Foursquare update notifies you of your friends/family check-ins even if they’re overseas

If you have a spouse who travels often, or if your child is traveling overseas for the first time, foursquare has an update for you that allows you to receive notifications for select profiles even if they check into locations that aren’t near you, such as in other countries or in different states. According to foursquare’s blog, this feature will work even if you have turned off notifications, which we guess in a way would be like putting those select friends/family on an exclusion list. To enable it, all you’d have to do is log onto your foursquare profile on their website, surf on over to your friend/family’s profile and select “Always On” from the drop down menu. While we’re sure that this was designed with good intentions in mind, we can’t help but feel that stalking just got a whole lot easier.

Blackberry L-series design confirmed in latest Dev Alpha beta?

There have been a couple of leaks in the past of RIM’s upcoming Blackberry L-series handset, a device that will feature a full touchscreen display and will run on Blackberry 10. Given that RIM has yet to officially take the wraps off the device, some are speculating that the leaked photos might not be the finished product, or that we could be looking at fakes.

Well the good news is that if you were hoping that the photos were real, you might be in luck thanks to a recent Blackberry 10 beta update that RIM has pushed out to their developers who have the Dev Alpha device. Hidden in the beta, there is a tutorial video which reveals the bottom portion of what many are assuming is the Blackberry L-series, and based on what we can see, this more or less confirms what the upcoming Blackberry L-series will look like.

Sharp unveils semi-transparent solar panels, lets you see the sun while reaping its benefits

Sharp unveils semi-transparent solar panels, lets you see the sun while reaping its benefits

Sharp has announced an unusual photovoltaic panel for the Japanese market that collects energy from the sun while still allowing the light to shine on through. Though it’s rated at a lowly 6.8 percent / 98 watt max efficiency, the glass-like properties make it useful as a construction material (as shown in the balcony railing above), with the semi-transparent nature giving occupants privacy, to boot. The energy-producing cells are embedded in a laminated glass structure and an air slot provides a thermal barrier, allowing the panels to also be used as “windows, curtain wall and eaves” according to Sharp’s PR. Though the system won’t win any potency prizes, it has garnered a design award in Japan, so it won’t blight any landscapes. There’s no mention of pricing or western availability so far, but you can hit the source for all the technical details.

iPhone 5 versus Canon EOS 5D MK III in camera shoot out

With our smartphone cameras these days being more than capable of replacing some point-and-shoot models, we’re sure that there are some who are wondering how our smartphone cameras will hold up against more professional DSLR cameras. Dustin Curtis of Svbtle decided to put Apple’s latest iPhone 5 to the test by holding an informal shoot with the Canon EOS 5D MK III, a $4,000 professional grade camera.

How did it fare? Surprisingly despite some pretty obvious flaws such as excessive noise on the photos taken by the iPhone 5, some lacking in detail and sharpness, it holds its own pretty well when resized to more popular formats for web viewing (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, etc.). We doubt you will see iPhone 5s start replacing DSLRs in professional photo shoots anytime soon, but if you’ve always been curious as to how Apple’s latest iPhone measures up against a DSLR, head on over to Svbtle for the full sized photos.

Toshiba Ships First MQ01ABDH Hybrid Series Drive

Toshiba is one of the biggest names in storage products, and it offers a wide range of internal storage devices and external storage devices. Toshiba has announced that it has started shipping its first Hybrid Drive MQ01ABDH series (PDF) storage devices. These new Hybrid Drives combine the performance of a SSD with the capacity and pricing of a traditional HDD.

Toshiba offers the drives with capacities of up to 1 TB, and the drives are 2.5-inch form factor with a 9.5 mm height. The new Hybrid Drives use SATA connectivity and have self-learning caching algorithms to learn the data access patterns of the user and optimize performance. These algorithms determine what data should be stored in the flash memory for quick access and what data should be stored on the traditional magnetic platters.

The hybrid drive is initially available in 1 TB and 750 GB capacities. Toshiba says the drives are sized for use in ultrathin and standard notebooks, gaming PCs, AIOs, and slim desktops. The hard drive portion of the Hybrid Drives spins at 5400 RPMs and has an average seek time of 12 ms.

On 1 TB and 750 GB capacity Hybrid Drives the amount of NAND Flash storage is 8 GB. Toshiba says that the design of the Hybrid Series storage devices will enable faster system boot times and faster data access. Pricing on the new drives is unannounced at this time.

Samsung: Galaxy S III remote wipe flaw is already patched

Galaxy S III owners running the latest software are not susceptible to a factory-reset hack that could maliciously wipe the phone, Samsung says, with a recent patch blocking the exploit. Security researchers identified a flaw in how Samsung TouchWiz devices handled so-called USSD codes, with the potential for rogue websites to push a factory-reset code to the smartphone which required no user-confirmation to enact.

The fear, the researchers argued, was that a QR or NFC reader app set to automatically load URLs could automatically take the Samsung device to a page hosting the USSD trigger, should the user inadvertently scan it. A more complex variation of the attack could also include remotely blocking the SIM card in the handset.

However, testing of the exploit revealed mixed results, with some able to replicate the researchers’ findings on the Galaxy S III, but others unable to. That appears to be down to what version of the phone’s firmware you’re running, with Samsung recently filling in the security gap with an OTA update.

“We would like to assure our customers that the recent security issue concerning the GALAXY S III
has already been resolved through a software update” Samsung told SlashGear today. “We recommend all GALAXY S III customers to download the latest software update, which can be done
quickly and easily via the Over-The-Air (OTA) service.”

It’s not clear whether other Samsung devices using TouchWiz have also been patched; we’re waiting on clarification from Samsung. However, the advice as always is to be wary of clicking on unknown links, and consider using a browser other than Android’s default, as Chrome and others proved to be not susceptible to the USSD exploit.

Samsung rumored to launch Galaxy smartphone based on Tizen

It is safe to assume that Samsung’s decision to go with Android certainly netted them more success when compared to their earlier attempts with Bada, Samsung’s own mobile platform. However according to recent reports via Digitimes, it has been suggested that Samsung has plans to launch a Galaxy smartphone that will be based on the Tizen platform. This will be a first considering that Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones have typically been based on Android.

While it is merely a rumor at this point in time, it isn’t that much of a stretch considering that Samsung had reportedly tested Tizen on its Galaxy S3, plus with Huawei looking to launch its own mobile operating system as a backup plan, such speculation isn’t exactly ludicrous. No word on when this alleged Tizen-based Galaxy smartphone will launch, but what do you guys think?

Scratches on the iPhone 5 are “normal”, according to Phil Schiller

The other day we reported that some iPhone 5 owners had stated that their iPhone units were damaged out of the box. According to some, this is due to Apple’s choice of anodized aluminum instead of stainless steel, with the former not only being lighter, but apparently softer which makes it more susceptible to scratches. Naturally after forking out a few hundred dollars for a new phone, many users are upset about this. (more…)
