Apple Didn’t Have to Make Apple Maps Yet—It Still Had a Year Left on Its Google Maps Contract [Apple]

Why did Apple kill Google Maps from iOS and make its own maps? The logical thinking was some combination of getting Google off iOS and Apple and Google’s Google Maps contract agreement being over. That’s only half true. Apple still could’ve used Google maps for another year under their current agreement, Apple just decided to blindside Google by going in its own direction. More »

Ken Goldman becomes new Yahoo CFO

Looking at the business side of things for a moment, Ken Goldman has been named Yahoo‘s new Chief Financial Officer. He joins the Yahoo from threat management company Fortinet, where he held the same title. Goldman won’t start his new gig at Yahoo until October 22, but when he walks through Yahoo’s doors that day, he’ll be in charge of overseeing the company’s “financial planning and analysis, controllership, tax, treasury, and investor relations.”

In a statement today, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer had some kind words about Goldman and the experience he’ll be bringing to the table. “Ken is one of the most accomplished and respected financial executives in the technology industry having served as a CFO for more than 25 years, and we’re thrilled to have him join Yahoo!,” Mayer said. “His track record leading the financial strategy and stewardship of many successful public and private companies makes him an ideal choice for Yahoo! as we enter our next phase of growth.”

Indeed, Goldman has served as CFO for a number of other companies aside from Fortinet, including Excite@Home, Sybase, and Cypress Semiconductor. Goldman will obviously be reporting directly to Mayer, and he’ll be replacing current CFO Tim Morse. Morse joined Yahoo in 2009, and will be leaving later this fall, paving the way for Goldman to take over.

Mayer, as many of you will remember, is quite new herself, leaving Google last year to become the CEO of Yahoo. Yahoo has been struggling for a while now, but the hope is that with these fresh faces come new ideas for turning the company’s fortunes around. We’ll be seeing what a Mayer-Goldman team up is capable of soon, so stay tuned.

Instagram updates with iPhone 5 and iOS 6 support

Ever since the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 released last week, many apps have been updated to support the two. Google Chrome and Sparrow (coming soon) are just a couple big apps that support the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 now. Added to that list is Instagram, the popular photography app that lets users take and share heavily-filtered images.

As with any updated app that takes advantage of the larger 4-inch screen of the iPhone 5, Instagram gives you more screen real estate when browsing through photos. Then again, capture mode looks to be a little weird on this version, since their square capture window doesn’t take advantage of the larger display and instead leaves a lot of blank space.

Live filter options also look to be missing from the updated version for the iPhone 5. Live filters allow you to test out different filters before you take a photo, which can come in handy a lot. This updated version seems to be missing them, but the iPhone 4S running iOS 6 still shows the live filter button. It’s unknown what the reason for that is at this point; it could be a bug or completely intentional.

There’s also a new registration and login page. While you expect to see a “log in with Facebook” option, that’s sadly still not a choice. You must still sign in using an Instagram account. However, you can use your Facebook information on your Instagram profile, which is an easy process now.

Instagram is a free download and the update is available now in the iTunes App Store.

Netflix iOS and Android apps have a remote control easter egg for PS3 owners

Netflix iOS and Android apps have a remote control easter egg for PS3 owners

Now that the revamped Netflix interface has hit phones and tablets for both Apple and Android powered hardware, the service has quietly enabled something else: second screen remote control. Currently the feature is only known to work on the PlayStation 3 with a mobile device on the same local network, once the two apps are running you can browse as normal on your phone or tablet and when you go to play a movie or TV show it asks you to choose where it will play. While the video is playing you can stop, pause or seek through it to a certain point, change the audio or subtitles, choose a different episode or even browse for something entirely different without stopping the action. The YouTube app on PS3 works in a similar fashion after its most recent update. We’ve got a few screens of the mobile apps at work in the gallery, check after the break for a quick video of it working.

Intel CEO claims Windows 8 is being released with bugs

If you’ve been waiting anxiously for the release of Windows 8 come late October, it might not be as great as you dreamed it would be. Intel CEO Paul Otellini told fellow employees that Windows 8 is being released before it’s ready for the masses. Otellini said that improvements still need to be made before Microsoft officially releases it to consumers.

Intel has been working closely with Microsoft on its development of Windows 8, so Otellini has a little bit of authority when it comes to the subject, but while he said that the new OS is being released before it’s ready, he clarified that it’s a good move for Microsoft to make improvements to Windows 8 after it ships.

We’re not really sure what improvements this entails, nor do we know how these updates will make its way to the OS exactly or even when they’ll arrive. However, they’ll most likely deliver any bug fixes through their Windows Update service, and may even release update packs similar to Service Packs that we saw in Windows XP and Windows 7.

We can’t say we’re surprised at Otellini’s comments. It’s usually common for company’s to release software that technically still has bugs in it, whether they’re known or unknown. However, if you’ve played around with the latest Windows 8 Preview, then you’ll know that Microsoft will most likely be okay to launch Windows 8 in October without any major problems.

Google Voice update lands on iOS

We’ve been writing a lot about new updates for iOS apps lately, but for the first time in recent memory, we finally have more to talk about than the fact that an app has been updated to support iOS 6 and iPhone 5. Google has unleashed a new update for Google Voice on iOS, and though the changelog is still painfully short, it does come with a pair of exciting new features in tow.

