The Wii U will launch with 23 titles

In the United States, the Wii U will launch on November 18. But what good is a console if there’s nothing to play on it? Today, Nintendo confirmed 23 launch titles, which is significantly more games than either the Wii or the Nintendo 64 launched with. Even better, there are some notable third-party games included with the always-excellent Nintendo games that come at the beginning of a system. Here your Wii U launch titles:

Apple orders carbon fiber en masse

The Apple product universe is such at the moment that every little detail is analyzed down to the makeup of the tablet casings – and now that makeup has been touted as changing drastically in the near future. The Japanese news source known as Macokatara has let it be known that sources speaking from their own carbon fiber production company have had Apple ordering “large” samples of their product very recently. Apple also recently had a patent granted for “carbon composite mold design” which includes a process for mass-producing carbon fiber molds – and a Reinforced Device Housing patent as well.

This news doesn’t mean that Apple will soon be working with the same weaves we see on the backs of the Motorola DROID RAZR family of devices. It doesn’t mean that we’ll be seeing changes to the exteriors of Apple products in the future because of their makeup. Instead it means that, if it’s all true of course, Apple products will be getting rougher and tougher and lighter, too!

Apple always makes a point to increase the overall greatness of each product rather than focusing especially hard on one-upping any other product on the market. If one takes the iPhone 5 and compares it spec-by-spec to the competition, you’ll find a display that’s smaller than some and a body that’s not the thinnest in the universe – but the final word is that the smartphone sold 5 million units in its opening weekend. That’s a weekend of sales to people who purchased the device solely on the looks, and promises its creator made.

Here with a new carbon fiber-toting makeup for the casing in perhaps not the future iPhone, but the iPad and the MacBook Pro amongst others, you’ll find another single element in a larger puzzle. It’s not out of the question that Apple would be looking into futuristic concoctions for their products here in 2012, not out of the question at all. Expect advanced casings for your larger Apple hardware in the next few years – expect them!

NOTE: Apple has also recently posted a Senior Carbon Engineer job in Japan as well. Time to get carbonized!

Humble Indie Bundle 6 comes packing with Torchlight, Bit.Trip Runner, and more

If you’re a gamer who enjoys indie games while also saving money, then you’ve no doubt heard of the Humble Indie Bundle. It’s in its sixth rendition already and it comes with some pretty sweet titles. The best part is, you can pay whatever you want for the set of games. Only want to spend a penny? No problem! However, at least think about paying a little more, since the funds go to the Child’s Play charity.

Humble Indie Bundle 6 comes with Rochard, Shatter, S.P.A.Z., Torchlight, and Vessel. However, if you pay more than the average giving price (which is currently $6.08 as of this writing), you’ll also get Dustforce, Bit.Trip Runner, Gratuitous Space Battles, Jamestown, and Wizorb. This means you can get ten games for the price of at least $6 and some change.

On top of the games, you’ll also receive the soundtracks to nine of the games (Vessel excluded). Ten games and nine soundtracks sounds pretty good to me. They say it would cost you $135 if you bought all of this content at retail price, so we can’t really find a reason to say no.

All the games work on Windows and Mac. This is also the first time that all the games in the Humble Indie Bundle are supporting Linux. You can also import these into Steam. After your purchase, you’ll receive redeem keys to enter into Steam. After that, Steam will import these games into your library and you’ll be able to play them through the client.

Here’s a Galaxy-Shooting Camera You Might Actually Afford [Cameras]

How do photographers get those absolutely stunning photos of the stars? Not by aiming a point-and-shoot at the sky. To zoom into galaxies far away you not only need specialized glass—you need the right type of image sensor in your camera. And while they don’t come cheap, at least now they come… cheaper. More »

FTC declines to fine companies who sold 10000s of laptops with spyware preinstalled

Earlier today, we noted an FTC settlement which shows that seven rent-to-own business sold PCs with installed spyware that secretly collect consumer information. The software is designed by a possibly-defunct company called DesignerWare, and the FTC estimates that over 420,000 computers had included a utility called “Rental Agent,” which included a feature called “Detective Mode,” which not only included a keylogger but the ability to access the computer’s webcam. Creepy. This is one of the biggest corporate invasions of privacy in recent memory and the FTC report issues no fines and finds no criminal culpability.

FXI’s Cotton Candy finally starts to ship, hopes your sugar rush remains (video)

Way back at CES, FXI’s Cotton Candy was a sweet looking slice of Android and / or Linux mini-PC. Since then, the pendroid club has seen quite a few more join its number. However, if you were one of the faithful that got on-board with FXI’s particular take on the form-factor early, then that little box of ARM Cortex A9 joy is finally available to buy. We’ve received word that pre-orders are now finally ready to be fulfilled, with early buyers getting developer versions. This of course means that you might pay a small price for such eager adoption, with a list of limitations including mixed video playback and streaming support, as well as potential issues with power from USB hosts. That said, we suspect that if you’ve been able to wait this long, these are small prices to pay, along with the $199 asking price, naturally. Give the source a whirl to get your teeth into one now.

