Pumice ‘Raft’ Floating Off New Zealand Coast Created By Undersea Volcano Eruption, Researchers Say

Back in August, an enormous floating mass of pumice was spotted in the South Pacific Ocean off the coast of New Zealand. New evidence of changes on the seafloor confirms an erupting undersea volcano created the sprawling rock raft.

New Zealand scientists aboard the research vessel Tangaroa recently mapped the underwater volcano, Havre Seamount, which erupted on July 19 and was thought to have sent pumice rocks floating over a stretch of ocean 8,500 square miles (22,000 square kilometers). Now, the scientists say they detected a new volcanic cone — a feature built during an eruption — at Havre Seamount, reaching within 3,600 feet (1,100 meters) of the surface.

(Pumice forms when volcanic lava cools quickly. Gas gets trapped inside as the lava hardens, resulting in porous lightweight rocks that can float.)

Fluffy white stuff

On Aug. 9, the HMNZS Canterbury ship observed the floating pumice "island" — measuring 300 miles (482 kilometers) in length and more than 30 miles (48 km) wide. The floating fluff apparently "lit up a brilliant white color" under a spotlight, "like the edge of an ice shelf," said Lieutenant Tim Oscar, a Royal Australian Navy officer, in a statement at the time. [See Photos of the Pumice Raft & Volcano]

nasa pumice raftTaken in the afternoon on July 19, 2012, this NASA MODIS image reveals the Havre Seamount eruption, including the gray pumice, ash-stained water and the volcanic plume.

The researchers from New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) aboard Tangaroa are currently on the last leg of their 23-day voyage to study the Kermadecs, a volcanic island arc north of New Zealand. Their findings, along with an analysis of satellite images, make a pretty sealed-tight case for the pumice culprit.

They had previously mapped this undersea volcano in 2002 using a so-called multibeam echosounder, so they could compare those images with the recent ones taken this month. (The angle and travel time of the initial sound waves sent out allows scientists to create an image of the seafloor.)

They found these new volcanic cones, or miniature versions of the larger volcano, one towering at 787 feet (240 meters), on the rim of the caldera, NIWA marine geologist Joshu Mountjoy told LiveScience.

"The new map shows that the internal wall of the caldera now has up to 180 meters [590 feet] of lateral ‘bulging’ indicating the location of future eruption, or wall collapse," Mountjoy added.

Their analysis also suggests two magma types were involved, an explosive type called rhyolite that shot pumice up to the ocean surface, and a less volatile one that settled out to build the new volcanic cones.

"The rhyolite had high volatiles, much as a can of soda is full of carbon dioxide, so when it was shaken up and the pressure released on eruption (like opening the tab on the soda can) the magma came out violently and explosively, leading to ash and pumice that went from about a mile below sea level into the atmosphere," NIWA volcanologist Richard Wysoczanski wrote in an email to LiveScience.

The geochemistry of fresh samples of pumice taken from around the Havre Volcano matched up with that of samples taken from the surface raft, Wysoczanski found.

An undersea shakeup

Here’s how Wysoczanski thinks events leading to the vast raft went down: Sizeable earthquakes in the region on July 17 may have shaken up chambers of magma and caused movement of the basaltic magma well beneath the volcano. As it moved toward the surface, that magma would have intersected the rhyolitic, pumice-forming magma.

"Contact between the two magmas would have triggered the eruption leading to an explosive ash and pumice eruption from the caldera floor as well as basaltic magmas being erupted on the caldera rim at the top of the volcano, forming the volcanic cones," Wysoczanski wrote.

The Havre eruption tapered off by July 21, just days after it began, leaving behind the sprawling raft of pumice. Winds and currents have since spread the porous rocks into "a series of twisted filaments," according to the NASA statement. On Aug. 13, the pumice was spread over an area about 280 by 160 miles (450 by 258 kilometers).

And currently, according to NIWA scientists, the pumice is still floating in thin filaments and it will likely take some time for the rocks to totally disperse.

