Nook HD and Nook HD+, hands-on

Barnes and Noble strikes back against Amazon with the Nook HD and Nook HD+, two very affordable devices designed by B&N to provide what the company considers to be the “optimum experience” for their customers – that’s how the new Nook HD and Nook HD+ were born. In terms of overall user experience, it is clear that those Nook devices have been built for a more focused purpose in mind than generic tablets like the Nexus 7 and the iPad. Both are considered to be “family” devices, which means that they have built-in multi-user management, and strong parental controls, something which is typically poorly supported by most “personal” tablets.

Google Maps to arrive on iPhone and iPad

Hmmm, it seems as though a figurative game of Pong is being played where Google Maps on Apple devices are concerned. First, we heard that the Google Maps app has yet to be submitted to Apple for approval, while shortly later in the morning, there was word that Google will not be developing Google Maps for iOS 6. Right before we call it a day, here we are with word that Google Maps will eventually arrive on the iPhone and iPad, where the entire process will take another two months at the very least.

It seems as though Google is working on a maps application for the iPhone and iPad, keeping their fingers crossed that everything will be done and completed before the year is over. This does seem to be in stark contrast to what we heard earlier this morning, so it will definitely be interesting to see what there is in store for iOS 6 users who pine for the good old days when Google Maps was on the iPhone. Seems to be a love-hate relationship going on here, is it not?

Birds with backpacks assist researchers in studying migratory patterns

I suppose the image of picturing birds with backpacks tend to see my mind be drifted to Daffy Duck or Donald Duck carrying a backpack, but in real life, things are very different as researchers from the University of British Columbia have strapped a couple of British Columbia subspecies of Swainson’s thrushes with penny-sized, state-of-the-art geolocators, in order to help them map out the birds’ wildly divergent migration routes as well as discover the exact location of the secret Rebel base, wait a minute there, I meant, conservation hotspots.

Kira Delmore, a PhD student with UBC’s Department of Zoology and lead author of the paper, said, “Birds of a feather do not necessarily flock together. Our teams of thrushes took dramatically different routes to get to their wintering grounds, either south along the west coast to Central America, or southeast to Alabama and across the Gulf of Mexico to Columbia.”

Good thing the geolocators do not run on Apple’s Maps app, as researchers might then be on the end of a gingerbread trail that could have led them to the Arctic circle instead.

FreedomPop iPhone sleeve gives iPod touch limited phone capabilities

We have seen our fair share of iPod touch accessories in the past that actually enabled the iPod touch to function somewhat like a phone, although most of the time, it was limited to just VoIP calls and the ilk. Well, the FreedomPop is a $99 iPhone sleeve case which claims to transform your 4th generation iPod touch into an iPhone, offering 1GB of free data each month that ought to be more than enough to handle basic email and iMessage texting needs. Not only that, when you think about it, there are no contractual commitments to be tied down to, which is a good thing, is it not?

Just how does FreedomPop achieve this? Well, FreedomPop relies on a 4G LTE hotspot that has been constructed right into the case, so that the iPod touch can gain access to the Internet at extremely high speeds, over Wi-Fi if necessary as well. Heck, you can even be your very own hotspot if you want to. Of course, this is one pseudo-convergence device that you might want to overlook if a dedicated smartphone is what you have on your shopping list.

Mach inks carrier billing deal with Everything Everywhere, O2, Vodafone and Three in the UK

Mach inks carrier billing deal with Everything Everywhere, O2, Vodafone and Three in the UK

Not a month after Mach’s last carrier billing deal, UK network providers Vodafone, Three, O2 and Everything Everywhere are getting in on the action. The company’s direct billing solutions will initially allow the networks to charge app and online purchases straight to your bill, with in-app sales joining them at a later date. Don’t expect this to be implemented immediately, however, as the agreement covers the back-end processing — the individual carriers will be responsible for turning it on customer-side. They’ll likely inform you when they hit the switch and your phone bill becomes a monthly surprise.

Rabbi orders followers to burn iPhones, Android devices go unscathed?

84-year old Chaim Kanievsky, an influential ultra-Orthodox Israeli rabbi, decreed to his followers to set fire to their iPhones as part of a rather extreme campaign to ensure that the outside world remains at bay, targeting the Internet in particular. This decree was announced before Judaism’s holiest day, Yom Kippur, which kicked off earlier today. It seems that owning the iPhone was forbidden, and those who already had one must actually burn theirs. The verdict concerning the iPhone? “It takes over your life. It takes over your mind.” I don’t suppose that this decree came about after the good rabbi failed to find his way around town after Apple Maps led him into thinking that the Dead Sea was actually the Sea of Galilee. I don’t think that this rather extreme self-proclaimed sanction against the iPhone is going to Apple’s bottomline in any way, and I am extremely curious as to know just what the rabbi’s stance is on Windows Phone 8, BlackBerry and Android-powered devices.
