Samsung is looking to buy its way to excellent software

Samsung Electronics is a massive conglomerate that makes everything from internals (like the iPhone processor) to TVs and smartphones. But their weak link has always been the quality of their software–the Galaxy S3 is a beautiful phone, but many of its Samsung software add-ons and Touchwiz its self are disappointing. But they’re looking to fix that, and are willing to spend some money to do it. A senior Samsung executive told Reuters:

“The message we’re getting from the top is to raise software capability, and buy rather than build, if needed,” Kang Tae-jin, senior vice president of Samsung’s Media Solution Center, said in an interview. “Our focus on software is primarily aimed at driving hardware sales, rather than making money. We have a full range of handsets in so many countries, and, to better market our products, we thought it’s better to start our own software business.”

There are challenges to buying software companies and keeping them productive. Last year, Samsung bought online music service mSpot and rolled it into their own Music Hub service. In the past, Apple bought mapping companies shortly before releasing Apple Maps, and you know how that’s gone. But in an increasingly commodified Android hardware market, Samsung needs something to differentiate it from the Motorolas and the HTCs, and that something is increasingly looking like software. Here’s hoping they buy something better than an Android skin.

iPhone 5 seeks approval for China

It appears that Apple has gotten the China Compulsory Certificate for the iPhone 5 in a couple iterations, both of them quite possibly headed for China Telecom. The first of these will likely be the global GSM model – here in the approval found by Sina marked as WCDMA phone model A1429. The second is a CDMA2000 version model number A1442 of the device – this will likely be a brand new model of the iPhone as the current CDMA iPhone 5 (A1429) does not currently have China Telecom in its listing of networks. Of course there’s always the future.

The iPhone 5 will likely be available across much of China by the end of 2012. With China Unicom also already noting that they’ll have the device by the end of the year, we’ll see more than one major carrier working with the device. Apple has not been shy in the past year about making their move into and across China a priority as it is at the moment for them a relatively untapped market. China is already a place where users are able to purchase the iPhone 5 on the “grey market”, so to speak, but they aren’t currently able to purchase a device at retail.

This device is sweeping across the United States and the UK and bits of Europe rather soon, and the whole world will be in the iPhone 5 love bubble sooner than later. We’ve got an iPhone 5 full review for your perusal if you like, and there’s always the iPhone 5 tag portal for your enjoyment as well. This device has already sold more than 5 million units over its opening weekend and is on track to set each other iPhone sales record in the dust.

For those of you interested in picking up an iPhone 5 in the near future and are interested in what you’ll need to know about its operating system, you can check the iOS 6 changelog as well as our iPhone 5 software rundown – which was a pre-event post, but remains true today. The iPhone 5 will be running iOS 6 out of the box, but if you already own an iPhone 4S, iPad 3, or something similar, you can update your system wirelessly today for free – just hit the settings!

Scoot aims to be Zipcar of electric scooters, launches in SF

DNP Scoot aims to be Zipcar of electric scooters, launches in SF

Aiming to be the Zipcar of electric scooters, Scoot Networks has officially launched in San Francisco after months of beta testing. Ideal for areas with problematic parking, the Chinese-made scooters are 100 percent electric with a 20Ah SLA battery each, and there’s even a dock built into the dash to charge most Android or iPhone models. With a screaming top speed of 30 miles per hour, they’re obviously meant for short trips and not for the highway. It costs $10 to sign up, $5 per month, then $5 per hour. You can also get a $10 per day deal or a $19 per month option that includes three workdays or overnights. Even though you don’t need a motorcycle license to rent one, the company does offer tutorials to get newbies comfortable with the vehicles. If you do have a license, you can opt for the $185 a month plan that lets you get your own personal scooter. A potential issue is that the battery on the electric scooter only lasts around 20 to 30 miles, but San Francisco might have enough EV-friendly parking spots to make that less of a problem. You can watch the company’s promo video after the break.

Samsung Galaxy S III coming to MetroPCS

Samsung‘s flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III will officially be making its way to MetroPCS starting in October. Of course, the S III has been around for a few months already on a number of carriers, but if you’ve been interested in picking one up at a smaller regional carrier, now is the time to do so.

The Galaxy S III will be the most powerful smartphone that MetroPCS has ever offered. The device comes with a 4.8-inch SuperAMOLED 720p display and runs off of a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5GHz. It also packs 2GB of RAM and an 8MP rear camera capable of shooting 720p video.

