Apple sues A.pl, a Polish grocery site over its name

We are not sure whether to laugh or to cry over the fact that Apple has just filed a lawsuit against a Polish grocery site that simply calls itself, A.pl. Polish news outlet Telepolis reported that Apple will be taking the A.pl name to court because it is extremely close to Cupertino’s company name. What next, are they going to sue apple orchards for growing trees that bear fruit which are extremely close to their logo?

A.pl offers a door-to-door delivery, and its full name is A.PL Internet SA. “.pl” is Poland’s country-wide domain, but I guess that this fact was not taken into consideration by Apple as they requested, nay, demanded that the Polish Patent Office cancel the site’s trademark as the likeness of characters infringes upon Apple’s reputation.

I don’t know about you, but the whole thing reeks of a barrel of rotten apples. What do you think of this situation, has Apple gone too far by being trigger happy with their army of lawyers? One thing is for sure, A.pl is definitely unable to pay Apple a cool one billion dollars in compensation if they were to be found guilty. Apple is starting to sound and look more and more like a bully, bordering on the ridiculous, but this is just a personal observation and not reflective of the site’s viewpoint.

eBay logo redesigned to expand market reach

Consumers’ tastes do change with the times, and it is the onus of the company to keep up with the latest trends – or be the trendsetter instead. Well, eBay seemed to have followed the footsteps of Microsoft by redesigning their eBay logo in order to better reflect marketplace shift. This new eBay logo was unveiled by eBay executive Devin Wenig, hoping to impart the sense that the company is no longer a digital auction house of sorts, but rather, will nudge consumers to see eBay as a full-priced, buy-it-now merchandise entity.

The famous red, blue, yellow and green colors of eBay’s original logo remains, although the letters will be thinner and arranged in a straight line instead of a slightly unaligned approach in the past. Expect the new eBay logo to be introduced across the company’s websites from fall onwards. Wenig said, “The eBay logo is known the world over, so changing it was not a decision made lightly. The time felt right. It’s eBay today: a global online marketplace that offers a cleaner, more contemporary and consistent experience.”

What do you think of the new eBay logo?

Nintendo Wii U expandable memory explained, TiVO hardware not built in

The Nintendo Wii U may only have 8 to 32GB of internal memory, but the company’s taking a decidedly open approach to expanding that memory: add your own. “You can plug in a full-on three terabyte hard drive if you want. I’ll love you as a digital consumer,” Nintendo America CEO and president Reggie Fils-Aime told us during a post-press conference investor Q&A. Much like Sony’s PlayStation 3, the Wii U allows for expansion of memory via USB, whether that memory be Flash or otherwise. Fils-Aime explained that, with the continuously dropping price of memory, there was little reason to offer pricing for the Wii U — available in $300 and $350 — tied to an evolving hardware model.

“The reason we did it that way is that the cost of that type of storage memory is plummeting. What we didn’t want to do is tie a profit model to something that’s gonna rapidly decline over time. We’ll let the consumer buy as much as they want, as cheaply as they want,” Fils-Aime said.

Fils-Aime also confirmed that the Wii U doesn’t have TiVO hardware built into it — functionality will require an existing TiVO box. The same goes for DVR functionality, which Fils-Aime said Nintendo doesn’t want consumers to bear the expense of.

Nissan uses tablet as instrumental panel in new Terra SUV concept car

The new Nissan Terra SUV concept car has something interesting that geeks would definitely fall in love with – this particular ride will rely on a tablet as its instrumental panel, now how about that? From the outside, the Terra SUV does seem to resemble the Nissan Juke although it relies on a trio of electric motors to drive the wheels, while a hydrogen fuel cell stack does the hard work of generating electricity. Good thing the tablet is removable from its place, otherwise there might be some folks with bad intention who could just break into your car just to remove your instrumental panel, er, tablet.

The tablet shows off a speedometer and energy usage when docked, and you can also use the tablet for infotainment purposes during those long and boring rides. Regardless of what you do with the tablet, it will always show off the car’s speed in a side-by-side display format. Just how would you want your SUVs to come in the future?

T-Mobile introduces Tappy, the software testing robot

We live in a world where there are multiple mobile OS, multiple smartphone and tablet vendors and a lot of fragmentation along the software and hardware lines. Naturally, it is hard for every single smartphone or tablet coming out of the factory to be perfect. According to T-Mobile, most of the recent device returns it has witnessed has been due to software glitches which left the customers unsatisfied.

In 2007, the company came up with a novel idea to tackle the problem. A T-Mobile engineer build a robot called ‘Tappy’, or the tap-happy robot. The robot, as the name suggests, is meant to test different phones and tablets before they are offered by T-Mobile. (more…)

Nokia has Windows Phone 7 updates in mind

Earlier this month, there was word that a Windows Phone 7.8 update will be arriving on current generation Nokia Lumias, but so far nothing has been confirmed just yet. Well, it has been revealed to us by Nokia that they will continue to offer Windows Phone 7 updates, as detailed by Boc Ly on Nokia’s official blog, “After introducing the first smartphones in the Nokia Lumia family to be built on Windows Phone 8, there is one message that needs to be made loud and clear: existing Lumia owners also have plenty to look forward to and are definitely not being left behind.”

Right now, there are some current Lumia owners who aren’t too happy that existing Lumia handsets will not be on the receiving end of Windows Phone 8 when it arrives, but at least there is a halfway upgrade in store – that is, Windows Phone 7.8 that will carry with it a bunch of key improvements and new apps. No idea on when the Windows Phone 7.8 updates will arrive though.
