LG’s 84-inch 4K ultra high definition TV goes on sale in the US next month for $19,999

LG's 84inch 4K ultra high definition TV goes on sale this month in the US for $19,999

LG said it would release its 84-inch 4K (3,840 x 2,160, or four times the resolution of your current HDTV) UHDTV outside Korea this month and the company confirmed shipments would be on the way during an event at CEDIA 2012 before also announcing an MSRP of $19,999. According to LG the first units will begin shipping this month, with limited availability through the usual high-end sources slated for October. Just as we’d heard, the 84LM9600 includes LG’s passive glasses Cinema 3D technology plus all the Smart TV, WiDi, dual-core L9 processor, 2.2 channel speakers and Magic Remote bells and whistles it can muster.

Of course, even $20k currently doesn’t buy a large selection of publicly available 4K content, although LG was displaying the unit with standard 1080p content to demonstrate its “Resolution Upscaler Plus” capabilities. The 1080p video we watched was sharp and clear on the big LED backlit set, although there was a bit of glare from the lights in the room — not atypical for demo setups that aren’t exactly like most living rooms. In just a few weeks well-heeled consumers will be able to choose between this and the slightly pricier Sony 84-inch 4K TV, with more competition on the way soon. Also an option: a decently equipped 2013 Ford Focus. Check the press release after the break for all the details, we’ll be checking Mark Cuban’s couch cushions for spare change.

Who the Hell Cares About Ads In the New Kindle Fire? [Op-ed]

Some people are whining that the new Kindle Fires shows Amazon’s “special offers” when locked. They’re upset because “I can’t put my own pretty background!” Or “I can’t put the face of my cat!” Or “I can’t cycle through those photos of the Grand Canyon that I took on two years ago when I thought was Ansel Adams.” More »

New Nokia Luna Bluetooth headsets, now with wireless charging

New Nokia Luna Bluetooth headsets, now with wireless charging

So yesterday saw a whole bunch of new Nokia-related goodies. There were phones (of course), charging pillows, a slew of retailers offering charging stations, and a bevy of new apps. One thing that didn’t get a mention was the new Luna Bluetooth headsets. These may look familiar, but in keeping with the trend, these now also support wireless charging. As always, you have a near rainbow of color choices, and can expect up to eight hours talk time and 35 hours on standby. The NFC-enabled headsets do also have a micro-USB port, should you find yourself away from wireless power options. Sadly, no word on pricing and availability at this time.

Dalek Hat Exterminates Wind Chill

So the latest season of Doctor Who kicked off last week with a Dalek episode. And if you saw it, you already know that this episode breaths new life into the Daleks and takes them from being a silly overused villain to making them multi-dimensional bad guys. Well, I can’t think of a better time to buy oneself a Dalek hat.

Official: Sprint Galaxy Nexus getting Jelly Bean update today (update: Nexus S 4G, too)

Official Sprint Galaxy Nexus getting Jelly Bean update today

Well, well, would you look at that? Staying true to what we’d heard yesterday, it appears that long-awaited Android 4.1 refresh is finally making its way to Sprint’s own flavor of the Galaxy Nexus. As expected, the Jelly Bean update brings a slew of familiar, but rather marvelous features to the Now Network’s GNex, including Google Now, an improved notification and voice search system, offline dictation and, of course, a smoother UI that’s made possible by Mountain View’s now-famed Project Butter. Unfortunately, we can’t say the same about the Nexus S 4G, as the 4.1.x goods are still MIA for this device — however, we’ll be sure to let you know if that changes any time soon. In the meantime, those lucky Sprint Galaxy Nexus owners can eagerly “check now” for updates on their handset, and don’t forget to tell us how much you’re liking it so far.

Update: We’re receiving tips that Android 4.1 is now available to Nexus S 4G users, too. Word is that it’s a phased rollout, so check now and then check often. [Thanks, Jesse]

Amazon: the Kindle Keyboard is sticking around

Old habits can be hard to break, and while Amazon made the point pretty clear that it’s shifted toward a world of touch controls on its devoted e-readers, the company hasn’t completely abandoned the Kindle Keyboard. The reader formerly known as the Kindle 3 is still available on Amazon’s page in its 3G form and will continue to be so, at least for the time being, at $139 for the Special Offers version and $189 without. An Amazon spokesperson told us that part of the justification for continuing the offering is the device’s accessibility features.

PayPal App For Windows Phone Released

Although the Windows Phone Marketplace still has a long way to go in terms of competing with App Store or Google Play, it has been able to amass some of the key apps. Latest on that list is the Windows Phone app for PayPal.

The app comes with in sync with the general outlook of Windows Phone, featuring the Modern UI style (aka Metro) which is fast becoming Microsoft’s hallmark. It packs most of the functionality that is being offered by its iOS and Android counterparts. (more…)

Amazon’s 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD impressions

Amazon's 89inch Kindle Fire HD impressions

Hey, check out this beaut. It’s the 8.9-inch version of Amazon’s new Fire HD tablet. The company trotted several of the 7-inch models, but the big daddy was a rare bird indeed — thankfully, however, we were able to get up close and personal with the thing. It’s almost a shame that this guy shares a name with last year’s model. This feels like a completely different bird — Amazon set out to make a slate that can compete with some of the top models out there, and from some passing impressions, this thing seems to stack up. Of course, we’re going to have to wait until we can actually spend some more time with it before passing judgement. Peep some more photos of the newer, bigger Kindle Fire in the gallery below.

This Insulated Blanket Keeps Your Beer Cozy and Cold [Coolers]

Your typical white Eskimo cooler is a cheap way to keep drinks cold and food warm or cold, but it’s not very flexible. And its boxy shape is downright awkward when compared to the Wunder Bundler—an insulated blanket that can wrap up anything from a six-pack of beer to a stack of Chinese takeout containers. More »
