Tesla details service plans, software updates for Model S

So you drop $50,000+ on a Tesla Model S — then what? The all-electric automaker offered some more details on what folks can expect in the ensuing years on its blog this week, detailing service plans and software updates, and what it’ll all cost. On that latter point, you can expect to pay $600 for a basic one-year service plan, or opt for a four-year package that’ll set you back $1900 — on-site visits are available for an extra $100, or as part of a four-year, $2400 plan that includes unlimited on-site visits. To provide that service, Tesla has also announced that it’s nearly tripling its number of service centers, which it says will mean there’s a service center within 100 miles of more than 90 percent of Model S reservation holders. What’s more, it’s also offered some details on what those owners will see in future software updates, including an optional “creep” mode that will mimic the slow, forward roll of a car with an automatic transmission. You can find more details and a full list of service centers at the links below.

Vodafone stockpiles nano-SIMs for iPhone 5 launch

With the launch of the next iPhone just around the corner, the wireless carriers who will be officially on board are naturally gearing up for it. Vodafone UK, for instance, has been found to be stockpiling nano-SIMs which will fit neatly into the new iPhone.

In a blog post, the company divulged that it had stockpiled 500,000 nano-SIMs so as to meet the expected demand from iPhone 5 users once the device comes out. The post was eventually pulled off from the blog but not before Pocket-lint was able to grab the images as well as the text. (more…)

Terraria coming to Xbox 360, PS3 next year

Well here’s a surprising bit of gaming news: it turns out that indie gem Terraria will be making its way to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network next year. Publisher 505 Games announced the console version of the much-loved PC title today. Sadly, there isn’t a solid release date for the console version of the game yet, with 505 Games and developer Engine Software merely saying it’ll be out “early next year.”

Terraria launched at a time last year when Minecraft fever was in full swing. For those who’ve never heard of Terraria before, here’s a quick breakdown: Terraria is a 2D side-scrolling adventure RPG in which the main goal is to explore, build, and craft. It sounds a lot like Minecraft on paper, but in practice the two are actually quite different. Terraria has some strengths over Minecraft (like combat), whereas Minecraft has some over Terraria (like building). Terraria was met with great critical reception upon release, and went on to be a big seller on Steam – the PC version has sold over 1.6 million copies since release.

In a statement today, Terraria creator Andrew Spinks expressed his excitement in the fact that the game is coming to consoles. “I can’t say how excited I am to finally have Terraria come to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3!” he said. “To see it come so far is a complete shock, especially after such humble beginnings. It’s always been my dream to have as many people as possible know and enjoy Terraria as much as I have, and this is another big step in that direction!”

Spinks also teased that 505 and Engine are planning some additional content for this console release. Naturally, we don’t know what that new content is yet, but that’s definitely something to get excited about. Re-Logic (developer of the original PC version) added quite a bit of content after Terraria first launched, but has now halted production on the game as it works on other projects. Perhaps PC players will get this bonus content that will be included in the console version? A Terraria addict can only hope. Stay tuned for more information.

Grab Sony’s HMZ-T2 head-mounted display and play these games at Tokyo Game Show

Forget about that messy Oculus Rift, business — Sony’s got a properly futuristic looking (and shiny!) head-mounted display for gaming, too, and it’s gonna make another public appearance at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. Of course, Sony’s effort doesn’t also offer head tracking, but, again, it’s much nicer looking, so we’re willing to excuse major technical differences. A whole litany of games will be playable with the HMZ-T2 device at TGS, from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance to Assassin’s Creed 3 (some games are only demoable with the HMZ device, oddly). As we learned earlier today, the HMZ-T2 goes on sale (in Japan at least) this October for nearly $900. That Oculus Rift is starting to sound much more appealing, eh?

Samsung to booby-trap iPhone 5 launch with LTE patent strike

Samsung is aiming to hijack Apple’s new iPhone 5 launch by miring its rival in LTE patent litigation, sources at the company have apparently confirmed, echoing Apple’s attempts to injunction new Samsung phones. “Samsung Electronics has decided to take immediate legal action against the Cupertino-based Apple” an unnamed insider told The Korea Times. “Countries in Europe and even the United States – Apple’s home-turf – are our primary targets.”

The strategy, if enacted as the sources claim, would follow a path already established by Apple at the launch of the Galaxy S III earlier in 2013. Apple attempted to secure a US sales ban – as well as injunctions in other countries, including Samsung’s own South Korea home – as soon as the Galaxy S III launched, citing patent infringement.

That sales ban failed to materialize, though sales of some of Samsung’s range were affected in other countries as Apple’s legal team sniped down tablets and phones alike. This time around, it’s apparently Samsung’s turn to wield the patent portfolio.

Samsung will apparently use its strengths in LTE development to show the courts that Apple has infringed on 4G technologies, arguing that the FRAND defense Apple used in previous litigation around 3G patents won’t hold up again.

“Apple claimed the existing 3G-related patents are standard essential patents (SEPs) according to our earlier commitment to the FRAND (fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory) terms” an unnamed source told the Korean paper. “But the story is totally different when you talk about LTE patents. These are new and highly-valued.”

Apple has apparently already feathered its LTE patent nest, buying or filing 434 4G patents so as to fend off any attacks from Samsung or others. That’s gotten off to a shaky start, however; attempts to have HTC LTE patents invalidated faced stronger than expected push-back from the US judiciary.

Assuming no challenges to sales are permitted, Apple is expected to sell as many as 10m iPhone 5 handsets in September 2012 alone.