Microsoft’s Sinofsky says Windows 8 PCs can undercut Apple’s ‘recreational’ iPad mini

Microsoft's Sinofsky says Windows 8 PCs can undercut Apple's 'recreational' iPad mini, can't quite explain Surface

It just wouldn’t be a major Apple launch if there wasn’t a Microsoft executive calling out his old rival, would it? In a chat with AllThingsD, Windows division lead Steven Sinofsky has expressed doubts that Apple’s iPad mini is really a cost-effective pick against the just-launched Windows 8. It’s a $329 “recreational tablet” when there are work-ready Windows 8 laptops that cost $279, he says. He added that there are at least a few touchscreen Ultrabooks that could undercut the non-touch MacBook Air on price, and he ascribed the difference as much to “engineering” as the cost-cutting measures you’d expect.

Sinofsky was naturally just as keen to champion the advantages for work that Windows RT tablets like the Surface have when competing more directly with iPads, alluding to that Office bundle which hopefully keeps us more productive than a copy of Documents To Go. The company President would certainly disagree with Apple chief Tim Cook’s view that Surface is a confused product, calling it a “PC for everyone” that just doesn’t have to be used all the time. He makes valid points on the sheer value for money that you can get from both Windows PCs and tablets, although it would only be fair to mention that he didn’t touch on the currently low Windows RT app selection, or if the OS was exactly what the market wanted — we’d do well to remember that Microsoft alumni have a spotty track record when it comes to predicting Apple’s destiny.

Lawrence Wilkerson, Former Colin Powell Aide, Blasts Sununu, GOP, As ‘Full Of Racists’

Colin Powell’s former chief of staff condemned the Republican Party on Friday night, telling MSNBC’s Ed Schultz, “My party is full of racists.”

Retired Army Col. Lawrence Wilkerson made the comment in response to Mitt Romney campaign surrogate John Sununu’s suggestion on Thursday that Powell’s endorsement of President Barack Obama’s re-election was motivated by race. Wilkerson, who served as Powell’s chief of staff when the general was secretary of state during the first George W. Bush term, told Schultz that he respected Sununu “as a Republican, as a member of my party,” but did not “have any respect for the integrity of the position that [Sununu] seemed to codify.”

When asked by Schultz what, if anything, the remark said about the attitudes of the Republican Party, Wilkerson said:

Yahoo! refuses to recognize Internet Explorer 10′s Do Not Track

Back in 2009, Microsoft announced support for Do Not Track in Internet Explorer 9. Soon after, DNT support was added by Mozilla, Apple, and Opera to each company’s respective browser. With Internet Explorer 10, Microsoft has DNT enabled by default. Yahoo! doesn’t like this move, and released a statement that it will ignore the browser’s DNT signal.

Do Not Track is a technology aimed at addressing privacy concerns that lets Internet users opt out of being tracked by websites. Do Not Track is like the Internet version of the Do Not Call registry, according to donottrack.us. DNT works via a simple HTTP header, and is the by-product of a collaboration by several advocacy groups, tech companies, and researchers.

In the announcement, Yahoo! stated that it supports DNT “in principle,” and that it is working with partners to create an opt-out standard for users. It followed this by stating that Microsoft’s unilateral decision to enable DNT by default in Internet Explorer 10 makes it “hard to deliver on our value proposition” to users. As a result, the company says that it will still offer Ad Interest Manager and related tools, but will not recognize the Microsoft browser’s DNT signal on its properties.

Yahoo! is working with W3C in the pursuit of a Do Not Track standard that, it says, is in line with user expectations and an optimal Internet experience. “Ultimately, we believe that DNT must map to user intent — not to the intent of one browser creator, plug-in writer, or third-party software service.” W3C recommends that DNT be an opt-in preference.

Detroit Tigers Hope Return To Comerica Park Will Turn Around World Series

DETROIT — Toting his tiny aluminum bat, 5-year-old Gage Brookens wandered toward the cage and watched Austin Jackson, Omar Infante and a few other Tigers take batting practice on a chilly afternoon at Comerica Park.

Maybe that’s what these slumping Detroit hitters need in this World Series. Metal bats, rather than their weak wood.
