Fox Broadcast app now available to Xbox Live customers with Dish and FiOS subscriptions

FOX Broadcast app now available to Xbox Live customer with Dish and FiOS subscriptions

Xbox Live frontman Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson) took to his blog on Tuesday to announce that Dish and Verizon FiOS customers can now download the Fox Broadcast app for Xbox 360 to stream next-day Fox programming. In order to use this free app, you’ll need a paid Xbox Live Gold subscription. In addition to keeping you up to date with recent episodes of Fringe and Family Guy, this new app also includes access to legacy series such as House and 24. Like most things Xbox, the Fox Broadcasting app features Kinect integration, because everything is “better with Kinect,” right?

I’m totally not suggesting that you do this yourself but if you’re so very worried about scratching the iPhone 5 and/or a close follower of scuffgate, or whatever they call it these days, know this: stuff scratches. Especially stuff made from aluminum. The iPhone 5 is no different. More »

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 25, 2012

We’ve had a rather interesting Tuesday here at SlashGear, thanks in no small part to RIM. The company held its BlackBerry Jam today, introducing us to new BlackBerry 10 features like Peek and Flow. We also learned that BlackBerry 10 will come with support for your favorite social networks, even offering a native Facebook app. Carrier testing on the new mobile OS will begin next month, and RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said that BlackBerry has a good shot at becoming number three behind Android and iOS.

We found out today that Apple’s new Lightning adapters come with an authentication chip built in, and that New York City is experiencing a sharp increase in the number of Apple thefts. Apple’s Phil Schiller said that the scuffs and scratches some users are experiencing with their iPhone 5s are normal, and a teardown of the iPhone 5′s A6 processor provided some fresh insight into what’s going on under the hood. There’s a new way for you to bypass the 3-4 week wait for an iPhone 5 to be delivered to your home, and Instagram was updated with support for iOS 6 while Google delivered its own iOS update for Google Voice.

The Samsung Galaxy Note II will be launching in the UK on October 1, and speaking of Samsung, we heard whispers that the company is planning to launch a Tizen-based Galaxy smartphone. New reports are saying that the Kindle Fire HD is in for some serious competition from the Google Nexus 7, and Microsoft’s Kinect could potentially help save lives in a new map making gadget. Intel’s CEO claims that Windows 8 is being released with a number of bugs left unfixed, and Tesla has slashed its profit forecast after its new Model S hit some bumps in production.

Google Maps apparently won’t be coming to iOS 6 until Apple offers an invitation, and the Jaguar F-TYPE suffered a very sexy leak today. Box has issued an update for its iOS app and it’s offering some free stuff to all iOS users, while some labor experts are warning that there could be more Foxconn riots in the future. Sony announced today that a number of October retail releases will be on PSN from launch day, and is even offering PS Plus subscribers a 10% discount on the purchase price of most of them. Finally tonight, Gameloft has released a new trailer for Modern Combat 4, and we have to say that we were pretty impressed.

That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up! Enjoy the rest of your night everyone!

This Hat Will Never Lose Its Shape Because It Cannot Be Crushed [Fashion]

The Crushable Baseball Cap is designed to hold its shape no matter where you put it, cram it, fold it, crush it and so forth. Any amount of abuse and it’s still going to look like a baseball cap. If you’ve tried to pack your hats before, you’d know how deformed, dented and even demented those hats can get after a long trip. More »

TransPhone smartphone / tablet hybrid gets official, doesn’t quite topple ASUS PadFone

TransPhone yet another smartphonetablet combo

It looks like CMIT’s TransPhone smartphone-tablet combo has finally made it to stores after its debut in May of last year. A competitor to the ASUS PadFone, the TransPhone fits inside a 7-inch display dubbed the TransPad, and runs Android 2.3.5. The TransPhone has a 3.5-inch screen, a Snapdragon S1 processor, 512MB RAM and ROM, 512MB internal memory plus a 32GB microSD card, a 5-megapixel camera, and more. As for price, a TransPhone plus TransPad combo is $429.99 while individual TransPads are $140 each and a solo TransPhone is $379. You can even go hog wild and get a Family Pack for $999 or a Business Pack for $4499. Seeing as the ASUS PadFone adds a keyboard to the mix, and that there’s a PadFone 2 coming up soon, we have a feeling the TransPhone won’t be much of a threat to ASUS.

YouTube-funded TV show will air on ABC in October

There are tons of YouTube channels that crank out awesome videos every week (The Slingshot Channel being one of my favorites), and we wish that some of them would become full-fledged TV shows. It looks like that’s about to become a reality for one YouTube channel in particular. Everyday Health will receive its own TV show starting in October.

The Everyday Health YouTube channel is taking one of their most popular video series and turning it into a broadcast TV show. It’s called Recipe Rehab and it will begin airing on ABC networks starting in October. The show will be fully funded by YouTube, and it will mark the first time a show that’s part of YouTube’s original channel program to be picked up by a television network.

Everyday Health gets over 30 million visitors per month. This includes their website, as well as their YouTube channel. The company hopes that its television presence will bring even more visitors to its YouTube channel, and it also hopes that its current visitors to their YouTube channel will tune into ABC come October to watch the new show.

A few details are still unknown. The show plans to air on Saturday mornings, but we don’t know what time exactly, nor do we know what exact ABC channels the show will broadcast on. Either way, if you’ve been a big fan of Everyday Health or if you’re simply looking forward to a new food-related TV show, you may want to give Recipe Rehab a try.

What Did You Do with Your Old iPhone? [Chatroom]

Now that you’ve spent a lustful weekend filled with heavy breathing, groping, and maybe even licking the iPhone 5, you can’t go back to your old iPhone anymore. So what do you guys usually do with it? Sell it to some poor sap on Craigslist? Use it as an iPod? Hand it down to relatives? Store it as a collectable? More »

Google Maps Goes Diving, Provides “Seaview” Of Great Barrier Reef, Hawaii and Philippines

seaview1

Thanks to a partnership with The Catlin Seaview Survey, Google Maps now displays StreetView-ish images of the Great Barrier Reef and popular underwater spots around Hawaii and the Philippines. Clear your calendar. Forward your emails. It’s time for an undersea adventure.

As Google explained in a blog post today you can now use Google Maps to swim with a turtle, follow a manta ray or lose yourself watching the sun set over a reef. You can go diving in Maui’s Molokini crater or join snorkelers in Oahu’s Hanauma Bay. And of course all this is possible without swim lessons or sunscreen, thanks to the magic of Google Maps.

The video below shows how the amazing imagery was captured. Using a special one-off camera called the SVII, divers for The Catlin Seaview Survey swam at 4 kilometers an hour to capture the stunning footage.

Right now the imagery is very limited. Outside of the links above, it’s rather difficult to find an area to go swimming. Seaview spots are marked with an orange circle that’s only revealed when the Street View icon is dragged onto the map. Even then, these spots only show up when the map is zoomed in nearly all the way. It seems Google announced this service a bit prematurely.

Google pulled the announcement post shortly after it went live but later reposted everything. Several of the outbound links — to maps.google.com/ocean and The Catlin Seaview Survey — did not resolve at the time of this article’s posting.

But the data is still in the maps right now. You can still leave your cubicle behind and explore ancient boulder coral at Apo Island within a Philippines marine reserve. Who needs a vacation when you have Google Maps?
