Facebook bug results in messages on friends’ walls that cannot be deleted

Who would have thought that something like a social network could eventually end up with a bug? Sure, Facebook had some sort of snafu in recent memory, and perhaps here is another red-faced moment for the social networking giant. It seems that a Facebook bug has appeared, where once you have blocked a particular person on Facebook, he or she is unable to see whatever content you’ve posted on the social network – and this includes posts that you have made to their own wall. Sounds simple enough in theory, and it did make us wonder what took the world so long to discover such a “bug”.

I guess you cannot really call it a bug per se, but rather, this is working around the rules of the game. Basically, the only way either party is able to view the post again is this – the block must be removed. This could be a particular touchy issue, assuming someone has a photo or other incriminating evidence against someone else, or just someone who wants to flat out act maliciously towards their “target”.

Telia scraps plans to charge extra for mobile VoIP in Sweden, hikes overall rates in compensation

Telia scraps plans to have cellphone users pay extra for VoIP in Sweden, hikes overall rates in compensation

Telia raised hackles in March when it proposed charging Swedish subscribers extra if they wanted to use voice over IP. On top of the net neutrality issues, the proposed price premium would have been a slap in the face to Skype, the country’s homegrown VoIP pioneer. While Telia’s Spanish subsidiary Yoigo has no problems with such a split, Telia itself must have had a change of heart: as of now, all regular plans will continue to treat internet telephony as just another set of data packets. Only a new, ultra-basic Telia Flex Bas plan excises the option. Unfortunately, most everyone will have to pay the price for equality — new subscriptions will have their data plans “adjusted” to compensate for increasing data use, and those paying daily will see their maximum rates jump from 9 SEK ($1.40) to 19 SEK ($2.90). As painful as the price hike might sound, however, we’d still endure it to avoid carving the mobile internet into pieces.

Google data center in Oklahoma to get 48MW of wind power, boost renewable energy in the Sooner state

Google data center in Oklahoma to get 48MW of wind power, boost renewable energy in the Sooner stateGoogle has made a point of relying on renewable resources for its data centers whenever possible, even down to the cooling. It hasn’t had quite as unique an arrangement as what it’s planning for its data center in Oklahoma, though. The search firm wants to supply its Mayes County location with 48MW of wind energy from Apex’s Canadian Hills Wind Project, but it isn’t buying power directly from the source. Instead, it’s making a deal with the Grand River Dam Authority, a utility, to purchase the clean power on top of what’s already supplied from the GRDA at present. The deal should keep the data center on the environmentally friendly side while giving it room to grow. Wind power will come online at Google’s facility once the Canadian Hills effort is up and running later in 2012; hopefully, that gives us enough time to better understand why there’s a Canadian River and Canadian Hills to be found in the southern United States.

Why We Get Motion Sickness [Video]

I’m incredibly jealous of people who can read a book while riding in a car or hang out on a boat in choppy waters or act completely normal on a plane without getting motion sickness. Those bastards. So why is it that the rest of us get motion sickness? It’s an eyes and ears thing, apparently. Watch it. [ASAP Science via Geekosystem] More »

Huawei Ascend P1 LTE named as EE exclusive in UK, other markets to follow

If you’d wondered what Huawei might bring to the table for the launch of the UK’s newly-minted 4G network, your time is up, as the Ascend P1 LTE has been revealed as a national exclusive for EE, with availability in other markets to follow. Like its forebear, the handset features Android 4.0 alongside a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD display and an 8-megapixel camera, although as a nice surprise, it’ll also come with a beefier 2,000mAh battery. There’s no word yet on pricing for the latest entrant, although it seems a safe assumption that all will be revealed in rather short order. In the meantime, you’ll find the remaining details in the PR after the break.

LG Optimus Vu II specs officially unveiled: new CPU, IR, stylus and ‘One Key’ accessory

LG Optimus Vu II specs officially unveiled new CPU, IR, stylus and 'One Key' accessory

Whether or not there’s a 5-inch 4:3 aspect ratio spot in the world to fit LG’s Optimus Vu is still up for debate, but the company is pressing on and has now officially revealed specs for its follow up, the Optimus Vu II. Matching the specs leaked previously the CPU is a Qualcomm MSM8960 that’s a newer design than the previous one, but is still a dual-core chip clocked at 1.5GHz. The RAM has been doubled to 2GB, the battery is just a hair larger at 2,150mAh and it will come with Android 4.0 out of the box plus that integrated IR blaster and QRemote software to control your home theater. The VoLTE capability listed in the leak is here and accounted for, as well as a Rubberdium Pen 2.0 stylus with a thinner, more precise nub. One thing we hadn’t heard about is its optional “One Key” accessory, a waterproof fob intended for your key ring that can be pressed to make your phone beep loudly if you need to find it, and light up blue or red to alert you when there are messages or if it has finished charging. The Optimus Vu II is priced at 966,900 won ($864) in Korea, though we’ll have to wait for a US announcement to have any idea how much it will cost when it ships here.

17 People Who Actually Really Love the New Apple Maps [Apple Maps]

You know how most people who’ve used Google Maps and Apple Maps realize that Apple Maps is inexcusably bad and most definitely inferior? Yeah, these are not those people. These people don’t give a crap what you think. That’s right: even Apple Maps has fanboys. More »

iPhone 5 prank tells it as it is

Gorilla Glass or not, the iPhone 5 might be dubbed to be the “best iPhone yet”, but it sure as heck is not the toughest iPhone out there. After all, how do you rate a device that comes scuffed right out of the box, even before it has been slipped into your pocket? That spells out a poor choice of material and perhaps some quality control issues that need to be looked into, but it still has no negative effect on the sales of the iPhone 5. Well, here is a prank video that AwesomenessTV recorded, pretending to be an Apple employee who clumsily drops the boxes that results in the sound of broken glass, which is not too different from the iMac prank that we saw a while back.

