Funny Pothole Caricatures Push Russian Politicians to Do Their Jobs

Where I’m from, most politicians only spring into action when it’s time for re-elections. Other than that, they’re busy plastering their faces on signs and tarpaulins of ongoing projects all around the city while failing to do what they’re really supposed to do: serve.

Apparently, Russian’s politicians do that too. The condition of a lot of roads in Yekaterinburg, Russia was pretty bad and all the potholes were starting to get on people’s nerves. It got so bad that a local blog, URA.RU, took things into their own hands.

Pothole Caricatures

In the dead of night, they tasked Voshkod, an agency, to draw caricatures of the officials’ faces on the pockmarked streets, with their mouths right over the potholes.

And to make a long story short, their stunt actually worked, with work on the roads beginning shortly afterwards. Now this is street activism.

This Nook Color Is Your Showing-Tim-Cook-Up Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

Earlier today, while Tim Cook was introducing the new greatest gadget ever, he got a little rowdy. Speaking about internet usage, he claimed that iPads account for “92% of tablet traffic.” Cook surmised that it was because nobody actually uses Android tablets: More »

Apple’s New Nano-SIM: Freeing Up Valuable Space Inside The Case

nano-SIM

Apple managed to get a new standard for SIM cards approved by the European Telecommunications Institute (ETSI) back in June, and today we see the result of that effort. The new nano-SIM is 44 percent smaller than existing micro-SIM designs, which may not seem significant in something already so small, but which could ultimately give Apple a lot more to work with.

When it comes to adding more battery or new radios to the iPhone, the key to getting it done is freeing up space taken up by other elements. The nano-SIM does just that, minimizing the key component’s internal footprint, which may help account for why the new iPhone manages to get battery life on par with its predecessor despite a larger screen and LTE built-in.

Once upon a time, there was talk of Apple replacing SIM cards altogether with a built-in solution integrated inextricably into the phone itself. That proposed change met with the ire of carriers according to France Telecom CEO Stéphane Richard, and so Apple went the route of the nano-SIM instead. Eventually, I’d bet Apple will still push for an integrated SIM, since in-case real estate will only become more valuable, not less.

iPod touch refresh gains Siri and color collection

The iPhone 5 may have been the groundbreaking announcement at today’s Apple event, but the iPod Touch is also getting a refresh, and it comes with a number of improvements over the iPod Touch that we’re familiar with. For example, Apple is making some big changes to the camera, with Apple including a new iSight camera on the back of this bad boy. This new camera comes complete with autofocus, LED flash, a 5 megapixel sensor, backside illumination, and a five-element lens.

To top things off, the iPod Touch comes with the same sapphire lens cover that the iPhone 5 is equipped with. The camera on the back support 1080p with image stabilization, while the FaceTime camera on the front can shoot in 720p and makes use of Apple’s facial recognition. The new iPod Touch will come in a variety of different colors – aluminum, black, red, blue, and yellow – and each one will come with a color-coordinated wrist straps that you can attach to the back of your device to keep it secure while using it as a camera.

Finally, in one of the most important announcements during Apple’s presentation, Siri is coming to the iPod Touch. The addition of Siri is bound to move some units this holiday season, so we’re going to go ahead and say that putting Siri on the iPod Touch is a winning idea for Apple. Have a look at our liveblog of Apple’s event for as-it-happens coverage, and also be sure to stop by our Apple portal to find more in-depth posts on Apple’s big announcements.

Apple EarPods introduced as full earbuds refresh

This week at the iPhone 5 event that also played host to several iPod bumps in the line, Apple showed off EarPods, the newest in earbud technology from the company that’s also bringing a big iTunes refresh soon as well. These EarPods are made to “fit for everyone” and are, as Jony Ive says, “designed to direct sound into the ear.” This set of listening devices is set to be offered by Apple as a standalone product but will also be in the package whenever you purchase any of the new devices shown off this week.

The EarPods will be in the package with your new iPhone 5, your iPod touch (refreshed this week), and your iPod nano (also refreshed this week.) EarPods will be available this week as a standalone product and will be packaged with each of the devices named as they’re revealed in stores across the planet in the coming weeks. Check our Apple portal for more information on what was revealed this week and stay tuned to the SlashGear main news portal for more on all things Apple related and otherwise!

Apple Fixes Its Headphone Problem With New EarPods, Shipping Today

EarPods

Apple redesigned its signature headphones today, with a new geometry that’s made to better fit the ear. They don’t seal like in-ear phones, however, and have three ports designed to maximize air flow through the design.

A port in the back is aimed at delivering better mid-tones, and there’s one in the stem and the primary one for delivering sound to the inside of your ear. It’s all aimed at delivering the best sound possible.

These ship today on their own, and are included with new iPods and iPhone. They’ve gotta be better than the existing ones, but I’ll reserve judgement about how much better until I get actual ears-on experience.

New iPod Touch confirmed with 4-inch Retina Display, dual-core A5 processor

Apple had a few hardware surprises up their sleeves today and one of those is the all new iPod Touch. Yup, Apple just announced another iPod which you can call the 5th generation iPod, or the new iPod Touch. The new and improved model is receiving plenty of love the iPhone 5 did with the same 4-inch Retina Display and brushed aluminum design. More details after the break.

Gone is the chrome finish that will get scratched up within days, and instead the all new iPod has a brushed aluminum finish just like the iPhone 5. Then they’ve added the same impressive 4-inch HD Retina display for stunning visuals while you enjoy all of the latest games. Here’s the rundown:

The brand new iPod Touch is looking rather impressive dressed in white. They’re rocking out to some Foo Fighters and we’re loving the new camera. This is the thinnest iPod Touch yet being just 6.1mm thick. It’s also the lightest weighing 88 grams while still managing to get improved in all areas. We have the larger 4-inch Retina 326 ppi display, dual-core A5 processor, and of course the camera. The new iPod Touch’s 5 megapixel camera (with flash) has tons of improvements, is 25% thinner, and will have most of the features like panoramic mode and dynamic low light modes just like the iPhone 5. Oh and the new Touch’s camera can now shoot full 1080p HD video. Then the 720p Facetime front shooter is clearly present.

Apple managed to fit all of this into a super sleek iPod Touch while still boosting battery life. You can expect over 40 hours of music and 8 hours of continuous video. Those might not be amazing results but with all the boosts this device received, we’ll welcome those usage results. Whoa! The new iPod Touch has Siri but more on that is coming shortly. iPod shuffle updated with much-needed new hues

iPod shuffle updated with much needed new hues

It’s been quite a while since the Shuffle has been updated, but we’re happy to say that Apple has shown the tiniest of its music players some much needed love. There’s only one change here, but it’s by far the most important — colors! Now the tiny PMPs will match their revamped “iTouch” brothers. Just, you know, with much less functionality. There’s even a soft and subtle pink model for all those ladies out there that love being pandered to and a Project (RED) version for the socially conscious. The latest generation of the shuffle should start shipping today.
