EE 4G LTE hands-on: Speed tests!

EE‘s 4G LTE network is already live, and so we grabbed some hands-on time to see just how quickly the new breed of 4G handsets set to hit the UK can run. The numbers – on what’s an unstressed network, it’s worth remembering – are certainly impressive, with download rates in excess of 34Mbps and uploads of over 22Mbps at times.

The more usual rates we saw were in the 26-30Mbps download range, here in London, while uploads generally hovered in the range of 12-13Mbps. Peak bursts improved those numbers considerably, while ping times hovered around the 60-70ms mark.

Of course, it’s easy to see ridiculously high speeds when there’s hardly anyone else using the network; we saw similarly eye-watering figures from Verizon’s initial benchmarking in the US. That settled into somewhat less incredible numbers eventually, though still well in excess of what 3G could deliver.

EE is talking about LTE speeds around 4-5x what the current 3G network offers, which is still a considerable improvement, though we’ll need to wait until the roll-out begins in the tail-end of 2012 to see how it holds up in practice. The first four cities go live from today, broadening to sixteen cities by the end of the year.

Canon EOS 6D announcement next week? [Rumor]

If you’re in the market for a new camera, the folks at Canon Rumors have been tipped off that there might be an announcement by Canon next week for a new EOS 6D. The full specs of the camera have not been revealed yet, but here are some of the specs that we can expect – if they are true. For starters it will feature a 22MP image sensor that is the same as the 5D MK III, 4.5fps, a touchscreen display, the same AF system used in the 7D and will feature a build that is of slightly lower quality compared to the 5D MK III. If anything it sounds like it’s an in-between camera of the 7D and the 5D MK III, but we guess we will have to wait for the official announcement and specs to see if they are true. In any case we’ll be taking this with a grain of salt for now and suggest you do the same too, but if you like the idea of an EOS 6D with the specs mentioned above, be sure to check back with us next week for confirmation if there is any to be had!

More alleged Sony A99 photos surface

If the rumors are to be believed, Sony’s A99 camera could be revealed tomorrow, putting an end to all the rumors, speculation and leaked images, and hopefully confirming some of them in the process. The good news is that if the A99 is a camera you’ve been looking forward to, perhaps to provide you with an alternative option to other cameras in its range, or if you’ve bought into the rumors and speculation, then you’re in luck as the folks at Photoprice Canada have managed to get their hands on more photos of what they claim is the A99. While the body does sport the name “A99”, it’s hard to tell if these photos are authentic or if they’re made up in Photoshop, but assuming it is true, it seems that we can expect the camera to feature both headphone and microphone output, a feature that some A99 hopefuls have been looking forward to. In any case we’ll take this with a grain of salt for now, but check back with us tomorrow where hopefully Sony will have announced the A99.

Bethesda’s Peter Hines does not believe that current-gen consoles are holding them back

Bethesda logoThere has been a lot of focus on next-gen gaming consoles lately, especially with rumors suggesting that companies such as Microsoft and Sony could be unveiling the Xbox 720 and the PlayStation 4 respectively next year at E3. While it remains to be seen whether that is the case, Bethesda’s PR and Marketing VP, Peter Hines, believes that there is still a lot of life left in current consoles. He also stated that he believes that the current generation of consoles aren’t holding Bethesda out in releasing games, although we can’t help but feel that perhaps they should have said that after they have manage to sort out the Skyrim: Dawnguard DLC for PlayStation 3 owners, who still do not have the DLC for their consoles even after Hearthfire, the second DLC for Skyrim, was released. In any case it’s interesting to hear that not all developers are looking to jump aboard the next-gen bandwagon, but what do you gamers think? Do you think the current Xbox/PlayStation consoles still have a lot of life left in them?

Instacube pledges Facebook photo support if next stretch goal is met

Last month, I mentioned an interesting digital photo frame that had turned up on Kickstarter seeking funding. The little digital photo frame is called the Instacube and when it first started its crowd sourced funding push it was designed to display photographs from your Instagram feed. When w first talked about it the company had raised almost $124,000 toward its goal of $250,000 and still had 30 days to go.

The developers have raised more cash than their goal so far having met their first stretch goal of $400,000. When they raised $400,000, the developers began offering pre-orders for black and white versions of the Instacube. The team has now announced that if they reach their neck stretch goal of $500,000, they will offer direct support for Facebook photos.

The developers announced a partnership last week with SmartThings that it promised will make the Instacube more dynamic. Adding the ability to show Facebook photos makes a lot of sense and is something I think little device definitely needs. Most people have considerably more photos simply uploaded to Facebook than they do in Instagram feeds.

If you missed the Instacube the first time around, it’s a little square digital proto-frame with integrated Wi-Fi. The device is 7.5-inches tall and wide with a depth of 2.5-inches. It has a touchscreen with a resolution of 600 x 600. The device’s Kickstarter campaign will end on September 21.

EE confirms Nokia Lumia 920, 820 and Samsung Galaxy S III among first handsets on new LTE network (updated)

Confirming those early rumors, Nokia’s new Windows Phone 8 flagship will come to the UK exclusively on Everything Everywhere’s newly re-branded EE LTE network. The 4.5-inch Lumia 920 will launch on the freshly announced carrier later this year, along with the Lumia 820, Samsung Galaxy S III LTE, Huawei Ascend 4G and HTC One XL (if the on stage demo is anything to go by). We’re still waiting for the full list of hardware to be confirmed, along with availability details, but for now, you can start deciding your weapon of choice.

Update: We’ve just added the press release, which confirms the HTC One XL is among the launch handsets.

Update: Looks like that GS III will be an exclusive “titanium grey” color running Jelly Bean out of the box, according to Pocket-lint. Also, EE just confirmed to us that — as rumored — it has exclusivity over the Lumia 920.

China speeds up its LTE schedule, could issue permits ‘within a year’

China speeds up its LTE schedule, could issue permits 'within a year'China’s Minister of Information and IT doesn’t always explain his decisions in much detail, leaving us to ponder a sudden acceleration in his plans to roll out LTE. Miao Wei had previously indicated that 4G permits wouldn’t be issued to operators until at least 2014, but now the word according Xinhua News is that this bureaucratic phase will be completed “within about a year.” Perhaps those TD-LTE base stations are being built faster than he expected, or maybe the idea of being beaten to the punch by a little island nation is just too much.

New study shows that you are being monitored if you download torrents

If you’ve ever torrented movies, music, TV shows, games, software and etc., or if you still do that, you’re probably aware that there is a good chance that you will get caught by the authorities. However we’re also sure that some of you guys subscribe to the notion that with thousands of people downloading at once, why would they choose you, right? Well in a recent study done by the Birmingham University in the UK, it shows that those who download torrents, especially the popular ones, you are apparently being monitored by up to 10 different monitoring entities.

Some of these entities are security companies, probably on the lookout for malware or new viruses, while other entities includes copyright firms and torrent researchers. There were apparently more entities involved but their identities have been masked, leaving us to wonder if perhaps these are the authorities. In any case you’re probably aware that downloading torrents of copyrighted material is illegal in the first place, but if you ever needed a reason to stop, perhaps this is something worth thinking about.
