a rear-facing 5 megapixel camera, whereas the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S III, and Motorola DROID RAZR all have an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera. The iPhone 5 comes with a number of improvements over its predecessors, including a larger 4-inch screen (as opposed to the 3.5-inch screen on the iPhone 4 and 4S), a thinner and more lightweight design, and perhaps most importantly, 4G LTE functionality. It will also come with iOS 6 pre-installed, which boasts a number of new features over iOS 5.

Oh, and for the record, Wozniak also gave his opinion on Apple’s recent patent trial against Samsung. “I hate it,” Wozniak said, presumably bluntly. “I don’t think the decision of California will hold. And I don’t agree with it — very small things I don’t really call that innovative.” Instead of courtroom tussles, Wozniak said he would prefer it if everyone would just agree to share patents, giving companies a pool of technology with which to make the best devices possible. That sounds perfect to us, to tell the truth, but unfortunately, we’re thinking that companies like Apple and Samsung wouldn’t be as receptive to the idea.

Modeling software used to devise optimal wind turbine designs

Wind turbines are usually situated in vast tracts of land, normally in wind farms or places away from the city. This is done because the gale is the strongest in these regions and lets these turbines generate significant amounts of energy. Smaller wind turbines can also be installed in more urbane dwellings but they usually generate tiny outputs.

Researchers are now trying to counter this with the help of a new modeling software. The idea is that there must be such wind turbine designs and positions which could generate greater output when fixed in the urban areas.  (more…)

Nintendo TVii supported by ‘all’ major US and Canadian cable companies, dish services

Nintendo TVii will support “all” cable and dish carriers in the US and Canada, Nintendo director of strategic partnership Zach Fountain told Engadget this afternoon. He said that no major carriers are excluded, and the only requirement for signing up is inputting your cable company’s account information to the Wii U. DVR and TiVO functionality are plugged in similarly, where users input information via web, and services resultantly pop up on the Wii U. Nintendo TVii launches with the Wii U on November 18 in the US and Canada for free, and remains exclusive to North America for the time being.

Burberry London flagship store gets digital makeover

Taking a couple of years for renovation work to be completed, Burberry’s Regent Street store in London, all 44,000 square feet of it, has been digitally integrated seamlessly throughout. We are talking about having full-length screens wrap the store, making you experience a sensory overload as you lose track of when the transition between audio-visual content displays start or stop, no thanks to a clever combination of live-streaming hubs and and mirrors. At certain times, models will walk between video screens, mimicking the “Burberry World Live” experience that was staged in April earlier this year.

Imagine the sight and sound of rain that begins almost silently, where it will gather strength and build up to a crescendo with a cracking thunderstorm as its climax, showing up on all the store’s screens with relevant echoes to boot, even in the fitting rooms. The clever use of radio-frequency identification (RFID) chips that are attached to certain clothes and accessories allows one to approach screens in common areas or within a fitting room, only to be greeted by a video on how that particular fashion item is worn on the catwalk.
