Ears-On With Apple’s New EarPods: Better Bass, Better Looks, Just Better

iphone-headphones

Apple’s new EarPods are available to order today in the Apple Store, but we were lucky enough to get a pair here at TechCrunch for some early testing. The new design is definitely eye-catching, but does performance live up to the looks? Read on to find out.

The Good

These definitely sound better than those earbuds you got with your iPhone 4S and immediately put into a drawer, never to think about again. The sound is much richer and more like what you’d get from Apple’s In-Ear Headphones, though without the sound isolation since they don’t form a seal in your ear canal. That is actually better for general commuting use, however, since it means you can still hear traffic and other environmental sounds.

One thing everyone will probably appreciate is much better bass performance. It’s not overpowering, which you might get on a pair of Monster Beats, and that’s a good thing. You also get better stereo effects, all resulting in a much more immersive listening experience.

Comfort is pretty much a toss-up between these and the last. They do feel a little less likely to fall out of your ears or shift around while you’re walking and wearing, though it also takes a little bit longer to get them seated correctly in the first place.

Smaller openings that don’t use a huge grill alone should increase element resistance and make them more durable, and Apple claims overall they’re designed to better take a beating, and early impressions bear that out.

The Bad

It would be hard for the new EarPods to be worse at anything than the earbuds they replace, if only because those were so bad in every regard. However, one thing I did notice was that the controls/mic pod felt a little bit flimsy and light, which could be a concern for long-term wear, but that could admittedly also just be a mistaken impression.

Conclusions

The new EarPods are better than the old ones, and they come free with new iPhones and iPods, so you can’t really complain. Plus, at $29, while I’m not sure they rival some of my favorites like the Bowers & Wilkins C5 or Klipsch S4i, they sound pretty good. Definitely a better buy than the lackluster In-Ear Headphones with Mic for $79 as a standalone purchase.

Missouri Legislature Overrides Veto Of Birth Control Bill

The Republican-controlled Missouri State Legislature voted on Wednesday to override Gov. Jay Nixon’s (D) veto of a bill that would allow employers and insurers to refuse to cover birth control, abortion or sterilization for moral reasons.

The State Senate overrode the governor’s veto by a vote of of 26-6, while the House, which needed 109 votes to override, barely did so, by a vote of 109-45.

Nixon said at a press conference in July that he vetoed the bill because “we want families making these decisions, not insurance companies.”

iOS 6 GM seed lands shortly after iPhone 5 announcement

One of the biggest upgrades found in the iPhone 5 is the jump to iOS 6, and though developers have been working with iOS 6 for a while now, today they’re getting their first look at the finished product. The iOS 6 Golden Master key has been unleashed, allowing developers to test out their apps and make any last minute changes before the consumer version of iOS 6 launches on September 19. iOS 6 is launching just a couple of days before the iPhone 5 arrives, which is scheduled for September 21.

That gives developers just under a week to test out their apps in the final version of iOS 6 before the newest version of Apple’s mobile operating system becomes available to everyone. Developers can download the iOS 6 GM seed for iPad, iPhones going back as far as the 3GS, and 4th generation iPod Touches. In addition, developers can also now download the Xcode 4.5 GM seed, so you’ve got everything you need to make sure your apps compatible with both iOS 6 and the iPhone 5′s new, bigger screen.

As we were told earlier today, iOS 6 will be compatible with the new iPad and iPad 2; iPhone 3GS, 4, and 4S; and 4th generation iPod Touch while coming pre-installed on both the iPhone 5 and new iPod Touch. Apple has opened the floodgates too, inviting developers to start submitting their apps for iOS 6 beginning today. While that’s pretty exciting, you should still probably take some time to test your app with the iOS 6 GM and the Xcode 4.5 GM seeds first, just to make sure your app doesn’t get rejected.

iOS 6 brings a number of enhancements with it, including Apple’s all new Maps app. There’s also Facebook integration to take advantage of, and Siri has been given a bit of an update in iOS 6 as well. With the final release of iOS 6 right around the corner, it’s certainly an exciting time to be an iDevice owner. The iPhone 5 is up for pre-order on September 14, and be sure to take a look at our Apple portal for all of the news from the day!

Michael Vick, Ryan Tannehill Among Worst Performances Of NFL Week 1

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White was so disappointed with his performance in Week 1 that he felt compelled to apologize on Twitter to anyone who had been relying on him in fantasy football. Despite having six catches for 87 yards, White failed to find the endzone as the Falcons offense hung 40 points on the Kansas City Chiefs in an impressive Week 1 win.

Clearly, White holds himself to a high standard. If he considers his outing a disappointment, then how is anyone who participated in the shoving match between the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles supposed to feel about what they accomplished? No Browns player managed half as many receiving yards as White. On the other sideline, only the Eagles’ top passing option put up marginally better numbers (and managed a score).

Not surprisingly, the Browns-Eagles matchup featured two of the lousiest quarterback performances in Week 1. Michael Vick and rookie Brandon Weeden each had four interceptions as Philadelphia barely escaped with an ugly 17-16 win. Under pressure and out of sorts, Vick became the first Eagles quarterback with four interceptions in season opener since 1941, per ESPN Stats & Info. Weeden looked even worse, only tallying 118 passing yards on 12-of-35 passing, resulting in a measly quarterback rating of 5.1.

“Hotel Transylvania,” the next hair-raising, knee-slapping, and shoe-losing animated comedy?

Republicans Push Back Against Notion Of A ‘Lehman Moment’ For Mitt Romney

WASHINGTON – Influential Republicans on Wednesday pushed back against the overwhelming perception in the press that Mitt Romney made a significant error in his response to attacks on U.S. embassies in Egypt and Libya on Tuesday.

“Mitt Romney’s a challenger, and he has every right to criticize that horrendous statement made by our embassy in Egypt. In fact, failure to criticize it would be an omission,” Ari Fleischer, a former White House press secretary for President George W. Bush, said in a phone interview with The Huffington Post.

“That statement was so horrendously misguided,” Fleischer said, referring to a statement by the U.S. embassy in Cairo on Tuesday. The embassy issued the statement before protesters breached its walls and tore down the U.S. flag, but said after the attack that it still stood.

10 Hilarious Photoshops Of Obama’s Awkward Bear Hug

Over the weekend, President Barack Obama was campaigning in Florida when he casually strolled into (meaning walked in followed by teams of Secret Service agents, some of whom were probably hiding in air vents with sniper rifles) a pizza restaurant when you-know-what happened.

Pretty damn awkward, especially when you take into account that this is exactly the kind of moment that the Internet loves to turn into some kind of stupid, inane meme. You know, exactly like we’re about to do right now.
Here are 10 vastly improved versions of Obama’s awkward bear hug incident.

Obama Responds To Libya Criticism: Romney Tends ‘To Shoot First And Aim Later’

President Barack Obama responded to Mitt Romney’s charge that the White House mishandled its response to the embassy attacks in Egypt and Libya by accusing his challenger of having a tendency to “shoot first and aim later.”

“There’s a broader lesson to be learned here: Governor Romney seems to have a tendency to shoot first and aim later, and as president, one of the things I’ve learned is you can’t do that,” Obama said in an interview with CBS News on Wednesday. “It’s important for you to make sure that the statements that you make are backed up by the facts and that you’ve thought through the ramifications before you make them.”

When asked if he found Romney’s statement “irresponsible,” Obama responded, “I’ll let the American people judge that.”
