Wii U hits US on November 18 from $299.99 [Update: Europe details]

Nintendo has confirmed that the Wii U will arrive on US shores on Sunday, November 18, 2012. The console – which was priced and dated for the Japanese market earlier today – will be offered in the same two configurations as previously announced, the Basic and Deluxe versions, with the latter coming with Nintendo Land membership. The Basic will be $299.99 while the Deluxe will be $349.99.

Neither will come with a Wiimote controller, however, or a nunchuck. Nintendo believes most of the people interested in the Wii U will already have a Wiimote or two, though there’ll be Wii U branded versions on sale separately for those coming fresh to the platform.

In the Basic set will be the console and GamePad tablet themselves, together with an AC adapter for each, an HDMI cable, and a Wii U sensor bar. The Premium set will get the same, plus 32GB of storage, stands for the console and the GamePad, and a GamePad charging cradle.

Whether those prices are sufficient to capture the holiday shopping season remains to be seen. Check out our hands-on with the Wii U for more details.

Update: Europe will get the Wii U on November 30, with pricing to be announced by individual retailers closer to launch.

Nintendo Wii U pegged for 18th November release in the US

Earlier today we reported that the Nintendo Wii U would be released in Japan on the 8th of December. The good news is that if you thought that the 8th of December released was a bit too late for your liking, well it seems that for those in the US, we can expect the Wii U to launch on the 18th of November, Sunday. Much like the Japan release, the US release will come in two flavors – a basic set and a deluxe set, with the former coming in white and will basically come with just the console and the necessary hardware and a storage capacity of 8GB, while the deluxe version will come in black and additional accessories like the a charging cradle, stands for the GamePad and console and will come with a 32GB HDD. The basic set will be priced at $299.99, while the deluxe set will be priced at $349.99. So, what do you guys think? Are these prices higher/lower than you had expected, and will you be picking one up for yourself?

Nintendo Wii U arrives in the US on Nov 18 in two versions for $300 and $350, Europe on Nov 30

The Nintendo Wii U will launch in the US on Sunday, November 18, Nintendo America president and CEO Reggie Fils-Aime revealed in a New York City press conference this morning. It’ll arrive in Europe on November 30, though no price was given for our friends abroad. Like its Japanese release, the console comes in two varieties: a base level bundle in white with just 8GB of internal memory for $300 and a premium bundle in black with 32GB of internal memory for $350.

Each version contains the console itself, a WiiPad, a charging stand, a play stand, and a stand for the console. The premium version, however, adds a subscription to Nintendo’s Premium Network, which offers various rewards for digital purchases — it also gets a full 32GB of internal memory, which is a pretty major step up over the 8GB model. It’s hard to imagine either having enough internal storage compared with current-gen consoles, but the Wii U’s memory is expandable via USB.

Fils-Aime also said that Wii remotes are getting rebranded for the Wii U, and will be available in retail shops shortly. Check out the official PR and an additional shot of the basic set after the break.

iPod touch enters the fifth generation

Wow, can you believe it? The iPod touch is now in its fifth generation of existence, which is saying something as we do know that Apple takes a slightly different approach to their product line, more often than not using just the same name no matter which generation it is, while their competitors come up with different kinds of names, although lately Samsung has followed Apple in their footsteps with the Galaxy S range. Having said that, just what does the latest iPod touch deliver to the masses? Let us check out whether a dedicated portable media player has a future in the world of smartphones, shall we?

The new iPod touch, just like the iPhone 5, is the thinnest version of the iPod touch to date, where it will share the same display as that on the iPhone 5 – a brilliant 4-inch Retina display, accompanied by a 5 megapixel iSight camera with 1080p HD video recording capability, running on Apple’s beefy A5 chip (which means there is no A6 processor as found on the iPhone 5). Not only that, Apple has also decided to throw in Siri, the intelligent assistant which first debuted on the iPhone 4S, as well as the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 6.