It also has all the amenities anyone could ask for, like Wi-Fi, 4G capabilities, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, and a barometer. If you’ve never played around with a Galaxy S III before, we recommend giving our full review a look-over and even watching our hands-on video below.

You can also check out our many hands-on sessions with different versions of the Galaxy S III, including AT&T’s and T-Mobile’s versions, as well as Verizon’s version that comes packing with 4G LTE. Samsung also just recently started rolling out Jelly Bean to the Galaxy S III, which will certainly be a nice addition to a phone that’s already pretty great. We ended up getting a hands-on on with a Jelly Bean version as well.

The exact date that the Galaxy S III will be available at MetroPCS is unknown, but we’re sure we’ll hear more about it soon, since the first of the month is just right around the corner and anxious minds will certainly want to know when they start to use this bad boy on a cheaper carrier. To celebrate, MetroPCS is hosting a giveaway where participants will have a shot at winning a free Galaxy S III.

Is Your iPhone 5 Camera Seeing Purple? [Iphone5]

The latest iPhone 5 defect claim to emerge from the mists is the issue of purple flares appearing in camera images where lighting is particularly bright. The issue was first pointed out in the AnandTech forums, and apparently Apple has acknowledged the issue. Plus looking at testing done by Mashable, the issue seems like anything but an isolated incident. More »

Google Maps add underwater Street View for coral reefs

Ever wanted to see the great coral reefs of the world but don’t have the time, money, or expertise to fly down to Australia and go scuba diving? Google, along with the Catlin Seaview Survey, have taken hundreds of panoramic photos down below and have posted the resulting pictures online in Google’s Street View interface. The photos were taken with a specially designed 360-degree camera, the Seaview SVII, which is a lot like an underwater version of Google’s Street View cameras. In addition to a 360-degree image, the camera captures geolocation and direction, so it’s possible to create a detailed map with the photos. Initially, the underwater photos were taken to document the condition of the world’s reefs, but Google and Catlin Seaview realized that posting them online can bring a whole lot of joy beyond environmental preservation. You can check out diving sites in the Phillipines, Hawaii, and Australia at maps.google.com/ocean today.

TweetDeck for the web slips in expanded tweets, header photos

TweetDeck is Twitter’s professional desktop client, though you might not always know it given that the app is sometimes out of step with its more pedestrian siblings. Today, Twitter is presenting a unified front in a more timely fashion. The web versions of TweetDeck now show the expanded tweets and header photos that reached the iPad and mobile apps a week ago. No major surprises are waiting in the wings save for the absence of a matching update to the native Mac and Windows apps — hopefully, that’s a gap that closes soon.

Doctor Who Silence Plush, Cuddliness Will Fall

You may not have any memory of it, but The Silence played a big part in series 6 of Doctor Who. That’s what those tally marks on your arm are all about. This Doctor Who Silence plush is pretty cute, despite having no arms or legs.
silence
This Silence plush is so soft that the only threat he has is that cuddliness will fall and you will hug him close. He’s cute, he’s cuddly, still a bit creepy and he’s no threat at all to you or your other plush toys. This armless and legless Silence was made by crafter Suzannah Ashley.

He stands 15″ tall and will be shown off soon over at Shmancy in Seattle. Great job Suzannah. As for the rest of you, as soon as you look away from this article, you will forget he ever existed. You might want to mark your arm.

ASUS teases Jelly Bean update coming to Transformer Pad Prime and Infinity within 72 hours

ASUS teases Jelly Bean update coming to Transformer Pad Prime and Infinity 'soon'

Oh, ASUS. While it was so forthcoming with an update to Jelly Bean for the Transformer Pad TF300, it has been shy about upgrading the tablet’s higher-end cousins. The company must be coming out of its shell: it just posted a teaser for Jelly Bean updates coming to the Transformer Pad Prime TF201 (formerly the Eee Pad Transformer Prime) and the flagship Transformer Pad Infinity TF700. ASUS was initially hesitant to say more than that it would come “soon,” but Technical Marketing Manager Gary Key has stepped in to confirm that North America will get the update within a surprisingly quick 72 hours. The only glaring omission is a matching refresh for the original Eee Pad Transformer to give veteran owners a little TLC.
