AMD releases Android emulator for AMD-equipped PCs

While it’s always been possible to emulate an Android device on a Windows PC, to this point it hasn’t been practical for most users and would best be described as a developer tool. But if you’ve got a PC with an AMD chip inside, you can now emulate individual Android apps, including some popular games like Fruit Ninja. Today, AMD launched the AppZone player, which makes it possible to run native Android apps on a Windows PC. The AppZone player seems to have a good deal of AMD-specific technology baked in, so it won’t run on Intel PCs.

As the holiday season draws closer, bargain hunters and retailers alike are starting to map out their Black Friday game plan. However, if you’re balling on a budget and looking to score a stellar smartphone, then allow us to lend a helping hand. An anonymous tipster has shared a peek at one of Sprint’s post-Turkey Day attractions, with the gory details shown in the image above. Both current and prospecting customers will have a chance to snag a Galaxy S III for $50 on a new two-year agreement, with Sprint no doubt hoping to use its unlimited data policy to lure to-be network switchers. Your House in LEGO®

Here I go again. I love LEGO. One of my favorite videos is James May’s Toy Stories and the construction of an actual LEGO house. Can you imagine living in such an abode? Movoto Real Estate offers a variety of tips and ideas on home buying on Movoto Blog. Trying to bring some humor into our days, they posted a LEGO calculator. Yes! You can determine – based on square footage and floors – how many LEGO bricks and dollars would be required to build a house. To give you an idea, 2000 square feet over 2 floors would run you about $1 million. Certainly not what your friends would expect when you invite them to your million dollar home. Their estimates strictly covers the walls and roof. So bump the price up if you want to fully furnish your unit. Read more on their methodology and logic on the blog, and see what your home, built in LEGO, would cost.

Dissoluble electronic implants for human body

Tiny electronic gadgets have greatly aided researchers and scientists in the field of medicine. These tiny gadgets can carry sensors to the remotest parts of human body. However, scientists have been trying to find a way to dispose them once they have served their purpose.

Now, University of Illinois researchers have come up with a novel solution to dispense with the electronic implants when they are no longer useful. They can, for instance, be used to carry a drug to a certain part in the body and once they have delivered the drug, they can then dissolve on their own. This is possible by using fully biodegradable electronics. (more…)

Mass Effect Trilogy Coming to PC, Xbox 360 and PS3

If you have a gamer on your holiday shopping list and they like shooters with a little RPG mixed in on the side, EA and BioWare have the perfect gift. On November 6, BioWare is launching the Mass Effect Trilogy compilation. The compilation will have all three Mass Effect games in one package.

mass effect 3 cover

The bundle pack will cost just $59.99(USD) and will provide many hours of epic gaming action. Mass Effect is one of the best video game franchises out there in my opinion. The franchise will take you from our first introduction to Commander Shepherd all the way to the point where he (SPOILER ALERT) sacrifices himself to save humanity.

The trilogy pack will be available for the Xbox 360 and PC on November 6. In a kick to the groin for PS3 gamers, there is no launch date offer for the PlayStation version of the Mass Effect Trilogy. I hope that the PS3 version will come in time for holiday gift-giving, but since the original Mass Effect was never released on the PS3, it’s likely to result in some delays for that console.

This Universal Macro Lens Is Your Dealzmodo-Exclusive Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

We, as cameraphone-toting humans, love to take photos. 10% of all photos ever taken have been taken in the past year. Every two seconds we take as many photos as all humanity did in the 1800s, mostly powered by the 2.5 billion camera phones currently in people’s pockets. That’s awesome! But it also means that billions of photos are taken with identical tiny lenses, because most people aren’t attaching a bulky case to add a lens mount. And smartphone stock lenses aren’t great for macro photography. More »

Sony Xperia tipo and tipo dual reach the US in unlocked form, give Americans a taste of dual SIMs

Sony Xperia tipo hands-on

Few of us who live outside of Asia or Eastern Europe know the potential convenience of a dual SIM phone. Own one and you can globetrot, or else keep separate home and work lines without the bulk of an extra device in the pocket. Sony is gambling that enough Americans have that multi-line desire by selling the Xperia tipo dual and its regular, single-SIM counterpart in the US as unlocked GSM models. Neither of the Android 4.0 phones is what we’d call a powerhouse with the same 3.5-inch screen, 3.2-megapixel camera and 800MHz Snapdragon inside, but both can latch on to HSPA 3G on AT&T, refarmed T-Mobile coverage and 2100MHz carriers abroad, even if the single-SIM tipo curiously has 900MHz 3G support that the tipo dual lacks. It’s undoubtedly price that Sony is counting on more than anything: at respective contract-free prices of $180 and $190 for the tipo and tipo dual, the pair of Xperias may be sold most often as travel-only phones for the jet set.

AT&T’s new MiFi Liberate is LTE-capable, ‘world’s first’ with touchscreen display

AT&T's new MiFi Liberate is LTEcapable, 'world's first' with touchscreen display

We’ll have to give it to AT&T for going with something a wee bit different than what we’re accustomed to seeing in the world of handy MiFis — but with touchscreens apparently being a thing nowadays, it also shouldn’t surprise us that the company chose to go this route. Either way, the newly introduced MiFi Liberate will surely be of help to those who need to stay connected while on the go, offering features such as LTE connectivity (provided the network’s live in the area, of course), simultaneous pairing of up to 10 WiFi devices, 11-hour battery life, a microSD slot, DLNA capabilities and, as you can see above, a 2.8-inch touchscreen display. Unfortunately, the carrier didn’t say when we can expect the Liberate to be up for grabs (or for how much), with a company representative only telling us that it’ll be at some point “in the coming months.” While we wait for those details, however, feel free to check out the extra pic located just past the break.

BlueStacks Android apps on PCs made simple with AMD AppZone Player

Another rather fabulous step towards total cross-platform compatibility has been made this week as the AMD AppZone Player is announced with full BlueStacks power under the hood. What you’ll be doing here is working on your AMD-toting PC with an application called AMD AppZone Player – with this app you’ll be able to play any and all AMD AppZone Android-based apps at your leisure. At the moment you’ll not have direct access to the Google Play app store, but there’s always a workaround.

This announcement has the AMD AppZone Player made to work perfectly with Android apps even if they were made for phones or tablets. With the player, you’ve got BlueStacks providing you with an optimized experience that makes full use of AMD Radeon graphics and OpenGL drivers found in AMD APUs and GPUs. At the moment there are 50 free apps – some of the biggest names in the app universe in general – available for your perusal.

This technology also works with a Cloud Connect service that’ll allow you to sync both apps and SMS messages with your Android smartphone or tablet. You’ll need the BlueStacks Cloud Connect app on your Android device as well – but once you’ve got it, you’ll be up on both machines like a snap. Cloud Connect is up on the Google Play app store right this minute for you to download and utilize.

BlueStacks makes this process simple – just head to the AMD AppZone and download any app to your AMD-toting PC. When you do, you’ll have an automatic check to see if you’ve got the AMD AppZone Player, and if you don’t, you’ll have the option to download it instantly. So very simple for all the PC/Android lovers!

Lensbaby Spark Review: Magical Camera Blur Effects, If You Fuss With It [Lightning Review]

Tilt-shift photography is all the rage. It’s based on a type of lens that distorts perspective and focal plane to create atmospheric blur effects. Tilt-shift lenses are usually cray expensive, but Lensbaby makes a whole line of blur-tastic lenses for cheap. Their newest toy for a DSLR, the Spark, only costs $80. But does it deliver anything worthwhile? More »
