Sony NEX-VG900 Handycam camcorder

Sony scores another first with their Sony NEX-VG900 Handycam camcorder, where it is touted to be the first 35mm full-frame Handycam camcorder in the world. Make no mistake about it, the Sony NEX-VG900 Handycam will be part of the interchangeable lens video camera family, hence I guess the cliche comes in handy here – whatever you shoot is only as good as your imagination, as the hardware has progressed to such an extent. Well, let us check out just what the Sony NEX-VG900 Handycam camcorder is capable of right after the jump, shall we not?

Touted to be the “world’s first consumer 35mm full-frame interchangeable lens camcorder”, the new NEX-VG900 Handycam camcorder will enable demanding cinematographers to have the kind of control and flexibility that they require in order to flesh out their creative vision. Sporting a resolution count of 24.3 effective megapixels, it comes with an Exmor CMOS sensor that is said to be approximately 40 times larger than its equivalent in standard consumer camcorders, and more than double that of the APS-C sensor found in other interchangeable lens Handycam models.

Capable of capturing full-frame, 24 megapixel still photos, it will also deliver RAW format support, now how about that? This delivers all the post-processing flexibility and quality expected from a pro-class DSLR camera, except that this is a camcorder that we are talking about here. As for the sensor, it also lets one create distinctive ‘bokeh’ (defocus) effects; experience high sensitivity for extremely clear, low-noise images; and effortless reproduction of smooth, true tonal gradation.

You might just end up being the resident movie maker in your family as you spend more and more time mastering the Sony NEX-VG900 Handycam camcorder, and we cannot blame you for that.

And last but not least, the pricing surrounding the Sony Handycam NEX-VG900 35mm full-frame camcorder. If you want just the body only with a LA-EA3 adaptor will arrive later this November, it will cost you a whopping $3,300. I guess that would mean you have just a couple of months or so to save up for one of these puppies, no?

Amazon Tries Its Hand At More Original (And Crowdsourced) Content With Blackburn Burrow Digital Comic

blackburn burrow

Amazon, like its competitor Netflix, has been making some moves to increase the amount of exclusive, original content under its brand. Today it took one more step in that direction with the news that Amazon Studios will be launching its first self-commissioned digital comic, a version of the Blackburn Burrow Civil War story. The first copy is now free in the Kindle store.

Originally a screenplay from Jay Levy from December 2010, the story is also being used by Amazon to try something else: more crowdsourced creation. The company says that the idea to launch the digital comic comes out of its own community feedback, which is so essential to Amazon’s whole business model in the form of user reviews, and is now being introduced around the work coming out of Amazon Studios. The project, it says, will be used to continue to gather additional feedback to decide whether it should then develop the Levy screenplay into a full motion picture, which would also be developed by Amazon Studios.

This means that Amazon will be able to test how many people will put their money where their mouths are when it comes to consuming the stuff they say they would like to consume. (And it also helps it drum up some PR for the brand, giving them a headstart on the whole franchise opportunity.)

The news comes at the same time that Amazon is rolling out a series of new tablets and e-readers under its Kindle brand (including the Kindle Fire HD, which we reviewed yesterday). This is the first time that the Fire tablets will be making their way outside of the U.S., although it looks like the Blackburn Burrow content will for now only be in English.

It also comes at a relatively high water time for digital comics, which have been given a big boost from the rise in popularity of tablets. In July, digital comic book aggregator and storefront ComiXology said it had surpassed 75 million downloads.

Amazon Studios is commissioning the Blackburn Burrow digital comic, which will be released in installations over the next four months, from 12 Gauge Comics. 12 Gauge is working with Ron Marz (a big name in comics, penning the copy for titles like Green Lantern and Batman/Aliens) and Matthew Dow Smith (the big-name illustrator behind Doctor WhoX-Men Icons, and more) to “shape the story and look” of the comic.

And it looks like it will be the beginning of a longer-term testing format for Amazon. “Beyond entertaining lots of comic fans, we see value in digital comics as a new way to test screenplays and learn more about fan engagement,” Roy Price, director of Amazon Studios, said in a statement.

Like other projects that come out of Amazon Studios, the company is going to keep the crowdsourced element strong it continues to produce the series. With each new issue of Blackburn Burrow, Amazon will release a poll to let readers give more feedback and comments on the work.

Amazon Studios Turns Supernatural Horror Tale “Blackburn Burrow” into Digital Comic to Test Story with Audiences
SEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sep. 12, 2012– (NASDAQ: AMZN) — Amazon Studios, the original content arm of Amazon.com, Inc., is introducing an all-new digital comic book today – Blackburn Burrow, a story set in Civil War America where supernatural horrors are infesting a small Appalachian town in Northern Georgia. Blackburn Burrow first came to Amazon Studios in the form of a feature film screenplay from writer Jay Levy. Community feedback, gathered from Amazon Studios’ crowdsourcing model, triggered the idea for the popular project to be adapted into a digital comic that would be shared with audiences for feedback and tested for viability as a major motion picture.