For instance, users can now begin a text directly from their inbox, saving a step or two when it comes to firing off a new message. Users also have the ability to designate a fall back number to use if Google Voice ever fails. We use Google Voice a lot around here at SlashGear Towers, and though we love the app, we can tell you that it doesn’t always work as intended. Therefore, it’s definitely a good thing that Google has implemented this new feature.

Aside from those two new additions, Google has also included a big fix for those dialing on an iPad or iPod Touch. A number of “minor text-related” bugs have also been quashed in this latest release. That’s it as far as additions and fixes go, so as you can see, it’s a pretty light update. Don’t get too excited though, iPhone 5 users, as it seems that this latest version of Google Voice doesn’t take full advantage of the new handset’s larger screen.

Yesterday, Google delivered an update for the iOS version of Chrome, bringing it up to date with support for iOS 6 and iPhone 5. Google has also been busy launching updates for its apps on Android, so it seems that the big G has been going big on the updates lately. Since Google’s apps are loved by many, we doubt we’ll be hearing many complaints about that. The latest version of Google Voice for iOS is now live on the app store [download link], so go and check it out.

Book-Shelf or Reading Chair? The Choice Is Yours. [Beautiful]

Everyone loves the aesthetic of an unorganized pile of books. The Once Upon a Time bookshelf, by Fabio Vinella, is just that, but certainly much better looking. Once Upon a Time, a beautifully built walnut bookshelf, features a useful platform that can be home to a reading lamp, or made into a seat if you enjoy lounging amongst your sacred tomes. The only drawback (besides costing $4200), is that certain slots only fit certain sized books, so plan accordingly. [Fabio Vinella via Design Milk] More »

Amigurumi TIE Fighter and AT-AT Crush the Rebel Alliance with Cuteness

It’s my theory that part of the reason the Empire had so much trouble taking down the Rebel Alliance and Jedi was that they just weren’t nice enough. You know what they say “kill ‘em with kindness” and all. Well if I were flying along in an X-Wing or a Snowspeeder, I’d be much more likely to be pulled in close to have a look at them if they looked as cute and cuddly as these.

These amigurumi crocheted TIE fighter and AT-AT are about as darling as Star Wars stuff can get, and sure to charm the pants off of Rogue Leader and Red Five all at once. And yes, I know they’re the same person, but that just sounded good.

These designs were created by Etsy artist Ana of MysteriousCats, who offers them up as patterns for you to crochet yourself, or if you’re lucky, you might find an already assembled one in her shop. The patterns will run you about $8 (USD), while a complete AT-AT sells for about $33. Ana’s also got designs in her shop for an X-Wing fighter, the Millenium Falcon, if you’re more into the Light Side, and a Naboo Starfighter if you can’t make up your mind which side you’re on. She’s also got one of these…

Adobe Edge swells to include Tools & Services, streamlines the designer web

Adobe Edge swells to include Tools & Services, streamlines the designer web

Adobe really wants web designers to kick things up a notch. Not satisfied with where Edge has gone so far, it just released a full-fledged Edge Tools & Services suite to cover the bases for polished desktop and mobile pages on most any modern platform. Motion tool Edge Animate (formerly Edge Preview), automated previewing tool Edge Inspect (formerly Shadow) and mobile app packager PhoneGap Build have all arrived in the suite as version 1.0 releases, and come with both Edge Web Fonts as well as TypeKit to spruce up text. A pair of pre-release utilities, Edge Code (Brackets) and Edge Reflow, are also joining the group to tackle the nitty-gritty of editing web code and layouts. Any of the apps will readily cooperate with third-party software, although they won’t always be cheap: while most of the Edge suite is free to use in at least a basic form as long as you have a Creative Cloud membership at any level, Edge Animate is only free during its initial run and should eventually cost either $15 per month or $499 in a one-time sale. For pros that want to burnish their corner of the web to a shine, the result just might be worth the expense.

Kindle Fire HD faces stiff competition from Nexus 7 according to reports

Amazon‘s new Kindle Fire HD tablet has only been available commercially for the better part of a week, and new reports are already coming out showing just how stiff their competition will be against Google’s Nexus 7. The popular ad tracking and analysis firm Chitika just released some new data showing the Fire’s already taking 11% of all Kindle Fire web share, but that the Nexus 7 is much higher.

They state that ad impressions for the new Kindle Fire HD is already taking over 11% of all Kindle devices, meaning the adoption rate and sales are obviously doing quite well compared to the other Kindles. Considering the original has been available for more than a year shows the HD has some serious room to grow, and dominate.

However, according to TheNextWeb Chitika then compares the Kindle Fire HD (or the original for that matter) to ASUS and Google’s popular Nexus 7 and the hill is looking pretty steep. With Chitika calculating the Android Jelly Bean powered tablet accounts for a 68.5% of the web share when compared to the Kindle Fire and the new Kindle Fire HD. That’s a different story indeed!

Obviously there’s a few things to consider here though. For one the Nexus 7 has been available for the better part of the summer and a few months now, while the Fire HD just launched a few weeks ago. Another thing could be the simple fact that more Kindle users are reading books and watching Amazon Prime content, while Nexus 7 users are browsing the web — so that could slightly skew the numbers. Either way both tablets appear to be doing quite well but only time will tell how the HD does overall. Be sure to take a peek at our Kindle Fire HD review, as well as our Nexus 7 review.
