BlackBerry sales dwindle to nil in “meaningful number” of US stores

BlackBerry sales in the US have ditched and some stores have failed to sell a single handset from RIM’s range in the past month, according to analyst checks, painting a dreary picture of the Canadian company’s future. “We believe that current run rates are roughly one-fifth of those we saw in the US just eight months ago,” Pacific Crest’s James Faucette told AllThingsD, adding ominously that “we found a meaningful number of carrier retail locations which had not sold a single BlackBerry in over a month.”

Sales of BlackBerry devices in stores were apparently unchanged, comparing August to July, but Pacific Crest found evidence that retailers were simply not restocking with new devices. “We detected meaningfully lower inventory levels versus a month ago” Faucette pointed out.

That’s a real problem for RIM, as the company needs to tide its finances over through Q4 2012 and into early 2013, something it has been relying on existing BlackBerry 7 handsets to deliver. Next year, BlackBerry 10 will debut – delayed and much criticized – with RIM fighting to reclaim shelf space and market mindshare from iOS, Android and, to a lesser extent, Windows Phone.

“Even assuming that BlackBerry 10 devices roll out on time starting in 2013,” Faucette concludes, “we believe the clear evidence of shelf-space pressure our checks have detected does not bode well for the company in the longer term.”

RIM said in a statement on the analyst comments that it was “focused on the successful launch” of its new platform, reiterating that the rewritten OS was expected sometime in Q1 2013.

Nokia and Virgin Atlantic work to deliver wireless charging at airports

At the recently concluded Nokia event in New York last week, we saw the introduction of the new Lumia 920 that came with wireless charging capability. Well, it makes perfect sense then, for Nokia as well as Virgin Atlantic to work together to install wireless charging facilities at Virgin Atlantic’s Heathrow Clubhouse so that passengers are able to juice up their dead batteries before taking off for their destination. Of course, it does help if the plane itself comes with power outlets (some airlines do offer that), but then again having wireless charging capability is always a plus point since there are no cables to worry about.

Nokia’s executive vice president of smart devices, Jo Harlow, mentioned, “Virgin Atlantic is putting passengers first by removing a major anxiety, particularly for business travellers – how to keep their phone charged throughout a long day.” Will Nokia be able to introduce wireless charging capability as a standard for the industry in the near future?

iPod touch rumored to arrive alongside iPhone 5

Apple is all set to unveil its new flagship smartphone, expectantly called the iPhone 5, in its launch event on September 12th. A fresh round of rumors is now suggesting that the company may also unveil new iPod touch at the occasion.

In the past, it has been suggested by analysts that Apple may use components from its existing iOS devices to create a new iPod touch. Such speculations have been backed by Will Strafach. He tweeted from his account that the new iPod touch will feature a 1136 x 640 resolution display. (more…)

iPad mini images arrive, are they legit or not?

Tomorrow, September 12th would mark a very important day in the life of Apple as the world could very well be introduced to the iPhone 5 for the first time (or perhaps it might be known as the new iPhone, who knows?). Well, there are also whispers that there is the possibility of a new and smaller iPad in the works by Cupertino as well, and the general public has christened it the iPad mini, although there is still no official confirmation from Apple as to the naming convention, or even if the device exists, for that matter.

French site NowehereElse does seem to have their fair share of moles, and they managed to snag a photo of what could very well be the alleged iPad mini. So far, everything does seem to look as though it is in line with the rumors of the iPad mini to date. What do you think of the iPad mini, will it be able to be a hit and obliterate all the other tablets in the 7″ form factor market?

Casio Smartwatches: They’ll G-Shock Your Bluetooth

Smartwatches seem to be hot new thing that watchmakers are releasing these days. What I like about Casio’s offering is that it doesn’t look like most smartwatches, instead looking like most of Casio’s G-Shocks.

These new smartwatches are part of Casio’s expansive G-Shock line. The GB-6900AA and GB-5600AA are able to connect to iPhones via Bluetooth. You’ll be able to receive emails alerts as well as notifications on it. There’s even an audio alert to help you find your phone in case you lose it. This can be activated by pressing a single button.

An app will be released alongside the watches, and Casio hasn’t yet announced the US pricing or availability, but they will be released in Japan in October and November for ¥18,000 (~$230 USD).

Apple’s Hacker Fix: Nuke Your iTunes Account, Refuse to Let You Back In [Apple]

Xiaomi Phone 2 pre-production units available on September 22nd, limited to 600 lucky buyers

Xiaomi Phone 2 pre-production units available on September 22nd, limited to 600 units only

Much like the run-up to the previous flagship product launch, Qualcomm-backed Xiaomi has just announced that it’ll be selling a small batch of pre-production second-gen Xiaomi Phones, in the hopes to get some keen users to perform last-minute checks before mass production. To be exact, only 600 of these quad-core Jelly Bean phones will be made available online at local time 10am on September 22nd (that’s 10pm ET on the 21st); and even if you have CN¥1,999 ($310) to spare, you’ll still need to be one of the 1,200 expert members from the Xiaomi and MIUI online communities to be able to hit the “order” button. Nice hype drive, if you ask us.

Later on, successful buyers can simply swap their engineering units in for a final version of the 16GB or 32GB Xiaomi Phone 2 — the latter a new addition that co-founder Lei Jun announced on Sina Weibo last Saturday (where he also cheekily asked if anyone need a 64GB flavor). For those who qualify but would rather avoid the digital bloodshed next week, we suggest you wait until the official Chinese launch in the second-half of October; or try Taiwan by the end of the year.