The Blackburn Burrow digital comic looks and reads like a traditional book and is available for free through a variety of sites and platforms including top digital comic provider Graphicly, as well as AmazonStudios.com, Amazon Studios Facebook page and the Kindle Store. For more information on how to get the comic, visit www.amazonstudios.com or search for Blackburn Burrow in the Kindle Store.

Amazon Studios’ Blackburn Burrow digital comic book is produced by 12 Gauge Comics, which teamed with renowned comics writer Ron Marz (Silver Surfer, Green Lantern, Marvel vs. DC, Batman/Aliens) and veteran illustrator Matthew Dow Smith (Doctor Who, X-Men Icons, Mirror’s Edge, Day of Judgment) to shape the story and look of the comic.

“This is a very exciting new venture for Amazon Studios. Beyond entertaining lots of comic fans, we see value in digital comics as a new way to test screenplays and learn more about fan engagement,” said Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. “The 12 Gauge team has done beautiful work on the Blackburn Burrow digital comic and we are thrilled to share it with audiences to see how they react to the story of Blackburn Burrow.”

Like movie and episodic series projects that exist within Amazon Studios, the public will have the opportunity to provide feedback and direction on Blackburn Burrow as the story continues to unfold. The entire Blackburn Burrow comic will be released over a period of four months with new issues coming out every four weeks. Each release will be accompanied by a poll (www.blackburnburrowsurvey.com) related to content in that issue that encourages readers to give feedback and provide comments.

About Blackburn Burrow

In Blackburn Burrow, Mister is a legendary fighter rumored to take on the strange and supernatural. When a Union general requests his help in investigating the disappearance of a group of his soldiers from a small town in the South, Mister initially declines, refusing to get involved in the politics between the North and the South. Mister’s interest, however, is piqued when the last contact with these soldiers referenced the walking dead and a man Mister has been tracking all his life, the man who brought him into this world. Mister teams with Merrin, a young female survivor, to stop an ancient uprising and discover the family secret that connects his past to the small town of Blackburn Burrow.

Additional iPod touch features revealed [Rumor]

Yesterday we reported that according to the rumors, a new iPod touch could be unveiled alongside the new iPhone. Some of its rumored specs includes the same display being used on the new iPhone, along with a new chip as well. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has had some pretty spot on predictions in the past, he has revealed some more features that he expects will make its way into the new iPod touch. (more…)

World’s Thinnest Graphite Heat Shield Stops Your Smartphone From Melting Your Hand [Guts]

The dual and quad core processors used in modern smartphones make the devices extremely capable, but also run extremely hot. So to wrangle all that excess heat without adding too much bulk, Panasonic has managed to shrink its graphite heat shields to a mere 10μm (microns) thick. Tesla teases 2016 compact crossover & Roadster replacement

Tesla‘s fourth and fifth cars will include a crossover SUV and a Roadster replacement, founder Elon Musk has teased, though drivers will need to wait until 2016 at the earliest to get behind the wheel. Although first on the electric car company’s agenda is the 2015 $30,000 sedan Tesla hopes will open up its audience considerably, Musk told Wired, work on the subsequent models is already underway, with a simultaneous launch promised.

The crossover will challenge BMW’s premium compact SUV, the X3, in the increasingly competitive (and lucrative) segment of those wanting off-road looks but without sacrificing on-road performance. As for the Roadster replacement, that will supposedly have “supercar performance, but not supercar pricing” Musk says, with a focus on a rewarding driver experience.

The new models aren’t just Tesla being over-ambitious: according to Musk, they’re an essential part of the car company making a profit from the investments it has made in underlying vehicle architecture. Neither has been officially named, though the founder did say that previous comments of the crossover being called the “Model E” were tongue-in-cheek and not to be taken seriously.

Tesla’s second car, the Model S, arrived with buyers in June, and the new sedan is expected to be slightly smaller as well as cheaper. Still, it will “look great and perform better than anything in its price range” Musk insists.

The third car, the Model X crossover unveiled earlier this year, is expected to hit roads in 2014.

Blackberry 10 demo video surfaces, shows off app switching and swipe gestures

If you’re a Blackberry loyalist and you’re wondering what is it about Blackberry 10 that makes it so special, or what can it do that will make you want to stick around, you’re in luck as a new Blackberry 10 demo video has been released which shows off app switching along with some additional gestures. We have to admit that it looks pretty smooth based on what we’ve seen so far, but given that the video was recorded in June and only released in September, it’s hard to say if we’re looking at an early build or perhaps a build that’s further down the line. Either way if it’s an early one, its smoothness and its looks are certainly promising, so if you still feel that Blackberry is still the platform of your choice, check out the video above to see what you can expect from Blackberry 10.

