Apple’s next iPhone is coming tomorrow. If you’re planning cashing in your old phone, you need to do it now. Here’s where to look for the best deal while there’s still some time left. More »
How big is your cable squid? Mine is pretty big, and threatening to take over more and more space on and around my desk. It’s never been easy to organize cables, but Switzerland’s Punkt seeks to change this by simply hiding away all of your cables in a sleek box.
The Punkt ES 01 was designed by Georges Moanack, and it allows you to tuck away cables under its rounded lid. Chaos becomes organized, and it’s good looking enough that you won’t be worried if people see it in your home office. Its neutral colors blend in with most interiors. It’s got a soft white LED that indicates its power status.
The ES 01 has 5 sockets, a removable lid, and a central power button to power all of the outlets off simultaneously. The way that the sockets are positioned is supposed to allow you to plug in power supplies that cover two or three sockets.
The ES 01 comes in red, white or black and will be available shortly. Unfortunately, it looks like it’s only going to be available with European sockets for now.

iPhone 5: the rumor roundup
Posted in: Today's ChiliWe’re on the cusp of Apple’s sixth iPhone launch, and there’s very different expectations than there were last year. The 2011 rumor cycle left more than a few people burned: the later-than-usual October launch and repeated claims of a heavily-remade design led some to a disappointment when the iPhone 4S arrived, even though the final product had a slew of camera, speed and voice command upgrades. This year, the rumors have been grounded well before there was an event date in our hands.
There have been fewer instances of wild rumors. Instead, it’s been based more around pragmatism, using either tangible leaks or sources that have a solid track record. Think of the perennial leaks from the Wall Street Journal or the increasingly well-established sourcing from iMore and The Loop. Whether you’re conspiracy-minded or not, it’s been hard to ignore the sheer number of claims that have tamped down expectations rather than inflated them. It’s as though there’s a collective fear we’ll see a repeat of the 2011 hysteria and deal with fans (or detractors) complaining about missing features that were never promised in the first place.
Where last summer was full of uncertainty, this year there’s a mounting consensus as to what we’ll see, how we’ll get it, and when. Tracking everything that’s been mentioned may be a handful, however. With that in mind, we’ll dive in and gauge what’s likely to emerge from behind Apple’s curtain on September 12th — as well as what we can rule out from the get-go.

Apple is expected to sell a whopping 10m new iPhone 5 smartphones by the end of September, analysts predict, arguing that nothing short of a disastrously unconvincing launch tomorrow could scupper the handset. Notoriously Apple-enthused Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster pegged the 10m figure, SFGate reports, though he’s not the only industry-watcher to be positive about what’s already tipped to be the “biggest upgrade in consumer electronics history.”
Although Apple is expected to reveal the new iPhone 5 tomorrow, pre-sales of the smartphone aren’t expected to begin until the end of the week, with units on shelves likely on Friday, September 21. Even with availability so relatively late in the month, however, anticipation for the handset is so strong that analysts expect supplies, not demand, to be the limiting factor.
Component issues, such as a shortage of the display panels (themselves believed to be growing in size from the 3.5-inch of the current generation to roughly 4-inches, for an altogether longer device), have been rumored from Sharp among others, and Apple is said to be juggling its suppliers so as to reduce dependence on certain firms, notably Samsung. Previous Apple hardware launches, for both the iPhone and the iPad, have been marked by scarcity of stock, with shipment delays often extending to a month for online orders.
What could shake the new iPhone up, however, is the inclusion of LTE connectivity. Apple is said to be ensuring compatibility with various carriers across the world but – with so many flavors of LTE in use – some will inevitably be left out of the 4G loop. Which those will be may impact demand on a country-by-country basis.
Nonetheless, the consensus is that it would take something serious to dampen the iPhone’s momentum. “Until they do something really unimpressive, which I don’t see happening this time around, Apple has a serious hit on its hands” IDC analyst Ramon Llamas said of the new handset. Even a weak media reaction is unlikely to add up to lax sales, however. The iPhone 4S, a more incremental upgrade than the iPhone 5 is expected to represent, met with apathetic responses from observers in the industry, but went on to eclipse sales of all of Apple’s previous smartphones.
SlashGear will be liveblogging the whole Apple launch from 10AM PT (1PM ET; 6PM UK) at live.slashgear.com so join us for all the iPhone news as it’s announced!