[Thanks, Michael]

RIM shares rise after yesterday’s BlackBerry Jam

Yesterday, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins took the stage in San Jose to talk about some of the upcoming features in BlackBerry 10. Though RIM is taking its sweet time bringing BlackBerry 10 to market, Heins did have some good news to report, telling the audience that BlackBerry users have grown to 80 million, up from 78 million from previous quarter. In addition to delivering that glimmer of hope for the struggling company, Heins also showed off a handful of new features that will be present in BlackBerry 10, and that address seems to be sitting well with investors today.

RIM’s stock is trading up today, breaking the $7 mark earlier for a gain of about 7%. Of course, it fluctuated throughout the remainder of the day, resting at $7.00 even (6.06% gain) by the time the closing bell signaled the end of the regular trading day on Wall Street. That is definitely good news for RIM, which has been losing market share at a pretty steady rate ever since iOS and Android took over the smartphone scene.

RIM is counting on BlackBerry 10 to pull it out of this rut, with Heins saying yesterday that the new mobile OS has a shot at becoming a solid third behind iOS and Android. BlackBerry recently fell below 5% market share, which is a far cry from where it was at when BlackBerry mania was in full swing. In all, RIM’s stock has fallen 90% in value from its peak, which signals that some major changes need to happen before users leave the company behind entirely and it goes the way of the dinosaurs.

Make no mistake, BlackBerry 10 certainly looks like a solid OS, but the question on everyone’s mind is whether it will be a strong enough contender to bring RIM back from the brink. We’ll find out the answer to that question soon enough, but for now, we’ll just let the executives at RIM revel in today’s victories. Check out or story timeline below for more posts on RIM and BlackBerry 10.

Here Are The 23 Nintendo Wii U Launch Titles

nintendo-wii-u-gamepad (1)

The Nintendo Wii U launches on November 18 with the support of 23 games. Nintendo stated previously that there would be 50 available before March 31, so, relatively so, the Wii U is launching with a strong amount of games including New Super Mario Bros U, Call of Duty: Black Ops II and, yes, Nintendo Land, the game Nintendo hopes will be the Wii Sports of its new console (it won’t).

Nintendo revealed and demoed many of these titles at its E3 2012 press conference. Nintendo Land is a strange consortium of mini games and social elements. The company stated over and over again that the title is the Wii U’s Wii Sports, but after seeing the presentation and playing some of the games on the show floor, we’re not convinced it has the same magic.

Many of the titles below showcase the Wii U’s novel touchscreen controller. By building in a secondary screen, the Wii U controller can act like a backpack in an RPG, gun sight in a FPS or a playbook for sports games.

The Wii U will come in two versions. The basic version will cost $299 and comes packing the Wii U controller and a console with 8GB storage. Or, buyers can opt for the $349 Deluxe Set, which includes 32GB of local storage, a Wii U controller charging cradle, Wii U console stand and a copy of Nintendo Land.

Rechargeable Speakers with a Twist

If memory serves I was gifted my first pair of portable speakers. And boy have I used the heck out of them. I never thought of all the uses prior to the kind gift: tunes at the desk or in the kitchen, watching movies on the tablet or movie. And boy, were they a life saver on the road. No road warrior should be without a set. But toting batteries with you is inconvenient. iHome, makers of various a/v products, added a couple twists to the portable speaker concept that is worth a look.

The iHM62, $49.96 on Amazon, brings practicality and fun to the world of portable speakers. These collapsible speakers come with a 2 in 1 cable enabling charge from a USB device and output via standard 3.5mm audio plug. The lithium ion battery will get you 2 hours of playback – enough to typically get you back to a power source. The vacuum bass design gives hearty volume and bass too. But the fun angle of these speakers is the fact they change color – green, red, blue, yellow. Single color and color fade modes also exist if you are not in the mood for changing color. With the collapsible, handheld design and a carry pouch the iHM62 travels well too. You know you need portable speakers, why not make them rechargeable? And add a little color to your life at the same time.

Reverse Graffiti Pen Lets You Clean Up the Same Streets You’re Defiling [Graffiti]

You can’t be arrested for vandalizing your neighborhood when technically you’re cleaning it up—right? That’s the general idea behing the Grime Writer pen. It’s an oversized felt tip marker that you crack open and fill with soapy water, instead of ink. So when you tag the side of a building, technically you’re just removing years of grime and filth.