This is going to get old fast though, as how many times can one expect to see the same kind of reaction on the faces of unsuspecting victims? It is going to be the same with new consumer electronics devices, regardless of whether it sports a fruity badge right up front or not.

DIY nano SIM card for unlocked iPhone 5

So you have managed to unlock your iPhone 5 by the book or having taken an alternative route, what next? Obviously, you will need to find some way to fit your current SIM card inside, so there is nothing quite like a DIY effort to reduce the extra baggage around your SIM card right in the comfort of your own home – with the right tools on hand, of course. You will be able to give your micro SIM card a facelift, so to speak, with steady hands and a humble pair of scissors, although folks who want to take no chances and are handy with a blade might settle for that “weapon” of choice instead.

TechnoBuffalo has a template from where you are able to print out and size up the exact nano SIM card, and while there are other guides that claim you might need to enlist the help of a sandpaper to reduce the thickness of the card, it should not be necessary in this case. Did you manage to achieve success following the video tutorial above?

RIM Employee’s OOO Reply This Week Is Both Epic And Inspiring

blackberry_jam_america_2012-e1348599790388

RIM is holding its yearly developers conference this week, playing host to over a thousand developers still dedicated to the BlackBerry platform. The company detailed several novel features to BlackBerry 10 scheduled for release in early 2013. And yes, there was this bad music video, too.

Anyway, a fellow TC editor strangely posted a RIM employee’s OOO reply earlier tonight. He called it both epic and sad. He stated it was delusional, yet awesome. He then laid into this random employee for having a positive outlook and faith in his struggling employer.

This RIM employee deserves better. Much better. He (or she) deserves a pat on the back for sticking to the mission in spite of all the mud that’s been flung. Sure, the OOO reply was a bit over the top, but that’s what it’s going to take to save RIM. And RIM is worth saving.

Hello my friend. I am travelling to San Jose for the biggest mobile developer event of the year – BlackBerry Jam Americas 2012.

If you are in the San Jose/San Francisco are and would like to attend the developer event of the year, please send me an email with the subject of “I want to go to BBJam” and I will get back to you ASAP.

For up to the minute BlackBerry Jam Americas action, please follow us @BlackBerryDev.

Otherwise, if you need me urgently, please feel free to BBM me and I will respond immediately if not sooner. Emails will be dealt with at a later time – most likely by me hitting CTRL-A and deleting them. If it was really that important, you’d BBM me. Or call. Or send me a message on Twitter.

If you don’t need something urgent – then I will respond to this email as soon as possible.

Have a great week!

Let’s take a closer look at this.

…BIGGEST MOBILE DEVELOPER EVENT OF THE YEAR – BLACKBERRY JAM AMERICAS 2012

Simply put, BlackBerry Jam is not the single biggest mobile developer event of the year. RIM tells me 1,500 are in attendance this year. But BlackBerry Jam is the largest BlackBerry event of the year. More telling, attendance is up from last year and nearly double that from previous years. RIM takes a unique approach to developers conferences in that it travels around the world, meeting the developers in their area. The company went on a sort of world tour last year, selling out nearly every venue on its 26 stops.

Besides, there’s nothing wrong with a little excited exaggeration on a random OOO reply.

“I WANT TO GO TO BBJAM”

This might seem strange, but Blackberry apps make money. In fact according to a recent study, BlackBerry apps make more money than Android or iOS apps. Plus, RIM guarantees developers will make $10,000 on their BlackBerry 10 apps within the first year — or it will pay the difference. The company revealed more details about this program at BlackBerry 10 Jam this week. So yeah, devs chasing money probably want to go to BlackBerry Jam.

FOR UP TO THE MINUTE BLACKBERRY JAM AMERICAS ACTION, PLEASE FOLLOW US @BLACKBERRYDEV.

A quick glance at twitter shows that people believe in RIM and are excited to be at BlackBerry Jam. There’s no reason to hate.

As stated earlier today, though this wasn’t in the OOO, I think it’s very telling as to where the company stands today:

We have a clear shot at being the No. 3 platform in the market. Carriers want other platforms. And we’re not just another open platform running on another system. We’re BlackBerry.

This is what RIM CEO Thorsten Heins told the world yesterday. He hasn’t given up. He’s not overselling the company or product. He’s setting a realistic and obtainable goal that will still make everyone involved money. Honesty is a powerful motivator.

A positive attitude goes a long way. This RIM employee should be commended, not berated. He (or she) is excited about RIM and its developers. Hell yeah! Sure, he might have drank the Kool-Aid, but I would rather work with a loyal and dedicated employee than a talented asshole.

None of us here at TechCrunch have any dog in the mobile platform race, yet it’s often perceived differently. It really doesn’t matter to us if Google dominates Apple or if Samsung overtakes Nokia. We don’t care if OS X has a bigger market share than Windows 7. But we do care when companies die.

RIM messed up. They were very late to the game. BlackBerry 10 will hit the market six years after the iPhone debuted. BlackBerry 10 might be too late as Wired says. But that story is old. We’ve told it before. It’s time to move forward, which is exactly what RIM is attempting to do and at least Wall Street is encouraged. And it’s clear RIM’s employees attempting to save the company actually care.
