HBO Go 1.71 update adds support for Jelly Bean devices

HBO Go 1.71 update adds support for Jelly Bean devices

When it first landed on the Kindle Fire, HBO Go for Android tablets seemed like a dead cert. And, sure enough, it wasn’t long before the service found its way on to slates with version 4.x, with one minor exclusion — those running Jelly Bean. Well, version 1.7.1 puts that all in the past, and now means the full gamut of Android users (unless you never made it past Donut) can join in the fun. Reading this on your Nexus 7? Make haste toward the source link for the download.

This Little Birdie Told Me That It Can Spread Secret Messages Discreetly

Spreading messages in public that only those who are meant to hear them would be pretty hard. Making up your own language to do so would also just make things complicated. So why not use with something like art science student Matthijs Munnik‘s Little Bird, which is a digital bird messaging system of sorts?

Secret Bird MessagesBasically, Matthijs’s digital bird sends out the message in a series of random tweets and chirps. It’s not in Morse code or anything, so you won’t be able to ‘hear’ the message in any way.

However, all you need to decode the message is an app on your smartphone that’ll translate and convert the seemingly random sounds to text. Pretty awesome, right?

The Little Bird installation currently chirps out information from WikiLeaks, probably to push the point forward that it’s meant to be used as a ‘new’ way to transfer information secretly – even though everyone has the potential to access it.

Sounds kind of like WikiLeaks, doesn’t it?

Vibease: The Long-Distance Relationship You Always Wanted

vibrator-medium

We’ve seen quite a few startups try to disrupt relationships lately. There’s Dejamor, which sends you a box of romance each month, Boink Box, which sends you a box of sex toys, and I seem to remember a somewhat embarrassing interview with OhMiBod at CES.

And today, yet another sexy startup joins the space. It’s called Vibease, and it’s a “massager” as they say, that hooks up to your smartphone via Bluetooth. You can text chat, a bit like Pair, while your lover can control your massager from across the country, and vice versa.

The app offers text and picture messaging, along with the ability to create custom vibrations. You can also set a nickname instead of using your real name (God forbid some friend or mom see your name flash across the screen next to “Vibease”).

For the moment, Vibease doesn’t quite have their Bluetooth massager ready for market. “It won’t take long,” they say. But in the mean time, the Vibease app will use the phone’s vibrator “as a tease.” Plus, there’s a “Solo Mode” with ambient noise like Rain or Deep Breathing, which lets you drop it like it’s hot all on your own.

Vibease is only launching on Google Play today, with iOS coming in the near future. The team wants to get traction and feedback on the app before shipping the Bluetooth bunny.

Metal Gear Solid Movie in the Works

Fans of the Metal Gear Solid franchise of games who have been wanting to see Solid Snake on the big screen are apparently getting their wish. MGS is finally becoming a movie. There has been talk about the possibility for a while now – and it is now confirmed.

mgsThe film will be produced by Avi Arad, the producer behind many of the latest Marvel blockbusters (and a few flops too.) It’s too early for any plot details or casting news, but if they do it properly it could be a really good movie. Apparently, the film will be released by Columbia Pictures, which conveniently is owned by Sony.

It will be interesting to see how they will handle the plot for this movie, because they will want to at least make a trilogy I’m sure. The first movie’s plot will need to be perfect enough to ensure additional installments.

IFA 2012 wrap-up: Galaxy Note II, 84-inch 4K TVs, Windows 8 convertibles and much more

IFA 2012 wrapup

Europe’s premier consumer electronics trade show has further cemented its status on the industry’s radar, thanks in no small part to Samsung, Sony and a shocking number of 84-inch 4K TVs. Since Wednesday, we’ve welcomed a brand new Galaxy Note, a healthy heaping of smaller mobile phones, a few cameras (including that Android stunner) and enough laptops and tablets to keep us computing well into the fall. From your perspective, the show ran silky smooth, though Berlin’s mobile data plague continued to take its toll on our productivity, while the Messe’s absolutely insane sprawl left us with a few well-worn shoes. As always, we still had a blast bringing you all the latest gear as it hit the floor, and German hospitality (and beer) made the setbacks a bit more bearable. Since there’s oh so much to get through, we’re sorting out our grouping of news and hands-ons from major manufacturers, followed by some smaller device makers and a few one-hit wonders — all tidied up just past the break.

LG Intuition 4G LTE may become available on Verizon September 6th

LG Intuition may launch on Verizon September 6th

The day of September 6th is gearing up to be a rather hefty one for Verizon: earlier we reported that the Samsung Galaxy Stellar is slated to launch on that date, and it’s also the day after Motorola unveils its latest lineup for Big Red. Why not throw in another device that we’ve heard so much about, such as the LG Intuition? Indeed, docs detailing the CDMA-clad Optimus Vu is now beginning to make the rounds in Verizon’s internal system — and its intended launch date is among the trove of treasures to be found within. According to the docs, we should expect to see the 5-inch device available online in time for the 6th, while all channels won’t be ready to go until the 10th. We can’t imagine that too many people will be upset over having to wait another four days, however.

In terms of specs, here’s what we can anticipate from the Intuition: Ice Cream Sandwich, a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8660 (Snapdragon S3) processor paired with MDM9600 LTE modem and 1GB RAM, Gorilla Glass, a 5-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1024 x 768, 15 hours of talk time, 8MP rear camera with 1.3MP front-facing cam and no microSD expandable storage option. Ultimately, the Intuition is Verizon’s variant of the Optimus Vu, and boasts that commonality right down to the components and design — you won’t find much difference in specs, weight or dimensions between the two. We’ve compiled a few images for your enjoyment, so head below to see. As before, we had to be creative in how we treated these images to protect the identity of everyone involved.

Eight-year-old UK Boy Chunk of Whale Vomit Worth $60,000+

An eight-year-old boy in the UK was taking a stroll along the beach at Hengistbury Head. He discovered what he thought was a large rock laying on the beach and pick it up to carry home. The boy and his parents couldn’t identify the odd rock and later found out it wasn’t a rock at all.

whale puke

The waxy feeling, sweet smelling rock turned out to be a chunk of ambergris – also known as whale vomit. Yes, seriously. That yellow rock the boy is holding in the picture is whale puke. That may be the most disgusting thing I’ve seen all day. As it turns out whale vomit is rare and highly sought after in the perfume industry.

The material helps the scent of her perfume last longer and is worth as much as £6,300 (~$10,000 USD) per pound. The chunk the boy has is estimated to be worth £40,000 (~$63,000 USD). The lad hopes to sell the chunk of vomit and use the money for something along the lines of an animal shelter.

7 Deadly Weapons You Should Never Ever Make Out of Harmless Household Items [How To]

I write a lot about edgy, semi-dangerous scientific projects. So, I get a lot of suggestions from people who want to share their own ideas for risky home projects. I like the reader engagement, but four times out of five, the ideas are dumb, and borderline deadly. Listen to me: if it involves a pipe, match heads, and gasoline, I guarantee you, it’s a bad idea.
