Cassiopeia Concept Watch: Put the Stars on Your Wrist

Constellations are pretty awesome to look at, that is if you’re not living in a big city. Once you get out of urban areas, you can see plenty of them in the clear night sky. This new concept watch attempts to put a constellation on your wrist, so you can see one even if you live downtown. TokyoFlash design contributor Sam F.’s watch is based upon the Cassiopeia constellation.

With a sleek and minimal bracelet design, the Cassiopeia watch has got a zig-zag display featuring a strip of colorful, twinkling LEDs. The pattern of the LEDs is supposed to mimic the one of the actual constellation.

You can tell the time by counting the number of colored LED lights that are lit up. With the arrangement of LEDs looking almost haphazard, telling the time might take some… time. Anyway, I’m sure that the final display will be streamlined if Tokyoflash ends up making this watch.

Do You Use a Bluetooth Headset With Your Cell Phone? [Chatroom]

The hands-free aspect of using a bluetooth headset with your phone is definitely a plus, but actually wearing one can be kind of a drag. Personally, I always feel like an idiot/jerk wearing one, especially in public. More »

SunVolt Portable Solar Power Station Charges Gadgets at “Outlet-like” Speeds

If you’ve used a consumer-grade portable solar charger, then you know that it takes them a considerable time to do their job. That’s why Don Cayelli invented SunVolt, which he claims can recharge gadgets at “outlet-like” speeds. I think that’s equivalent to about socket-like speeds in metric.

sunvolt portable power station

The SunVolt is available in 10W and 15W variants. Both come in a practical carrying case and will be able to charge any device that draws 5.5V or less, which should cover most if not all of your portable devices. The 10W model has two charging ports, while the 15W model has three. As you’ll see in the video below, the charging ports can be used at once, although I’m not sure if the charging time will be significantly longer compared to using just one port.

A pledge of at least $85 (USD) on Kickstarter gets you a SunVolt.

Google’s Having Some Trouble Filling Up Its Kansas City Fiberhoods [Google Fiber]

Google Fiber’s whopping 1000Mbps Internet connections sure sound sweet, but despite the awesome deals which include free option (after a $300 construction fee), fiber doesn’t seem to be having quite the draw you’d expect. That being the case, Google has lowered some of the pre-registration goals. More »

IRL: Mailplane, Verizon Wireless iPad and the Samsung Galaxy S running CM9

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we’re using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

Do we like the stuff we bought? You betcha we like the stuff we bought. This week, Darren tells of giving Mailplane another shot three months after deciding it was crap. Steve loves his aging Galaxy S all the more now that he’s upgraded it to CM9. As for Edgar, he thinks his new VZW iPad is okay.

If someone pisses you off, let them go. Don’t curse, don’t fight, don’t even hope that they’ll trip and fall flat on their faces as they walk away. Instead, go home and whip out your set of Calligraphuck Profane Letterpress Cards.

CalligraphuckYou probably won’t feel like sending it off in the morning, but hey, at least you got it out of your system. But if you do end up sending it, at least you did it with a touch of class. Well, sort of.

I think you sort of already know what to expect from these cards based on their name alone.

Calligraphuck1

Calligraphucks are beautifully typeset cards emblazoned with a series of curses and profanities that might just make you blush.

The Amazing Story About a Woman Who Needed to Be Upside Down to Stay Alive [Medical Science]

Discover Magazine has an amazing story about how a woman needed to be carried upside down in order to stay alive. It sounds crazy but it’s real. The reason she had to be held upside down was because her pacemaker had become disconnected from her heart and holding her upside down led the pacemaker to be reconnected. More »

Portal Gun Made from Wood, Metal, Glass and a Big Bowl of Awesomesauce

This wouldn’t be the firstmost accurate, or even the first reinterpreted version of the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Gun I’ve ever seen, but it might just be the most awesome. Instead of being made out of slick plastic or fiberglass, this version is handcrafted from more traditional materials.

Sculptor Duncan Shirah created this Portal gun using wood, metal and glass, and it has an elegant look all its own. It’s almost like Chell got transported back to the Victorian era at some point during her time-travel escapades in Portal 2, and was bestowed with this wooden beauty. I wonder what a wooden Wheatley with a glass eyeball would look like? Or a brass GLaDOS?

There’s no indication if Duncan would consider building more of these if you offered him enough money, but you can check out more of his works and get in touch with him over on his website or Facebook.

Tacocopter Basics [Quadrotors]

The Tacocopters are coming. Sure, the original pitch was a clever troll aimed at credulous and impatient fast-food junkies. But the numbers don’t lie – a typical taco weighs less than a pound, and aircraft that can autonomously fly a few dozen ounces of payload to your doorstep are already available for around a thousand bucks. Amazon Prime is cool, and I can’t wait for self-driving delivery cars – but there’s a reason they call a beeline a beeline. Flying autonomous deliverybots are coming. Fast. More »