Samsung appears to be filming an anti-Apple parody commercial

It is no secret that both Samsung and Apple are considered to be bitter rivals, what with Apple gaining a significant victory over Samsung in the US in their recent legal battle. While Samsung will appeal the judge’s decision, in the meantime they have decided to film an anti-Apple commercial where they basically parody Apple’s retail stores, the Geniuses who work there along with mockup devices which based on the photos, look nothing like Apple’s products (we guess that was the point). They have also created a sign that says, “It’s coming” in the photo above which we’re assuming is referring to Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5 that should be announced later today. In any case Samsung has stated that they will sue Apple if the iPhone 5 has 4G LTE on board, so we guess this is just the beginning of what looks like another lengthy legal battle. In any case stay tuned as we’ll keep an eye out for the parody commercial when it has been released.

The MorphCase gives your iPod touch phone-like functionality

In some ways the iPod touch could be thought of as a lower-end version of the iPhone, just minus the voice calling capabilities (unless via VoIP programs like Skype) and less powerful specs. However if you’d rather not own an iPod touch and an iPhone at the same time, but would like to turn your iPod touch into a more dedicated VoIP device, this Indiegogo project might be worth taking a look at. Dubbed the MorphCase, this is basically an accessory for your iPod touch that will give it a speaker and microphone placed in positions where one might expect on the phone. While you won’t be able to make regular calls via mobile networks, it will let you use your iPod touch like you would a phone. It straps on to your iPod touch and plugs into its 3.5mm audio jack. Of course this is only useful if you find yourself making a lot of VoIP calls and have access to WiFi hotspots – either that or you can tether your phone and use the iPod touch to make calls, especially if you know that you’re reaching your credit limit. If you’re interested in helping the MorphCase Indiegogo project succeed, head on over to its page to donate.

Sony X Headphones: X-Factor or Tech Factor?

When I think of X-Factor, I think of the mutant heroes in the Marvel Universe, not the Simon Cowell’s American Idol knock-off. Sure, Havok can’t belt out any tunes, but he can disintegrate your with his plasma blasts. That being said, these new Sony headphones look good, tech-wise, if you can get past the X-Factor branding.

The Sony X Headphones are aimed at the audio enthusiast market. Despite the X-Factor tie-in, their design is striking and eye catching, and I’ve heard that they are very comfortable to wear for long hours. Naturally, after some time, you’ll probably get the sweaty-ear syndrome, but that can’t be avoided with full-size headphones.

They have 50mm drivers that will deliver a powerful bass directly to your ears. They offer a very wide frequency response range froms 3 to 29,000 Hz and the sensitivity is 106 dB/mW. They also offer an in-line microphone and remote control for use with iOS devices.

The headphones fold up pretty neatly for traveling, though if you are looking for active noise-cancellation, you’ll need to look elsewhere. The Sony X headphones will be available starting September 27th for $300 (USD).

Sony Cyber-shot RX1 camera debuts

When it comes to the world of digital cameras, it is safe to say that we are more or less spoilt for choice. After all, there are plenty of manufacturers out there with a gamut of offerings to choose from, that the uninitiated will definitely lose their way around unless they have different sites to help guide them select the camera that best suits their needs and requirements. Without much further ado, here we are with the Sony Cyber-shot RX1 that will boast of a 35mm full-frame image sensor and wide aperture f/2 lens, where it is touted to be the first full frame point-and-shoot digital camera in the world. Anyone else beg to differ? Let us check out just what the Sony Cyber-shot RX1 offers in the extended post.

As tipped earlier, the Sony Cyber-shot RX1 comes with an advanced 35mm full-frame 24.3-megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor and exceptional Carl Zeiss T*t 35mm f/2.0 fixed lens, being carried on a highly portable, lightweight camera body. Tipping the scales at just slightly more than a pound, it is by far and large smaller and lighter than any full-frame DSLR without sacrificing image quality, HD video quality or manual control. Of course, there is a price to pay for that, but we will get to the pricing details at the end.

With its unified lens and body design, the Sony Cyber-shot RX1 delivers performance which few interchangeable lenses are able to match, boasting a near-silent in-lens shutter and is far more compact than comparable lenses of interchangeable design. Full manual control options as well as an intuitive user interface make life easier for photographers to adjust all settings quickly and easily.

With the 35mm full-frame sensor within, the Sony Cyber-shot RX1 more than doubles the area of APS-C sensors commonly found in much bulkier DSLR cameras, letting it take in far more light when shooting. This means the camera’s sensitivity range is a generous ISO 100 – 25600, letting you shoot as low as ISO 50 in expanded sensitivity mode.

The asking price for the Cyber-shot RX1? A rather wallet burning $2,800. Any takers?
