Nikon holding press conference in Thailand 13th of September

A few weeks ago we reported on a rumor that the Nikon D600 could be unveiled on the 13th of September. Since it was only a rumor then, it was hard to say if it would pan out. While the Nikon D600 has yet to be officially announced, it looks like something could be happening on the 13th of September as Nikon has officially sent out the invites (via Tech Excite) to a press conference in Thailand. We’re not sure if this press conference has anything to do with the D600, but given that it happens to coincide with the rumors, well perhaps it might not be such a coincidence after all. In any case if you’re looking forward to new Nikon cameras, be sure to check back with us on the 13th of September for the details, so stay tuned for more updates!

Raytheon High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile tested successfully

A nuclear deterrent is a good thing if you are the one with it, but this will lead to an escalation in the arms race across the global political arena. Unfortunately, this is where the world is at right now, so it makes sense to have more sophisticated defenses systems in order to defend your country’s sovereignty. Raytheon has successfully tested their High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missile (HARM) which is said to be able to suppress or destroys surface-to-air missile radars, early warning radars and radar-directed air defense artillery systems. This helps disable the enemies defenses so that you can launch an attack of your own while minimizing risks to your own troops.

The upgrade known as the HARM Control Section Modification (HCSM), where it is part of an ongoing U.S. Air Force-led competition between two contractors. Does it make you sleep better at night knowing that the US has such technology at their disposal on the battlefield? I suppose so if you are not on the receiving end. Let’s just hope the other rogue countries and political powers will know better than walk into HARM’s way – pardon the pun. Also, we make no apologies for the insidious Ordos making a cameo above.

Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover now comes in white

The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover has just been unveiled, where it comes in the color that most brides would love – pure white. With the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover, it was specially designed to provide the new iPad with a tailored fit in addition to a sleek look, making it a seamless visual piece of work that at first glance, you would be hard-pressed to tell the two apart. This is due to the clever implementation of a magnetic clip which is securely attached to your iPad’s cover.

The Bluetooth keyboard (and hence, wireless) is said to come with a 6-month battery life, although I am not quite sure just how many hours a day of use you would have with the Bluetooth keyboard in order to pull such a rating. Assuming we are talking about 8-hours daily in a five day work week, that would be super impressive, but a more intelligent guesstimate would say the 6 months apply to its standby time. You can pick up the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for $99.99 a pop if you are interested. [Press Release]

bebionic3 bionic hand launched

A couple of years ago, we talked about how the bebionic bionic hand is ready to rock and roll. Well, fast forward by two years, and we already have the bebionic3 in tow, where it was officially launched at the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association 2012 National Assembly. This innovative piece of medical technology will see improvements made over the current bebionic, boasting a revolutionary new design and the clever implementation of advanced new materials which make it a whole lot more durable. Your “grip” will be improved, and so will the strength and accuracy departments be affected accordingly. Smart electronics and significant aesthetic improvements coupled with new software makes the bebionic3 bionic hand easier to use than ever before.

According to Paul Steeper, Managing Director of RSLSteeper Products Division, “bebionic3 is the culmination of many years of development, and has the potential to revolutionise the lives of amputees from across the world. We have been able to make significant improvements to a design that was already the world’s most advanced myo-electric hand, making it stronger, more precise and easier to programme. The new hand has been designed to help amputees to tackle real-life, everyday situations, and provides the perfect balance between advanced technology, functionality and aesthetics.”

Let us hope that Paul is correct, and who knows, Anakin Skywalker’s bionic hand might not be too far off in the future. [Press Release]

Audience noise cancelling said not to feature in next iPhone

There was a time when Audience’s contribution to the iPhone’s call clarity was not only praised, but actively hunted down. But now it looks like the party is over — at least according to the chip maker itself. Citing events “in the normal course of business” the firm believes that its technology won’t be making it into Apple’s next handset — unsurprisingly a big blow for its shareholders. While it remains unconfirmed, Audience suggested in a conference call that Apple has built its own audio team. Something that is possible already creating a hubbub with other industry players. Though all things going well, we’ll only have to wait a week until the new iPhone hits the surgeon’s bench anyway.

Madden NFL 13 sells 1.65 million units its first week

EA has been around for a long time and one of its most popular properties is the Madden NFL football games. Typically, Madden NFL titles are some of EA’s biggest games of the year. EA has offered up some details to go along with the launch recently of the latest game in the franchise, Madden NFL 13.

According to EA Madden 13 is continuing on its record-setting pace by setting new records for sales and fan engagement during its first seven days in retail. The first seven days in retail for the game span August 28 through September 3. EA says that its internal estimates for sales on Madden 13 indicate sales are up 8% year-over-year on HD platforms.

EA reports that 1.65 million copies of the game sold during its first week marking the fastest start ever for the franchise on this console generation. EA had previously announced that Madden 13 had set a new one-day record for HD consoles. EA also offered some player stats noting that during the game’s first week after launch, there was a 31% increase in the number of online games played year-over-year.

EA recorded more than 24 million online games, equivalent to 47,000 NFL regular seasons and seven days of play. On Labor Day alone there was an average of 3000 Madden 13 games started every minute. EA says that during the first week at retail more than 1.4 million fans connected online. There were over 702,000 unique visitors to the enhanced Madden Ultimate Team mode with players opening more than 2.6 million packs and competing in more than 2.2 million challenges. EA also notes that there were 1.3 million unique visitors to the Madden NFL Facebook page and 450,000 mentions of the Madden franchise on twitter.

Windows Phone 8 HTC 8X (aka HTC Accord) details leak

HTC‘s new Windows Phone flagship, until now known as the HTC Accord, will launch as the Windows Phone 8X HTC (aka HTC 8X), according to an insider, complete with a 4.3-inch 720p HD display. The new smartphone, believed to be in the pipeline for a reveal on September 19, will have a 1.2GHz dualcore processor according to tipster Football4PDA, as well as an 8-megapixel camera with an f/2.0 lens.

That camera will pack autofocus, an LED flash, and 1080p HD video recording. Meanwhile, the front-facing camera will supposedly include an “ultra-wide angle” lens, for better video calls, and – unusually – also record 1080p video.

The 8X will also have Beats Audio, as with other recent HTC devices, together with Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, WiFi, GPS and NFC. Connectivity will include a microUSB port and 3.5mm audio socket, and the phone will use a microSIM just like the HTC One X.

Paired with the 1.2GHz dualcore will be 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, while the OS will of course be Windows Phone 8. Those specs are a little milder than Nokia’s new Lumia 920 flagship, revealed earlier this week, though there’s no telling if HTC has a second Windows Phone to launch at the same event.
