If you’d wanted to shop Ubuntu One’s Music Store in the past, you had to use a plugin through an app like Banshee or Rhythmbox. Not very convenient, we’d say. Someone must have been listening up in Canonical’s cloud, as Ubuntu One just brought its 7digital-based store to the web and mobile devices. Apart from widening the software scope, it’s billed as a more direct interface to shop for tunes and send them to Ubuntu One’s cloud for either streaming or syncing. Don’t think that’s enough of a perk? Early purchasers get half a year’s worth of Ubuntu One Music Streaming for free — as strong an incentive as any to dip a toe into the (music) stream before jumping in.

Just when you thought that the Samsung Galaxy Note or its successor were the largest phones ever put in your pocket, think again. Some enterprising folks over at XDA Developers have decided to make sure your pockets are ripped to a larger size than ever before, thanks to the introduction of voice calling capability in the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Granted, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is not the newest tablet in the market, and neither does it fall under the phablet category, but there is nothing quite like a little bit of tweaking on the software front to open up new frontiers never imagined before.
Just as how there are many roads to Rome, there are also several installation methods where you can choose from, with each of these being based on a different ROM. As long as your Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 runs on the newest stock Ice Cream Sandwich ROM and derivatives, CyanogenMod9, or CyanogenMod 10, you’re good to go. There are some issues though, although these were reported not to happen too often, that is, it is best to run on 2G in order to enjoy hassle-free calls. Restrictions are also in place, since this mod applies only for folks who own the 3G-enabled Galaxy Tab 10.1, otherwise known as the GT-P7500.

At the end of last year, we do know that more than 700,000 Android-powered devices were activated on a daily basis, and that had certainly helped Google achieve the 500 million activation mark for Android as of today. After all, who can resist names such as Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean, considering how those tend to “activate” your sweet tooth as well?
Of course, the daily number of activations has nearly doubled as well since December last year, where we are looking at approximately 1.3 million smartphones and/or tablets activated each time the earth makes a full revolution around the sun. Will the number of Android activations actually reduce after Apple’s alleged iPhone 5 announcement happens later today? Perhaps, but I guess there will always be fans on either camp who will always do their best to increase the respective user base in the long run. Will you be picking up an Android smartphone in the near future?

Ben Heck is well known as a modder extraordinaire, and this time he doesn’t let anyone down by cobbling together a pocket PC from an array of harvested parts, including a chatpad from an Xbox 360 controller.
The BASIC pocket PC uses the aforementioned chatpad, an Arduino Uno and a Hitachi LCD display. The handheld computer runs an appropriately tiny version of the BASIC programming language called TinyBASIC. Thanks to its built-in interface, this Franken-computer allows Ben to control real-world objects – for example, Heck uses it to control a servo-operated ghost on a pinball playing field.
Check out the full show where Heck shows you how he built the device and to see what it can do.
The whole thing is pretty neat, but you’ll need to brush up on your electronics skills if you want to be able to make one of these for yourself.

With literally hundreds of laptops available on the market, searching for one can be daunting for many users. We want all it all: high performance, lots of storage, small, light and low-priced. Of course, it’s not that easy in the real world, or you would not be reading this. Whether the laptop is for yourself or is a gift for someone else, the most important part is to try understanding what the actual usage of the computer will be. Gaming, multimedia and basic productivity are tasks that can be accomplished by very different machines. We can’t have it all, but we can certainly find the most appropriate laptop to get the job done, so here are a few pointers from the Ubergizmo team. (more…)