The new iPod touch (5G) will come in pink, yellow, blue, white and silver, black and slate colors, where pre-orders for it will start from September 14th onwards. You will be able to choose from 32GB and 64GB capacities, which will retail for $299 and $399, respectively. Of course, you can make a purchase outright on the Apple Online Store from October onwards. Having said that, the fourth generation iPod touch will still remain available, so Apple has not yet phased that out yet. Has the latest iPod touch impressed you enough to cough up money for it?

Anatomical Barbie Looks Cool But Might Freak Your Kids Out

Koen Hauser gave his subjects the anatomical treatment and his human models couldn’t look any creepier. Now it’s Barbie’s turn.

In the eyes of many kids (mostly girls), she’s the perfect doll. She’s pretty, she’s sexy, and she’s got a hunky boyfriend named Ken. And she’s “human” too – well, sort of.

Anatomical BarbieShe won’t come to life, but artist Jason Freeny shows everyone that she’s got a skeleton and intestines just like you and I do. But is it just me, or is anatomical Barbie still prettier than the average anatomical human?

Anatomical Barbie1

This hand-sculpted model of Barbie with her insides showing on one side is Freeny’s latest handiwork and it looks pretty awesome, don’t you think? Prints available in his shop.

Phil Schiller explains why there is no NFC in the iPhone 5

Before the iPhone 5 was officially revealed, several photos of a component within the phone had many wondering if it was an NFC chip. It was later concluded that it wasn’t, and we guess with the iPhone 5 now official, NFC is most definitely not one of the new features of the phone. However we’re sure that there are users out there who believe that NFC could be incredibly useful and might have been disappointed by the news, but here’s an explanation by Apple’s Phil Schiller (via AllThingsD) that will hopefully answer your questions.

According to Schiller, “Passbook does the kinds of things customers need today,” and does not require additional hardware and works without existing merchant payment systems. Given that Passbook stores all sorts of things, such as loyalty and gift cards, boarding passes and etc., many believed that NFC was a great complement to Passbook which might have prompted the earlier speculation. Since Passbook is a feature of iOS 6 that has yet to be released, we can’t say for sure that it will work out the way Apple intended, but what do you guys think? Should Apple have included NFC to complement Passbook’s capabilities?

Bose unveils SoundLink Air and SoundLink Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II

If you were in the market for a new set of speakers, Bose has unveiled two – the SoundLink Air and the SoundLink Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II. The SoundLink Air is aimed at iOS users exclusively and will support the AirPlay standard. This allows users to stream music over WiFi connections to the speaker without the need to plug it in or for cables. Bose has also revealed that multiple SoundLink Air devices can be linked together so that users can stream music through the entire house or area. Priced at $350, users also have the option to purchase a rechargeable battery for $90.

Next is the SoundLink Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II which has been designed for both iOS and Android devices. As its name has implied, this speaker will pair with your mobile device via Bluetooth and is reportedly small and light enough to carry with one hand and should fit nicely into a backpack. The Bose SoundLink Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II is priced at $300, although if you want a fancier version with a leather option, it will cost you $350 instead.

Acer ditches Alibaba at the smartphone altar

We have word that Acer has called off a smartphone launch with Alibaba at the eleventh hour, with Alibaba (the biggest e-commerce company in China that did mull over purchasing a controlling stake in Yahoo) citing that pressure from Google on Acer was the main reason behind being ditched. Acer and Alibaba’s cloud computing unit originally intended to roll out the Acer CloudMobile A800 smartphone that ran on Alibaba’s very own mobile operating system known as Aliyun, but journalists who turned up for the event were prevented from entering the venue, with an Alibaba Cloud Computing official claiming the launch was canceled due to internal reasons.

A statement from Alibaba later mentioned the following, “Our partner received notification from Google that if the new product launch with Aliyun went ahead, Google would terminate Android product cooperation and related technical authorization with Acer.” There was no response from Google to this allegation, while Acer’s Shanghai-based spokeswoman Elaine Cao remained silent. What do you think of the situation?
